Netflix and Nickelodeon Form Multi-Year Output Deal to Produce Original Animated Films and Series

Hollywood, Calif. - November 13, 2019 - Netflix and Nickelodeon today announced that they have formed a new, multi-year output deal to produce original animated feature films and television series - based both on the Nickelodeon library of characters as well as all-new IP - for kids and families around the world. This marks an expansion of the existing relationship between the companies, which has already brought several popular titles to Netflix, including animated specials Rocko's Modern Life: Static Cling and Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus. Also forthcoming are specials based on The Loud House and Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

“Nickelodeon has generated scores of characters that kids love, and we look forward to telling wholly original stories that re-imagine and expand on the worlds they inhabit,” said Netflix vice president of original animation, Melissa Cobb. “We’re thrilled to continue collaborating with Brian Robbins, Ramsey Naito, and the creative team at Nickelodeon in new ways as we look to find fresh voices and bring bold stories to our global audience on Netflix.”

“Nickelodeon’s next step forward is to keep expanding beyond linear platforms, and our broader content partnership with Netflix is a key path toward that goal,” said Brian Robbins, President, Nickelodeon.

He added, “The Nickelodeon Animation Studio is home to the world-class artists and storytellers behind some of the most iconic characters and shows ever made, and our head of Animation, Ramsey Naito, has been building on that legacy over the past year by ramping up development and production exponentially. The ideas and work at our Studio are flowing, and we can’t wait to work with Melissa and the Netflix team on a premium slate of original animated content for kids and families around the world.”

Netflix Animation supports the global community of storytellers across all genres, tones, and techniques. The upcoming 2019 animated slate includes family animated feature film Klaus from Sergio Pablos (streaming November 15), kids animated series Dino Girl Gauko from Japan (streaming November 22), adult animated film I Lost My Body from Jérémy Clapin (streaming November 29), and Fast & Furious Spy Racers from DreamWorks (streaming December 26), among others.

Netflix is also in the midst of producing a live-action adaptation of Nickelodeon's beloved animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender.

The news follows Netflix recently adding library Nickelodeon programming to the service, including Victorious and Sam & Cat. In addition to library programming, Netflix also acquired the rights to Nickelodeon's Pinky Malinky, and launched it exclusively on the platform earlier this year.

‘SpongeBob’ Spinoff Highlights Netflix-Nickelodeon Deal

Nickelodeon will create and produce original animated content based on its library of characters for the streaming service.

LOS ANGELES — Nickelodeon will make a “SpongeBob SquarePants” spinoff for Netflix as part of a multiyear content-production deal that reflects the pressure on Netflix to fortify itself against new streaming competition, notably Disney Plus.

Netflix and Nickelodeon announced a deal on Wednesday for Nickelodeon to create and produce original animated feature films and television series based on Nickelodeon’s library of characters. Shows based on completely new characters are also part of the agreement. The companies gave no specifics on characters, the number of shows or how many years.

But the partnership involves a music-based project centered on Squidward, the malcontent anthropomorphic octopus on “SpongeBob SquarePants,” according to two people briefed on the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss still private details. The people said the overall deal was worth more than $200 million to Nickelodeon.

Disney Plus, Disney’s streaming service, became available on Tuesday. In a statement on Wednesday, Disney said 10 million people had signed up for the service, surpassing analyst expectations.

As the so-called streaming wars heat up, children’s programming has become one of the most competitive fronts. Netflix has ramped up production of cartoons, children’s sitcoms and animated movies, in part to compensate for Disney content that is leaving the service. Disney Plus will be the streaming home for everything Disney, Pixar, Marvel, “Star Wars” and National Geographic. HBO Max, the coming app from WarnerMedia, announced a deal with “Sesame Street” last month that will bring, for the first time, most of the show’s five-decade library to streaming: more than 4,500 episodes.

The deal announced on Wednesday reflects a strategic shift at Nickelodeon and its owner, Viacom, in general. Rather than build a streaming service of its own — and with its cable networks in decline because of cord cutting — Viacom has decided to become a kind of Hollywood arms dealer, producing content for whatever streaming service can pay the most. MTV, also owned by Viacom, has been making shows for online buyers, including a reboot of “The Real World” for Facebook.

“Nickelodeon’s next step forward is to keep expanding beyond linear platforms, and our broader content partnership with Netflix is a key path toward that goal,” Brian Robbins, Nickelodeon’s president, said in the news release.

The two companies have a long history. Nickelodeon licensed hits like “SpongeBob” and “Dora the Explorer” to Netflix starting in 2009, when streaming was in its infancy. Viacom walked away in 2013 — ratings for “SpongeBob” on Nickelodeon had plunged — but made a new deal with Netflix a couple of years ago to supply the service with original content based on Nickelodeon’s “Loud House” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” properties, among others.

