'Injustice 2' To Add The 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' In Fighter Pack 3

North American video game developer NetherRealm Studios (Mortal Kombat) has announced the Turtley Awesome news that Injustice 2's next downloadable fighter pack will bring Nickelodeon's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to the studio's hit superhero-filled fighting game! Booyakasha! Fighter Pack 3 will include Donatello, Raphael, Michelangelo and Leonardo, alongside two DC Universe heroes, Atom and the Enchantress. NetherRealm announced the news at the Eleague Injustice 2 World Championship playoffs in Atlanta, GA.

A release date for Fighter Pack 3 was not announced, though Atom will be available in early access on Tuesday, December 12.

There's no word on how the TMNT will play in the game. Each Fighter Pack is supposed to offer three fighters, and if each Turtle is a distinct character, then Fighter Pack 3 would offer a total of six characters. Alternatively, there's a base Turtle and the others are different Premier Skins for that character, similar to Flash/Reverse-Flash and Supergirl/Power Girl. However, since NetherRealm doesn't usually add six playable characters per DLC pack, it’s likely the turtles will play as a group with one being selectable while the others offer assist by executing special moves or lending a hand in combos. From the way the trailer ends, it looks like Leonardo--leader of the Ninja Turtles--will be the primary character and his brothers will back him up. NetherRealm could surprise fans by introducing a unique tag-mechanic for them, though.

In the trailer, which you can see below, the Ninja Turtles interrupt a battle between Enchantress and Atom, and when Michelangelo calls dibs on fighting the "magic lady" he's told that they "fight as a team" by Leonardo. More than just a cool cinematic moment, this could be a tease of how the squad will fight.

The addition of the Ninja Turtles, Atom and Enchantress will bring Injustice 2’s roster to 41 (or 38, if you count the Turtles as a single character). NetherRealm has released two add-on Fighter Packs already: the first included Red Hood, Sub Zero and Starfire; the second included Black Manta, Hellboy and Raiden.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles previously crossed over into the DC Universe, thanks to 2015’s six-issue mini-series Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. DC, Nickelodeon and IDW Publishing announced a sequel to that series earlier this year. This is the first time the pizza-loving Heroes in A Half-Shell will appear beside Batman and the rest in an actual video game.

Donatello, Raphael, Michelangelo and Leonardo have appeared in fighting games before, such as in the arcade game Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters, which was eventually ported to the NES, SNES and Sega Genesis, and in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash-Up, Ubisoft’s Super Smash Bros.-like fighting game for Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 2.

Fighter Packs 1 and 2 cost US$19.99 each, so it's likely that Fighter Pack 3 will cost the same. Injustice 2 characters are also $5.99 each. If you've picked up the Ultimate Edition of Injustice, you already have access to Fighter Pack 3. Injustice 2 Ultimate Edition costs $99.99.

Injustice 2 is already available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The PC version will launch on November 14, 2017.

The news comes as Nickelodeon brings the networks hit CG-animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series to a close, ahead of the network's upcoming 2D animated TMNT series, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, slated to premiere on Nick USA during Fall 2018.
