The Premiere of 'SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout' Achieves Sponge-Tastic Ratings for Nickelodeon USA

The premiere of “SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout”, Nickelodeon's brand-new hour-long special to commemorate the 20th anniversary of SpongeBob SquarePants on Friday, July 12, at 7:00 p.m. (ET/PT) was watched by a spongeriffic 2,235,000 viewers across Nick, Nicktoons and TeenNick!

Demo breakdown:

Nickelodeon: 1,827,000 (0.37)
Nicktoons: 274,000 (0.06)
TeenNick: 134,000 (0.04)

(Numbers in brackets = P18-49 ratings)

The sponge-tastic ratings marks the show's highest ratings since the premiere of "Whale Watching" in August 2018. “SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout” has also become the highest rated broadcast for Nickelodeon and all kids television networks in the U.S. for 2019.

It’s SpongeBob’s birthday in “SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout,” which features for the first time the celebrated voice talent behind SpongeBob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, Sandy, Squidward and Plankton - Tom Kenny, Bill Fagerbakke, Clancy Brown, Carolyn Lawrence, Roger Bumpass and Mr. Lawrence, respectively - playing live-action doppelgänger versions of the animated characters they voice! In the one-hour special, Bikini Bottom is getting ready for a very special day: SpongeBob's birthday! To mark the occasion, Sandy, "helped" (read: hindered) by the inhabitants of the underwater city, decide to organise a surprise birthday party for SpongeBob.

In order to keep the birthday boy away from the preparations, Patrick and SpongeBob go on a crazy trip to the surface world, where they come across a few familiar characters such as JimBob and Manward during lunchtime rush at The Trusty Slab restaurant. Meanwhile, the Bikini Bottom residents set up a surprise party for SpongeBob.

The special also features special guest stars David Hasselhoff (Baywatch, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie), Kel Mitchell (All That, Kenan & Kel, Good Burger, Game Shakers), Jack Griffo (The Thundermans) and Daniella Perkins (Knight Squad), and cameos from Jace Norman (Henry Danger), Victoria Beckham, Tiffany Haddish, Sigourney Weaver (Ghostbusters), JoJo Siwa, Michael Strahan, RuPaul and Gilbert Gottfried. (#893)

The debut of “SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout” kicks off "Best Year Ever", Nickelodeon's year-long global celebration commemorating 20 years of SpongeBob SquarePants, one of the most iconic TV series and characters ever created, which includes the launch of the official SpongeBob SquarePants YouTube channel, brand-new merchandise and a app, and will lead up to the Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies theatrical, The SpongeBob Movie: It's a Wonderful Sponge, coming 2020.

Nickelodeon USA to Drastically Reduce NickRewind's Hours from Monday, July 15, 2019

Nickelodeon USA is set to significantly reduce the amount of hours its NickRewind programming block, Nickelodeon's television destination for the most loved Nick content from the 1990s and beyond, airs on TeenNick each night. Currently airing every night for seven hours between 11:00 p.m - 6:00 a.m. (ET/PT), beginning Monday, July 15, 2019, Nick will reduce NickRewind's broadcast hours to just two hours per night, airing between 4:02 a.m. - 6:00 a.m. (ET/PT) during the early hours of each morning.

In lieu of classic Nickelodeon programming, TeenNick will air more teen-centric programming from MTV and Awesomeness - a media company that focuses on creating original content for Gen Z which Viacom acquired in 2018.

Shows from MTV include: the teen reality series Made (weekdays at 12pm, 3pm and 8pm), the 2011 live-action supernatural drama Teen Wolf (starting with season 4; weeknights at 9pm), reality series My Super Sweet 16 (weeknights from 12-1am) and Parental Control (weeknights from 1-2am). The series will air as part of a 'MTV on TeenNick' style block.

Shows from AwesomenessTV, which have mostly ran on streaming services in the U.S. up until this point, includes: Betch, Guidance, Zac & Mia, Love Daily. All four series run weeknights from 10pm-midnight and encore from 2-4am as part of an "AwesomenessTV on TeenNick" branded programming block.

