On Saturday 13th July 2019, Nickelodeon France will celebrate the 20th anniversary of SpongeBob SquarePants with the debut of the brand-new two-part SpongeBob (Bob l'éponge) Birthday Special, “SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout”, premiering at 11:35.
It’s SpongeBob’s birthday in “SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout,” an original mixed live-action and animated special which features for the first time the celebrated voice talent behind SpongeBob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, Sandy, Squidward and Plankton playing live-action doppelgänger versions of the animated characters they voice! In the one-hour special, Bikini Bottom is getting ready for a very special day: SpongeBob's birthday! To mark the occasion, Sandy, helped by the inhabitants of the underwater city, decide to organise a surprise birthday party for SpongeBob. In order to keep the birthday boy away from the preparations, Patrick and SpongeBob go on a crazy trip to the surface world, where they come across a few familiar characters during lunchtime rush at The Trusty Slab restaurant. The special will also feature special guest stars David Hasselhoff (Baywatch, Bob l'éponge, le film), Kel Mitchell (All That, Kenan & Kel, Good Burger), Jack Griffo (Les Thunderman) and Daniella Perkins (L'école des chevaliers). Nickelodeon France will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of SpongeBob SquarePants all through summer, with special themed marathons showcasing the best moments of SpongeBob SquarePants, airing every Saturday from 8:45! Each marathon will be dedicated to popular characters from the show, including SpongeBob (Bob l'éponge), Patrick Star (Patrick Étoile), Squidward Tentacles (Carlo Tentacule), and Mr. Krabs (Monsieur Krabs).

Tout l'été, Nickelodeon sera à la fête puisque chaque samedi, la chaîne diffusera à 8 heures 45 un Best-of des aventures de Bob l’éponge. Point d’orgue de cette programmation spéciale : samedi 13 juillet, à 11 heures 35, un double épisode – présenté en juin dernier en avant-première au Festival d’Annecy – mêlera animation et beaucoup de prises de vue réelles. Il racontera l’anniversaire de Bob l’éponge qui, durant une journée, s’accorde une folle virée dans le monde des humains. Une fête à laquelle les fans pourront retrouver les meilleurs amis du héros : son escargot Gary, son acolyte Patrick l’étoile de mer ou encore Sandy Ecureuil.
Le succès de cette série s’explique surtout par l’humour burlesque de son créateur, Stephen Hillenburg, mais aussi de son scénariste Kaz Prapuolenis, amateur d’absurde et créateur méfiant vis-à-vis de la morale : « on s’appuie sur des situations très simples auxquelles on ajoute des idées de plus en plus farfelues », explique-t-il.
