Listen To Brendon Urie's song from Broadway's SpongeBob SquarePants musical

There’s a new kind of Panic! in Bikini Bottom!

Joan Marcus

SpongeBob SquarePants bears his soul with unprecedented porousness in one of the first songs from the upcoming Broadway musical based on the gap-toothed Nickelodeon megastar. The stage adaptation SpongeBob SquarePants — The New Musical, which premiered to huge acclaim in Chicago last summer, is swimming toward a big opening this December at the Palace Theatre.

EW has unveiled the first listen to “(Just A) Simple Sponge,” a power ballad for SpongeBob (played by newcomer Ethan Slater) written by Panic! at the Disco frontman Brendon Urie, who himself made a big Broadway debut earlier this year with a turn in Kinky Boots. In no time at all, he’ll be back on the boards represented by his part in the score for the musical. Click here to listen to “(Just A) Simple Sponge” on EW.com!

To celebrate Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie, Craig Bartlett, the creator of Nickelodeon's iconic '90s animated series Hey Arnold!, has shared a brand-new frame from Nickelodeon's upcoming brand-new two-part Hey Arnold! television movie in a post on his official Instagram profile page, @CraigBartlett! Some things never change. #thejunglemovie".

Hey Arnold! The Jungle Movie takes the kids on the field trip of a lifetime: action packed and full of adventure! They’ll join Arnold on a quest in which he’ll try to achieve his ultimate dream and finally find his missing parents. It all starts when Arnold and his classmates take a trip to San Lorenzo, South America, which, coincidentally, is the last place Arnold’s parents were seen! Their trip takes a turn when pirates kidnap Arnold and his friends! From there it’s one jungle hazard after another, and the gang must put their heads together to get out of danger. As the leader of the journey, Arnold must make sure he and his friends survive safely, all while working towards a reunion he’s dreamt of his whole life!

Click the picture to open it fully. It's just so beautiful! Via Nickelodeon.

The two-hour TV movie features a storyline that picks up from where the original series ended in the "The Journal" in 2004 and resolves unanswered questions and plotlines-including Arnold finally getting answers about the whereabouts of his missing parents, Arnold's last name, and how Arnold feels about Helga! The movie is co-written and executive produced by the series’ original creator Craig Bartlett and produced by Nickelodeon in Burbank, Calif.

Hey Arnold! The Jungle Movie is slated to premiere on Nickelodeon USA on Thursday 23rd November 2017, as part of the networks Thanksgiving celebrations.

A photo accompanying this announcement is available at http://www.globenewswire.com/NewsRoom/AttachmentNg/091ec668-45e8-45d0-bae0-a3a5c9b7971e

Currently in development on season one and two (52 x 11’ episodes), Rainbow Rangers is slated to premiere in 2018 on the No. 1 rated kids’ network Nickelodeon’s Nick Jr., along with a comprehensive retail program spearheaded by Mattel’s Fisher-Price Toys as master toy partner. Previously announced licensing partners H.E.R. Accessories (accessories), Bentex (apparel) and Franco Manufacturing (bedding and home décor).

“The industry’s response to Rainbow Rangers continues to bolster are expectations for this colorful, engaging and empowering series for young viewers,” said Genius Brand’s SVP of Worldwide Consumer Products Lloyd Mintz. “Each new partner and every branded product line we introduce in support of Rainbow Rangers fuels greater interest and ultimately, will bolster what is already anticipated to be a tremendously successful new preschool brand.”

“We’re very eager and excited to align our specialty bags, backpacks and luggage with the positive and empowering message delivered in each episode of Rainbow Rangers,” said Carol Pedelty of Global Design Concepts.

“Like Genius Brands and its positive messaging for children via Rainbow Rangers, we at Handcraft put the emphasis on positive consumer experiences and reinforcing community support. Johnny Quasar: Boy Genius | Original Jimmy Neutron Concept Shorts

# This is the theme song, for Johnny Quasar! #

Before everybody's favorite Boy Genius James Isaac Neutron was 'Jimmy Neutron', he was called 'Johnny Quasar'! Check out two demos featuring early concept designs for 'Johnny Quasar' from 1995 and 1997, respectively, in which Johnny Quasar introduces himself and his dog Goddard, uploaded by voice actor Hilal H., the original voice of Johnny Quasar/Jimmy Neutron, onto their official YouTube channel, below!:

John A. Davis, the creator of Jimmy Neutron, came up with the idea for Johnny Quasar sometime during the 1980s and wrote a script titled "Runaway Rocketboy" (later the name of the second pilot and the plot for the movie) which was later abandoned. While moving to a new house in the early 1990s he stumbled upon the script and re-worked it as a short film titled The Adventures of Johnny Quasar and presented it in SIGGRAPH where he met Steve Oedekerk and worked on a television series as well as the movie.

