El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera was one of the major standout animated series releases with Nickelodeon back in the 2000s, and the creator behind it all has revealed that we may be seeing Manny and his family once again!
About El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera:
Co-created by husband-and-wife team Jorge R. Gutierrez (
The Book of Life) and Sandra Equihua (
Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!) and based on Jorge's experiences growing up in Mexico City,
El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera, described as a folk art-inspired animated comedy with a spaghetti western twist follows 13-year-old Manny (voiced by Alanna Ubach,
Welcome to the Wayne) who must choose whether to use his superpowers as El Tigre for good or evil.
Manny is a well-meaning kid who lives with his father and grandfather in Miracle City, an urban melting pot full of colorful heroes and nefarious villains. A spin of his mystical belt buckle transforms him into the brave and powerful masked warrior, El Tigre. As El Tigre, he has to choose whether to become a great superhero, like his father, Rodolpho and his alter ego White Pantera (voiced by Eric Bauza,
Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,
The Loud House,
The Casagrandes) or a feared super-villain like his grandfather, Granpapi and his alter ego Puma Loco (voiced by Carlos Alazraqui,
Rocko's Modern Life). Manny struggles with the daily choice of which super-power he will master because being good is good... but being bad is fun.
El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera premiered on Nickelodeon on March 3, 2007 and ran for 26 episodes until September 13, 2008, winning two Emmy Awards along the way. The storylines draw from the popular Latino telenovelas with exaggerated comedic situations and outrageous recurring characters.
Renewed Interest in El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera:
Although it's been nearly 20 years since the show was on-air with new episodes,
El Tigre has never been far from fans hearts and minds. In 2023, Manny Rivera
became a playable character in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2, and just last year, the series received an official "The Art Of..." book detailing the gorgeous art featured in the show. Accompanied by interviews with Gutierrez, Equihua, and key animators and concept artists,
The Art of El Tigre is the definitive archive of the award-winning cult classic cartoon.
Will El Tigre Ever Come Back?
Speaking with Cartoon Base in 2024,
El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera creator Jorge R. Gutierrez said that not only was he interested in coming back for a revival but actually almost did a movie when he initially started working with Netflix before it fell through, "I would absolutely LOVE to do this. When I first came to Netflix we almost did a movie but the deal didn't work out at the time. I have a big idea for a feature and then a new series. Hopefully I get to do this one day."
Jump forward to July 2025, and it seems like an
El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera revival could be on its way! Speaking to
Cartoon Base, Gutierrez revealed that he's currently in talks with Nickelodeon to bring
El Tigre back, saying: “Something unexpected. And yes… something that could absolutely lead to a movie [...] El Tigre has a habit of showing up when you least expect him. And when he does… he’s gonna roar. THIS I SWEAR!”
El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera wrapped up its run several years ago, but it seems like the creator still has plenty of ideas of where to take Manny's adventures next. It was a series that had a lot of firsts, so a revival would be a welcome one for sure.