Paramount Removes 'Rugrats' Movie from Upcoming Release Schedule

Paramount Pictures is putting its Rugrats movie in a timeout. The studio said today that it has pulled the Nickelodeon TV adaptation from its schedule after setting a January 29, 2021.


Taking over that weekend slot is Rumble, the toon from Paramount Animation and WWE Studios that is set in a world where monster wrestling is a global sport and monsters are superstar athletes. Will Arnett, Terry Crews, Geraldine Viswanathan and WWE stars Becky Lynch and Roman Reigns lead the voice cast for Rumble, which moves back six months from its planned July 31, 2020, date.

Rugrats was announced in July 2018 as a live-action pic with CGI characters as part of a franchise revival that also includes a new Nick TV series. The movie was originally announced with a November 13th, 2020. Paramount, which didn’t cite a reason for grounding the film, released three Rugrats features in the late 1990s and early 2000s: The Rugrats Movie (1998), Rugrats in Paris: The Movie (2000) and Rugrats Go Wild (2003). They combined to draw just a shade under $300 million worldwide. David Bowers, who directed three of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies, has been tapped to direct the new Rugrats project.

The studio today also titled its next plunge into the SpongeBob SquarePants aquaverse. Newly christened The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, the toon keeps its scheduled May 22 release date. Meanwhile, the Untitled Paramount Animation pic that had staked out a February 12, 2021, slot now is undated.

The Rugrats is being written by David Goodman and is set to be released by Paramount Players, the division of Paramount Pictures that develops and produces co-branded feature films with Viacom’s leading media networks.

Although currently unconfirmed, it could be that Nickelodeon are now planning to release the upcoming Rugrats movie on Netflix as part of Nickelodeon's newly extended multi-year pact with the streamer, which will see Nickelodeon produce original animated feature films and television series - based both on the Nickelodeon library of characters as well as all-new intellectual property.

Rugrats focuses on a group of toddlers, Tommy Pickles, Chuckie Finster, twins Phil and Lil DeVille, and Angelica Pickles, and their day-to-day lives that became adventures in their imaginations. The original Rugrats series launched in August of 1991 and instantly became a groundbreaking phenomenon, spawning consumer products, three hit theatrical releases and cementing its place in pop culture history through its iconic characters, storytelling and unique visual style. Rugrats was in production for nine seasons over the course of 13 years. The series earned four Daytime Emmy Awards, six Kids' Choice Awards and its own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Original creators Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó and Paul Germain will return to the TV series as executive producers. Nickelodeon’s Rugrats is being produced in Burbank, Calif.

Mumbai, Wednesday 13th November 2019 - Western Railway in association with Nickelodeon, India’s leading kids’ entertainment franchise along with theatre group – Theatrewaalas came together and staged a Nukkad Natak for their campaign – #Khulkebolo at Churchgate station o­n 13th November,2019 o­n the occasion of Children’s Day, which is celebrated across India o­n the 14th of November, every year. This play, which was led by Nicktoons Shiva and Rudra focussed o­n embracing the unfiltered innocence of a child.


According to a press release issued by Shri Ravinder Bhakar – Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, o­n the occasion of Children’s Day, an unique & innovative campaign – #Khulkebolo was organised by Western Railway in association with Nickelodeon, This campaign aims to embrace the fact how children are untouched by the layers of social awareness and self-consciousness that burden youths and parents. The activity saw Nicktoons Shiva and Rudra along with theatre artists of the group Theatrewaalas perform a 12-min act for the commuters at Churchgate state. A small part of the act also threw light o­n spreading awareness o­n the unsafe travelling practices adopted by passengers such as trespassing, crossing the railway lines, maintaining cleanliness,etc to name a few. Shri Bhakar further stated that Nickelodeon’s campaign #Khulkebolo focuses o­n inspiring not just kids, but adults also and appeals them to not let any societal burden affect the child within themselves. As we grow up, we often forget what it’s like to think and express like a child. This play helped all of us reminisce our times as a child and W. Rly is happy to have provided a platform for such a performance. Speaking o­n this occasion, Shri Rohit Tiwari, the founder of Theatrewaalas expressed his happiness o­n the association with W. Rly & Nickelodeon and stated that the play enacts the innocent observations of a child and how they often blurt out things that they are advised not to due to their incorruptibility. As we are the keepers of our child’s innocence, the play encourages parents and youths to celebrate the child within.

J Balvin, Louis De Guzman and Nickelodeon Launch SpongeBob SquarePants Collection at PacSun

Fresh from teaming-up with Modernica and Louis De Guzman for a homeware collection and Ian Delucca on a set of grillz, J Balvin has revealed the latest installment of his ongoing SpongeBob SquarePants collaboration! The Colombian reggaeton icon has once again collaborated with Louis De Guzman to launch a SpongeBob SquarePants apparel collection to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the beloved Nickelodeon animated series. The line is now available to purchase at PacSun.