Kel Mitchell on Teaching Amanda Bynes Comedy Tricks and If She'll Make an 'All That' Reboot Cameo

Kel Mitchell is looking back at his time on the beloved Nickelodeon sketch comedy series All That, and opening up about what he taught co-star Amanda Bynes.

Mitchell talked with ET Live on the site of the hotly anticipated Good Burger pop-up restaurant in Los Angeles, and he reflected on his happy memories of sharing the screen with Bynes.

"I love Amanda, she's like [my] little sister. She's so fearless," Mitchell, 40, shared about his former co-star, who recently graduated from fashion design school. "I remember her being on set, she told me, 'Hey Kel, I wanna do the physical comedy that you do.' So I used to show her little tricks to do that would make her comedy just awesome."

"She did everything so great, so awesome, she was super fearless," he added.

While Bynes dealt with a rocky few years, she's rededicated herself to her health, fashion school and returning to acting, which Mitchell said seems like a great fit for the 33-year-old actress.

"She always had style, so going to fashion school was definitely what was up," he said, beaming.

As for the possibility of welcoming Bynes on for a cameo appearance on the long-awaited upcoming All That reboot, Mitchell was wildly excited about the idea.

"That would be crazy! We really want her to do a cameo in All That. We've been talking about that," Mitchell explained. "So, Amanda, come on, girl! Call ya brother up!"

Kenan Thompson, who also starred on the original All That alongside Kel and Amanda, has also expressed interest in Amanda making a cameo on the revived All That series, which he is executive producing with Kel.

To launch the revived series, original All That cast members Kel, Lori Beth Denberg and Josh Server have been making cameos in episodes, reviving iconic characters such as "Ed" the Good Burger guy and the Loud Librarian.

The Good Burger pop-up restaurant, located on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, opens its doors on July 10. Visit https://www.goodburgerpopup.com for more information and to book your tickets!

Catch brand-new episodes of All That, Saturdays at 8:30 p.m. (ET/PT), only on Nickelodeon!

Kel Mitchell Reveals If Amanda Bynes Will Appear On ‘All That’ Reboot — ‘We’re Talking To Her’

With the ‘All That’ reboot in full swing, will fans see Amanda Bynes return to the show that launched her career? ‘Good Burger’ star Kel Mitchell tells us EXCLUSIVELY on how they’re trying to make that happen.

All That is back! The beloved Nickelodeon 90’s sketch comedy show that helped Nick Cannon, Kenan Thompson, Kel Mitchell become household names returned in June 2019 with a brand new cast. However, some familiar faces – like Josh Server and Lori Beth Denberg — have popped up to give fans of the original series a treat. So, will Amanda Bynes, who got her start on the original All That before getting her own spin-off, make a special cameo on the new show?

Kel Mitchell — who is an executive producer on the reboot, along with Kenan Thompson — talked EXCLUSIVELY with HollywoodLife about the possibility of Amanda’s return while launching The Good Burger Pop Up Restaurant in West Hollywood, California. The co-owner of the hottest burger joint also dished on how the original All That cast stays in contact and the possibility about a Good Burger reboot.

HollywoodLife: How nostalgic is this for you?

Kel Mitchell: It’s been awesome. This is really surreal.

Talk to me about what it’s been like now that all that the reboot is back as well?

To executive produce that — To be producing it with my cast mate that became my brother? It’s just been awesome. We’re having a blast and giving advice to new kids, and the kids are so funny. All seven of them.

Do you and Kenan ever talk about doing just a Good Burger reboot? I’m sure you get asked all the time.

Yes. We have been talking about it. We’re talking about GB too. Just know that we’re ready. We’re ready, but some other people, they a little higher up. They gotta make it happen. But yes, we’re down. We’re totally down for making it happen.

Do you think we’re getting closer to it finally happening?

We are getting very close. The story has to be good. We’ve had a few ideas that we chopped around to make it happen. We’re excited. But until then you could come to The Good Burger Pop Up.

Will we see him here too, or have you guys talked about doing something here together?

Yes. We have talked about it. He is in New York, so he’s like boom. But he will be here because we’ll be here for six months so he’ll be here.