In the pilot episode, "Runaway Rocketboy!", Jimmy rides around on his self-made rocket and crashes onto the roof of his house. Naturally, his parents aren’t pleased, comically ignoring the fact that their 8-year-old son built a rocket that actually worked.

Consequently, the unaired pilot consisted of a kid genius “who gets grounded for testing his rocket engines without permission,” Davis told MTV News. Upset, he flies away in his rocket and encounters the Yolkians — the alien race we later meet in the movie — and realizes he loves being on Earth with his family, returning home right before his parents discover he was ever missing.

Johnny Quasar was a name pulled straight from Davis’s childhood. During high school and college, Davis worked for his dad’s company and was given good-natured hell as the boss’s kid. “I was always into geeky nerdy stuff, and so they started calling [me] Johnny Quasar, 'cause my name is John and my dad called me Johnny, and they’d go, ‘Johnny Quasar, space cadet!’” Davis recalled. Davis liked the name and eventually transferred it to his cartoon creation.

The name didn’t stick, however, because Davis ran into legal issues, thanks to two other characters with similar names: Captain Quasar and Jonny Quest. So he was asked to tweak the name — and only had 24 hours to come up with a new moniker for his future franchise. (No pressure or anything.) Davis and his wife, Kim, took their Dog (who was not named Goddard) for a walk and started toying with different names. “Proton” was tossed around, but eventually the duo came up with “Jimmy Neutron.”

As well as a major name change, Johnny Quasar/Jimmy Neutron went through a few of visual changes throughout the years, most notably, his forehead being much bigger and emphasized than in the hit Nickelodeon Movie and animated television series.

Like Jimmy, his best friend Sheen also underwent a major change during development. Davis originally envisioned Ultra Lord’s biggest fanboy as a Japanese character. In fact, he’s named after a Japanese man who worked for Davis. They had a hard time finding a Japanese actor who fit all the criteria, however, so they opened up the role and ended up with Jeff Garcia, who went on to voice Sheen, now Aztecan, all throughout the series, as well as on the spin-off series Planet Sheen.

A screenshot of Johnny Quasar's original family can be found in the Nicktoons book, "Not Just Cartoons We're Nicktoons". A maquette of Johnny Quasar was also on display at Nickelodeon Animation's "Happy Happy Joy Joy" art exhibit to celebrate 25 years of Nicktoons.

SNICK (short for Saturday Night Nickelodeon) was a two-hour programming block on Nickelodeon USA, geared toward older (preteen to teen) audiences. The block launched on August 15, 1992 and ran until August 28, 2004. It was aired on Saturdays starting at 8 p.m and ending at 10 p.m. ET. In 2004, SNICK was revamped as the Saturday night edition of TEENick.

The block debuted on Saturday, August 15, 1992, with a pair of Sunday favorites - the teen sitcom Clarissa Explains It All and the Nicktoon The Ren & Stimpy Show - and the network premieres of Roundhouse (a musical comedy variety series) and Are You Afraid of the Dark? (a horror fantasy drama anthology series).

In 1999, Snick was revamped as Snick House. With this came a number of changes. The block was hosted by Nick Cannon, and each week, a celebrity or music group made an appearance. The format was very similar to the former TEENick block, but was more of a party. Each week, kids could go online and vote for their favorite Snick House Video Picks. The winning music video was then played during Snick. Starting in September 2002, SNICK also featured a series of On-Air Dare segments featuring members of the All That cast.

Programming featured as part of the SNICK line-up included: The Adventures of Pete & Pete, All That, The Secret World of Alex Mack, Space Cases, Kenan & Kel, The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo, KaBlam!, The Journey of Allen Strange, Rugrats, CatDog, The Angry Beavers, Animorphs, The Amanda Show, 100 Deeds for Eddie McDowd, Double Dare 2000, Noah Knows Best, Caitlin's Way, SpongeBob SquarePants, The Fairly OddParents, Invader Zim, The Nick Cannon Show, Cousin Skeeter, All Grown Up!, Romeo! and The Brothers García.

