Back-to-School season is officially in full swing and it means one thing — supply shopping.

On average, a teacher in the US spends $900 of their own money for classroom supplies each year, and arts education programs are greatly underfunded across the country.

This is not OK.

Things, however, are starting to change thanks to Crayon Collection. The non-profit that supports teachers, the environment and arts education by donating gently-used crayons to teachers hosted a One Million Crayon Drive Donation Event that took place last Saturday, August 11th at Westfield Culver City. It focused on inviting local Los Angeles, California-area teachers to come pick up free crayons for the school year in order to give students access to arts education and reduce the personal funds they are forced to spend on school supplies.

“I’m glad they see that our communities need help,” a teacher on line told Celeb Secrets. “It may be just crayons, but it makes a huge difference. These boxes mean so much to children. When I was little and got that box, it was the best feeling in the world, and for me to give that back to my kids, I see that its going to do the same thing for them.”

In addition to donating crayons, the family-friendly event had free learning opportunities for the whole community, including a hands-on workshops where kids worked with animators from Nickelodeon to create crayon art projects, a Crayon Collection Color Kindness Program where students sorted, re-packed, and included their own handwritten note of positivity for the students receiving the crayons, and more. There was also an interactive maze designed by artist Yassi Mazandi that was made out of crayons for guests to walk through!

Overall, the event was a huge success. It broke the GUINNESS WORLD RECORD by donating 1,009,500 crayons in eight hours, meaning TONS of students will be able to color their way to success this upcoming school year.