I can’t wait. Have you guys all kept in touch over the… All of you All Thaters?

[Angelique Bates] goes to my church. Lori Beth [Danberg] and Josh [Server]; we have been wanting to do all that; playing around, guest starring a little bit. You know we’ve seen them all, and we all stay in contact on Instagram. So staying in contract with Lisa [Foiles]. Katrina [Johnson], everybody. Yeah. That’s just a whole new cast. Yeah.

Any chance at all we… I mean Amanda Bynes to make an appearance or have you heard from her, Nick Cannon?.

Yes. Amanda just graduated from fashion school, so I’m super excited about that. That’s like my little sister, so I’m excited about that. We would love for her to come on all that; Nick Cannon as well. I talked to Nick yesterday, so we’re excited about that. That’s my boy.

Do you think they both will come on at some point?

Of course.

So exciting. So you guys all keep in touch?

Everybody keeps in touch. Yeah.

So is there a group text? Do you guys get together once a month?

Instagram. We talk through Instagram. We talk through social media. That’s how we all get together.

So this would really be like Amanda’s come back into the industry a little bit for a while. Have you thought about that?

I don’t know if I’ve thought about that, but I think it’d be great. For Amanda to do that. That’d be fun. I mean she’s definitely in fashion school right now, so we’re excited about that. So we’ll just give positive vibes to that.

So she will, or she won’t be? Are you guys figuring out if she would come back?

We’re talking to her. Yeah.

Are you still planning on starting your own Orange Soda Line, and do you still love it?

Yes. I do. I do, but I drink a lot healthier now, so we’re definitely trying to get like an electrolyte or some type of pre-workout. Yeah.

Favorite All That skit over the years?

Of course, “Good Burger.” Since we’re right here, in the Good Burger pop up. I opened up my own restaurant, man.

Do people still come up to you on the street and say, like what-

They do. They come up. They say, “Welcome to Good Burger.” at red lights, all over the place. Yeah.

All That airs weekly on Saturdays at 8:30 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon.

Kel Mitchell On Why Drake Bell Slammed ‘All That’ Reboot — ‘He Was Wrong’

Kel Mitchell talked EXCLUSIVELY to HL about a series of things at the new Good Burger pop up restaurant in West Hollywood, CA, including fellow Nickelodeon star Drake Bell’s negative comments about the ‘All That’ reboot, and he admitted he doesn’t agree with his opinion.

Kel Mitchell, 40, is going back to his Good Burger sketch roots with the new Good Burger pop up restaurant, and during the opening of the location in West Hollywood, CA, he talked about the famous old school All That segment along with his thoughts on fellow Nickelodeon actor Drake Bell‘s recent diss about the show’s reboot. 33-year-old Drake recently made headlines for responding to pics and videos of the new cast of the reboot, which debuted on June 15, and making harsh mocking comments. “This is LITERALLY THE WORST THING I’VE SEEN IN a loooong time!!!” he wrote on Instagram over a photo of the new cast members, whose ages range from 12-15. He also compared them with a pic of the original cast, including Kel, and wrote “Not EVEN CLOSE.”

Although the judgments from Drake, who starred on the All That spinoff, The Amanda Show, made some fans upset, Kel admitted he’s not letting it bother him because he doesn’t agree. “I don’t care. I don’t know. You know what? He’s not really a good fan of All That, you know what I mean?” Kel EXCLUSIVELY told us at the pop up restaurant. “And so, hey, show’s awesome. The ratings prove it that we’re awesome, so he was wrong. You’re wrong Drake Bell.”

Kel has a point. The reboot got a lot of attention when it aired on Nickelodeon and included support and cameo appearances by many of the original cast members, including Lori Beth Denberg, who was known for her popular skit Vital Information, Josh Server, who acted alongside Kel as “Ear Boy” opposite his “Pizza Face”, and of course, Kel himself, who was known for various memorable skits, including Good Burger and Coach Kreeton. The new cast members EXCLUSIVELY told us last month that although it’s reboot with new people, it still follows the premise of the original.