Nickelodeon UK launched a localised version of SNICK in 1999. Airing Saturday and Sunday nights from 7-10pm, SNICK UK featured programming such as The Muppet Show, Deepwater Black and Guys Like Us.

Inside SNICK: Saturday Night Nickelodeon

Submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society: the untold story of SNICK, 25 years later.

The couch was in the middle of the forest, ready for its close-up. A large, Pantone-orange sofa with thick black trim and comfy cushions, it came with a dedicated crew to transport it from place to place, like an actual celebrity. But then, it technically was a celebrity.

How a piece of furniture went from eccentric creation to coveted pop-culture icon had as much to do with its sun-bright hue as what it was made for in the first place: a groundbreaking Saturday programming block on Nickelodeon, the First Kids’ Network.

The purpose of Saturday Night Nick, better known as SNICK, was to serve a young audience that had been consistently deprived of quality nighttime weekend entertainment. With it, the network could secure the late-Saturday attention of pre-teens—a slightly older demographic than its daytime viewers, though not quite old enough to be out and about with their friends. When the block first premiered in 1992, 25 years ago this August, it quickly became appointment viewing for its target audience.

“That’s what you wanted to see on a Saturday night,” says Kel Mitchell, best known for his work on second-generation SNICK programs All That and Kenan & Kel—though he was also a regular SNICK viewer before being hired at the network, told Vanity Fair. “If you were a kid around that time, that’s definitely where your face would be glued.”

Before SNICK, prime-time Nickelodeon was the home of Nick at Nite, which featured reruns of classic shows like Bewitched and I Love Lucy. But the network had begun inching closer to all original programming. With the success of Nicktoons—an animated Sunday morning lineup including Doug, The Ren & Stimpy Show and Rugrats—head of programming and development Herb Scannell looked to keep up the momentum.

“We saw it both as an opportunity to program a night that was a big thing in kids’ lives and to also steal some ratings,” says Scannell. Former Nickelodeon Senior Vice President (SVP) Geoffrey Darby recalls sitting with Scannell, “taking him through my thoughts of what we should do with this block—and then light bulbs went off in his head.”

The 8 P.M. anchor was Clarissa Explains It All, starring Melissa Joan Hart as a computer-savvy teenager trying to navigate school, parents, crushes, and her annoying little brother, Ferguson. “Clarissa was the monster hit,” explains Rich Ross, a former Nick executive and the current group president of Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, and Science Channel. “Melissa had become a relatively big star.”

At 8:30 P.M., Nick opted for a new program called Roundhouse, made specifically with SNICK in mind. Developed by former In Living Color writer Buddy Sheffield and his then-wife Rita, it was an unconventional variety show centered on an oddball family with a crotchety dad who roamed around the set in a motorized recliner while a diverse cast of friends and strangers dropped in. It had the thrill of a live stage production, complete with bizarre non sequiturs and a dizzying array of pop-culture references.

Clarissa Explains It All ran at 8 P.M., Roundhouse at 8:30, The Ren and Stimpy Show at 9, and Are You Afraid of the Dark? at 9:30.

At 9 P.M. came The Ren & Stimpy Show, a animated series from creator John Kricfalusi that reveled in gross-out, snot- and pus-related humor. At 9:30, anthology horror series Are You Afraid of the Dark? began. Like Roundhouse, it was made specifically for SNICK; the show focused on a group of kids known as the Midnight Society, who gathered each week to sit around a campfire telling scary stories.

“It was like a kid Twilight Zone,” recalls Mitchell. “I remember one episode where a girl turns into a doll. . . . It was just a wild show.”

Each show stood on its own, but together, they were a motley package. “You’re going from variety to sitcom to cartoon to scary stories,” says Darby. “There’s no flow there, which was done on purpose. We didn’t want to go sitcom-to-sitcom, and then cartoon-to-cartoon. We actually wanted to mix it up.”

To make the block feel more cohesive, the network turned to its creative director, Scott Webb. “We got the assignment that we needed to make Saturday night special,” says Webb. “We did Nick at Nite, but creating a nighttime destination for kids was new and different. It was a little more sophisticated.”