The J Balvin x Louis De Guzman clothing collection encompasses two short-sleeved t-shirts (a SpongeBob Tie-Dyed T-Shirt and a Patrick T-Shirt) as well as long-sleeved tee, and a SpongeBob hoodie. The collection will also expand to include two SpongeBob candles.

The clothing part of the collection is available in a range of sizes. Items in the line have price points between $38-$88 (USD); £32-76 (GBP).

In additional news, Chicago’s own Louis De Guzman, locally-based visual artist and designer, is hosting a pop-up with Nickelodeon to showcase his newest body of work, designed in collaboration with Latin superstar, J Balvin, for SpongeBob SquarePants’ 20 year anniversary. De Guzman will take over a Wicker Park activation space for five days in November, filling it with the collection of eclectic art pieces, apparel, and home goods curated in gallery format, for the Chicago public to enjoy. November 12th through the 16th, fine art and cartoon lovers alike are invited to immerse themselves in De Guzman and Balvin’s contemporary take on Spongebob’s underwater world in celebration of the show’s impact on pop culture, at 1714 N Damen Ave, Chicago, IL. Nickelodeon to Produce Squidward Tentacles Based 'SpongeBob' Spin-Off for Netflix

Nickelodeon will be producing a brand-new music-based SpongeBob SquarePants spin-off centered on Squidward Tentacles, the malcontent anthropomorphic octopus as part of the network's freshly announced multi-year output deal with Netflix, The New York Times has learned.


Announced today, Nickelodeon's new pact with Netflix will see the network produce original animated feature films and television series - based both on the Nickelodeon library of characters as well as all-new intellectual properties - for kids and families around the world.

No further details of the planned Squidward project were revealed.

Squidward Tentacles is SpongeBob’s not-so-happy neighbor who would do anything to get away from him. Unfortunately for Squidward, he and SpongeBob are also coworkers at the Krusty Krab. This clarinet-playing job-hating cashier just wants some peace and quiet. Squidward is often a very cynical, selfish individual and displays an unjustified air of superiority. He lives a a Easter Island, located between SpongeBob's pineapple home and Patrick's rock, and is voiced by Rodger Bumpas.

The project will be the second announced SpongeBob SquarePants spin-off, following the announcement of Kamp Koral, a original spinoff series of the network's iconic hit which follow a 10-year-old SpongeBob SquarePants during his summer at sleepaway camp. The series is set to premiere during summer 2020.

The news comes as Nickelodeon is looking at ways to expand the SpongeBob universe for fresh new stories. "Literally my second or third day here, I was asked to go to a SpongeBob season 12 or 13 pickup meeting. I asked a lot of questions. What I realized is that we’ve made a lot of shows over many, many years, but the shows basically stayed the same. We had all these great characters in the world of SpongeBob, but we never individually explored their origin stories or their histories or put them in their own environments," Nickelodeon President Brian Robbins recently told TV KIDS.

SpongeBob SquarePants, which was recently greenlit for a 13th season, has reigned as the number-one kids’ animated series on TV for the last 17 years, while generating a universe of beloved characters, pop culture catchphrases and memes, theatrical releases, consumer products, a Tony award-winning Broadway musical which is now touring North America and a global fan base. SpongeBob SquarePants is seen in more than 208 countries and territories, translated in 55+ languages, and averages more than 100 million total viewers every quarter. SpongeBob SquarePants is created by Stephen Hillenburg and produced by Nickelodeon in Burbank, Calif.

Nickelodeon's is currently in the midst of the network's "Best Year Ever", a year-long global celebration of one of the most iconic TV series and characters ever created. The “Best Year Ever” launched with the premiere of “SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout,” an original mixed live-action and animated special earlier this summer, and leads up to the Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies theatrical, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, coming May 2020.

Foxtel Australia to Host Nickelodeon and 'PAW Patrol' Pop-Up Channels Over Summer Holidays

The Australian pay television company Foxtel has announced that it is launching the first of seven Kids Pop-Up Channels with Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., Cartoon Network and Boomerang programming beginning Friday, November 15, 2019!


These will be open to all set-top-box subscribers for over 15 weeks during the school holidays and over summer.

Each of the new Kids Pop-Up Channels will run for two weeks or more until they finish up Saturday, February 29, 2020. The news follows Foxtel hosting a SpongeBob SquarePants Pop Up Channel in September 2019 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Nickelodeon's beloved animated series.