“I feel that the new reboot still stays true to the original, but it’s more modernized with new kids and it still brings back some of the old sketches and the original cast,” new cast member Lex Lumpkin said. “It’s the same old All That with a brand-new cast,” co-star Nathan Janak agreed. “It’s classic sketches, the same type of comedy, with an all-new cast and maybe some even old cast members, too.”

The Good Burger pop up restaurant, which is inspired by the All That sketch, opened on July 10 in Los Angeles, CA and will remain open until the end of 2019.

Latest update (7/16) - CBS and Viacom continue to bob along with merger talks and are now circling Aug. 8 as an internal deadline to agree to a deal, according to people familiar with the matter.

The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Team Up with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in New Comic Series from BOOM! Studios

The Power Rangers have crossed over quite a bit with teams from other seasons, but only once before have they crossed over with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. That happened during Power Rangers In Space, but the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are set to team-up for the first time with the heroes in a half-shell thanks to BOOM! Studios' brand new miniseries, and ComicBook has unveiled a Turtley Awesome first look!

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 (of 5) will be written by Necessary Evil writer Ryan Parrott and drawn by Beyond The Grid artist Simone di Meo, and will have the two iconic teams attempting to survive a world where Shredder and the Green Ranger have combined forces.

As you can see in the gorgeous artwork below, the series will boast a main cover by Power Rangers and Buffy the Vampire Slayer artist Dan Mora, and the series will also feature Turtle Ranger Helmet variant covers by Mighty Morphin Power Rangers cover artist Goni Montes. For Parrott, this is a surreal dream and quite a difficult secret to keep.

"Honestly, I'm pretty certain keeping this project a secret has taken years off my life. These two iconic franchises were my TV parents, each teaching me valuable life lessons thirty minutes at a time. The Power Rangers and the Ninja Turtles are too insanely awesome not to bring together. I mean, they're both color-coded teenage martial artists who fight monsters! It just makes too much sense!" said writer Ryan Parrott. "A huge thank you to Hasbro and Nickelodeon for letting me play with so many of their wonderful toys, as it is truly an honor to be a part of such an exciting crossover. I'm the luckiest kid in the world, and I cannot wait for you all to see what we've been putting together."

Simone di Meo returns to Power Rangers after his gorgeous stint on Beyond The Grid, and this is pretty much a dream for him as well.

"It’s an honor to be able to work on this amazing project. I'm very happy to be a part of this, one of the crossovers I've been waiting for since I was a kid,” di Meo said. “Drawing these two teams together is a dream come true!"

As Senior Editor Dafna Pleban explains, this event couldn't be in better hands.

“No one could possibly love the Power Rangers or the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles more than the creative team at the helm of this epic event! Which means they’ve got every dream team up scenario you can think of jam-packed into the pages of every issue.” Pleban said “Monsters will grow. Shells will get kicked. And that thing you’re really hoping we’ll do? Yeah, that’s in here, too.”

You can check out the official description for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles below.

"The Power Rangers arrive in New York City to find Tommy Oliver - AKA The Mighty Morphin Green Ranger - but soon discover he's joined forces with the villainous Shredder and the Foot Clan! As the Rangers are sent reeling by this betrayal, they're confronted by another (fr)enemy - the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Can these heroes find a way to work together to defeat the bad guys and save the world from total destruction?!"

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 hits comic stores on Wednesday, December 4th.

The news follows the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' recent successful comic team up with Batman, which was also turned into an animated movie.

Are you excited for the Power Rangers TMNT team-up? Let me know in the comments below!

Nickelodeon Universe at American Dream to Feature TMNT, SpongeBob & Slime Themed Roller Coasters

Originally published: Thursday, February 7, 2019.

COWABUNGA! Nickelodeon Universe at American Dream has announced that the upcoming Nickelodeon-branded theme park will feature rollercoasters inspired by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, SpongeBob SquarePants and SLIME!

Update (7/16) - Nickelodeon Universe at American Dream will also include a Blue's Clues merry-go-round ride!