Using an old photography book called Red Couch Portrait America as inspiration, Webb and the promotions team came up with the idea of crafting a giant orange sofa—to match Nickelodeon’s famous logo—and making it the block’s official mascot. The promo team then began shepherding the couch from location to location (a beach, a farm, a gas station, a forest) for commercial shoots. The ads were meant to hammer home the idea that SNICK was mobile, communal, a movement anyone could join.

Art director Steve Thomas, who designed the official black-and-purple SNICK logo, recalls many of those early oddball ads—and how frequently the couch had to get reupholstered: “It [got] funky,” he says. Adds Barbara Kanowitz, the director who shot the spots, “The orange couch was sort of the metaphor for what they were doing with SNICK. We would bring the orange couch to different locations . . . [and] use the couch as its own identity.”

The couch would also be featured during in-network bumpers between shows, where talent or guest celebrities like the Spice Girls would come host SNICK from its cushions. It became the perfect glue for a diverse lineup—and the sofa quickly took on a life of its own. Everyone wanted to sit on it, take a picture with it, own it. “When we were doing GUTS, we weren’t in prime-time but we wanted the couch [on set],” says GUTS co-creator and former Nickelodeon president Albie Hecht. “There were many, many fights over the couch.”

What happened to the original sofa? “Oh my god,” says a laughing Darby. “I don’t think anyone has it.” Jokes Hecht, “I will tell you where the couch is. Remember the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark?”—a reference to the giant government storage facility that houses the Ark of the Covenant.

In reality, there were multiple orange couches. One had black piping and was used for promos; another was trucked around for events with fans. As of 2017, one of the originals is still at Nickelodeon headquarters. A second is owned by former N.B.A. star Shaquille O’Neal. According to O’Neal’s manager: “he liked it, asked for it, and they gave it to him.”

Like the rest of Nickelodeon’s golden age, SNICK was different from everything children’s TV had stood for in the past. In its early days, the network bucked trends and ignored experts, capturing an impressionable generation’s attention during the rise of cable. “Before Nickelodeon, there were two kinds of kids TV: there were puppet-derivative pre-school shows, and Saturday-morning cartoons. And we saw the opportunity to give kids what adults had,” Scannell explains.

“Whenever you’re an early teen or tween, there is not a lot to do on Saturday nights. Nickelodeon found a way to plug in to that particular demographic and give us stories with real people that we could connect to,” says Adam Sweeney, co-director of an upcoming Nickelodeon documentary called The Orange Years. “A lot of those characters in a way felt like our best friends.” SNICK even helped Sweeney keep in touch with his real-life elementary school best friend, Scott Barber, after Sweeney’s family moved; he and Barber used to tune in to SNICK together, speaking on the phone as it aired. Decades later, Barber is co-directing The Orange Years with him.

“There was also a kind of shared consciousness with kids all across the nation,” Barber adds. “You kept hearing parents all the time [say], ‘Get outside and play! Get off the couch!’ Nickelodeon was actively telling you it was cool to hang out [on the couch] and be part of the Nick family”—a place where kids could own their own orange furniture, bond over Midnight Society stories, and follow the advice of Clarissa’s spunky, stylish lead.

Clockwise from top left: Melissa Joan Hart in Los Angeles, recreating a therapist and patient scene in Rockaway Beach, Long Island, and the orange couch in the woods in Westchester, NY.

After several lineup changes as series cycled in and out of production, SNICK would eventually end in 2004—though it did return nine years later for a “SNICK-iversary” on a Nickelodeon satellite channel, TeenNick. (TeenNick is now set to commemorate the block’s 25th anniversary by showing old SNICK programming throughout August, including a re-airing of SNICK’s first night, on August 15.) The resurfaced excitement around SNICK and its mascot, even more than two decades after it aired, proved the continuing power of the team’s creation. In the early days, says Scanell, “we would hear stories about kids’ SNICK parties, sending us pictures or drawings of the big orange couch.” It was just like the block’s famous intro: “everybody would crowd onto the couch like they’d crowd into a car, the TV would come on, and it would be time for SNICK.”

Twenty-five years later, Saturday Night Nick and its shows live on through those once-young viewers, who’ve held onto their orange-tinted, weekend memories well into adulthood, passing them onto future generations.

“It’s awesome to have people come up to you and go, ‘Man [if] I had a bad week when I was a kid, I would go home and watch Kenan and Kel and I would be so happy. I would look forward to the weekend to see you,’ ” Mitchell says . “Saturday Nickelodeon: there will never be another one.”