Foxtel’s new Kids Pop-Up Channels in order of broadcast on Channel 700:

The Cartoon Network Classics Pop-Up Channel is the first Kids Pop-Up channel to launch on November 15 from 6am and running to November 29. The classic Cartoon Network programming featured includes The Flintstones, The Jetsons, The Tom & Jerry Show, Ed, Edd N’ Eddy, Cow & Chicken, Courage The Cowardly Dog, Samurai Jack, Dexter’s Laboratory, and Johnny Bravo.

Nickelodeon’s PAW Patrol Pop-Up Channel (shouldn't that be Pup-Up?) will follow starting on November 29 and running to December 13 featuring back-to-back mega-hit PAW Patrol for two whole weeks.

In the lead up to Christmas, the Looney Tunes Pop-Up Channel will launch from December 13 to December 27 featuring Baby Looney Tunes, New Looney Tunes, The Looney Tunes Show, Taz-Mania, Bugs Bunny, and The Sylvester & Tweety Mysteries.

Over the New Year, Cartoon Network is launching the Scooby-Doo Pop-Up Channel from December 27 to January 10 with two weeks of everyone’s favourite dog and detective squad in Scooby-Doo back-to-back.

The Nick Summer Pop-Up Channel will follow on from January 10 to January 24 with popular Nickelodeon shows SpongeBob SquarePants, Rainbow Butterfly Unicorn Kitty, The Loud House, Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn, Henry Danger, new reality series America’s Most Musical Family, Sam & Cat, iCarly, Victorious, Hey Arnold!, Rugrats, CatDog, School Of Rock, Knight Squad, The Thundermans, Big Time Rush, Game Shakers, and 100 Things To Do Before High School.

The Cartoon Network Lego Pop-Up Channel will air from January 24 to February 7 featuring all the best of the Lego programming including Lego Friends, Lego Friends – Girls On A Mission, Ninjago, Ninjago – Master Of Spinjitzu, Nexo Knights, and Mixels.

Rounding out the summer is the final Pop-Up Cartoon Network Superheroes Pop-Up Channel from February 7 to February 29 including Bakugan, Transformers, DC Super Hero Girls, Green Lantern, Justice League Unlimited, The Batman, Thundercats, and Teen Titans.

According to a LinkedIn post by Frank founder and CEO Andrew Bloch, Nickelodeon Big Base Camp will be "a truly immersive family adventure that allows kids to be part of the show as they explore five different worlds".

Kids (and their parents) will get the chance to meet SpongeBob SquarePants and PAW Patrol and see other Nickelodeon favourites like The Thundermans, Henry Danger and more.

"This is a dream client for the agency, not to mention the major brownie points it has won me with my eight-year-old son," Bloch wrote on social media.

It’s time for SLIME! Over the years, Nickelodeon has slimed some of the biggest celebrities on the planet, from Justin Bieber and Will Smith, to David Beckham and Sir Andy Murray! Watch as we take you on the journey of SLIME before turning the SLIME on you!

BIKINI BOTTOM BEACH
Bikini Bottom Beach is all about fun and play! Kids can get creative in the craft area, before hopping on the Top Wing Bouncy Castle. When they’ve finished exploring the Ball Pool, there’s plenty of time to relax with non-stop entertainment on our mainstage! London, 13th November 2019 - Nickelodeon, has today announced specially priced early bird ticket sales for its first ever Nickelodeon Big Base Camp, an epic family adventure through a truly immersive experience, running from the 4th – 13th April 2020.

Nickelodeon Big Base Camp allows kids to be part of the show, with five different worlds to explore and keep them entertained. Kids will be able to gain new skills and face challenges head on, from racing against the clock to solve the mystery of Hunter Street Escape Room, learning key superhero skills at the Thunderman’s School for Superheroes, to trying to make their way through the perilous Henry Danger’s Man Cave. No matter the activity, parents can rest assured that there will be an abundance of Nickelodeon fun and slime to be had, for both themselves and kids alike.

Taking over the London venue, Magazine – conveniently located three minutes from Greenwich Station – Nickelodeon Big Base Camp will become a home away from home for Nickelodeon’s show characters and children will get the chance to meet SpongeBob SquarePants, PAW Patrol and see The Thundermans, Henry Danger and many more.

The excitement doesn’t stop there, as Nickelodeon Big Base Camp will host its very own iconic and satisfyingly messy SLIME TIME area to complete the Nickelodeon experience. The event will also give kids the opportunity to immortalise their experience in Nick Studios with stunt videos, voiceovers and green screens – the ideal addition to an event designed to make kids the stars of the show.

What’s more, whilst the big kids are off becoming superheroes, spies and stars, the Nickelodeon Fair and SpongeBob’s Bikini Bottom Beach will have plenty on offer to keep smaller adventurers happy. Kids will be able to have a play in PAW Patrols Adventure Soft Play Area and slip and slide down the Top Wing Helter Skelter.