Update (7/3): American Dream has announced that it will welcome the public to its opening on Friday, October 25, 2019 where we will feature the launch of the property’s unprecedented indoor Nickelodeon Universe Theme Park! See below for the press release!

Update (4/5): American Dream has begun testing its amusement park rides inside the mega-mall’s Nickelodeon Universe theme park — a telltale sign that the retail and entertainment extravaganza will finally open this year, after nearly 15 years of delays! Additionally, drone footage from the ongoing construction at American Dream at the Meadowlands filmed by NJ Advance Media for NJ.com has revealed that banners (pictured above) for the upcoming Nickelodeon Universe amusement park, including one featuring SpongeBob SquarePants saying his "I'm ready" catchphrase, have appeared on the side of the mega-mall! Click here for more details!

Two rollercoasters we’ve already heard about -- and two we haven’t -- were revealed at a recent gathering of roller coaster enthusiasts and industry insiders. The thrill rides are in the works inside the massive theme park in the under-construction American Dream mega-mall in Bergen County, New Jersey.

The American Coaster Enthusiasts held an annual “EastCoaster” gathering at Hershey Park this past weekend where representatives from Nickelodeon Universe unveiled four roller coasters that will be part of the indoor theme park at the American Dream, Elizabeth Ringas, communications coordinator for ACE said.

Triple Five, the developer of the American Dream, announced more than a year ago that two record-setting roller coasters would be coming to the site. But their themes and character-associations were not known until this ACE announcement.

Roller coaster enthusiasts rejoiced. Here’s what ACE has shared of the news:

The roller coaster with the record-setting steepness will be called the TMNT Shellraiser (TMNT = Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle). It’s from German-based Gerstlauer, and the model is referred to as the “Eurofighter.” It will hold the record as the steepest plunge on a rollercoaster in the world.

The ride will pause at the top of a 122-foot drop, giving riders a glimpse of New York City - the home of the Turtles - across the Hudson River!

The other record-setter we’ve been hearing about has now been identified as “The Shredder” -- likely named after the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle antagonist, Shredder. It is also a Gerstlauer model and it will hold the record for being the tallest and longest free-spinning roller coaster.

Two previously unmentioned roller coasters were also unveiled: Sandy’s Blasting Bronco, inspired SpongeBob SquarePants’ dive suit-wearing friend, Sandy Cheeks, and Slime Streak, inspired by Nickelodeon's famous slime!

The final new ride unveiled is called Slime Streak. It’s manufactured by Kansas-based Chance Rides and is less heart-pounding and more family-oriented than the record-setting roller coasters planned for American Dream.

Representatives for American Dream and Nickelodeon Universe did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The 3 million-square-foot American Dream mega-mall is expected to open this spring. About 55 percent of it will be devoted to entertainment, including the 8-acre indoor Nickelodeon Universe amusement park. The rest will be retail.

They can influence everything from the products we wanted in our lunchboxes, to the figurines on the mantles of our first homes or apartments, to the shirts we buy for our own children and grandchildren. There are classic characters that have endured for decades, such as the Flintstones and Scooby-Doo. There are movies and shows, like My Little Pony, Transformers, and Care Bears, that are known as much for their merchandise as their sequels and reboots. April Fugett, ph.D. (professor, Marshall University), Keith Beard, psy.D. (professor, Marshall University), Britani Black, psy.D. (instructor, marshall University School of Medicine), Carrie Dean, m.A., and Casey Collins, M.A. (Marshall University) will discuss their research and findings from a study of participants examining personality measure results with selection of preferred “nostalgic” characters and shows demonstrating how personality informs our choices of the characters we identify with and follow, often for our entire lives. More People Know SpongeBob's Address Than That of the U.S. President

The lovable sponge is a global cultural phenomenon with few peers.

It’s Crazy How Well People Know SpongeBob!

July 2019 marks 20 years of SpongeBob SquarePants’ on-air antics. Like Nickelodeon itself, the iconic yellow sponge long ago outgrew the boundaries of his televised domain, spinning off more than US $13 billion worth of merchandise, two (soon to be three) motion pictures, and a Tony Award-winning Broadway show (which is about to embark on a nationwide tour).
