Rocko’s Modern Life revival debuts first footage
No woke trend is safe

It’s not enough to report back that Nickelodeon’s Rocko’s Modern Life Comic-Con panel was a hoot, so fresh off the O-Town press, the network has unveiled the first bit of footage from the anticipated revival.

Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling will reunite its original creator, Joe Murray, with the entire principal voice cast (as well as director Cosmo Segurson) for a one-off TV movie special that finds Rocko encountering the social and technological ills of 2017 (or, 2017-ish) for the first time.

The idea behind the reboot: After having been blasted into outer space with Heffer and Filburt in 1996, Rocko returns to Earth and struggles to fit into the world that the 21st century has long since accepted. Food trucks, iPhones, energy drinks, 3-D printers, and social media are all ripe for skewering by the gang.

The footage from the special — which will premiere on Nickelodeon in 2018 — made its big debut on Thursday during a panel featuring Murray, Segurson, and voice actors Carlos Alazraqui, Tom Kenny, Doug Lawrence, and Charlie Adler. Nickelodeon will follow up its Rocko panel with another TV reboot panel at Comic-Con — this one featuring the cast and creator of Hey Arnold! — on Friday.

Nickelodeon shares preview of Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling at Comic-Con: Watch

Rocko, Heffer, Filburt, Spunky, and the whole gang are back from space for the first time in two decades

Comic-Con isn’t only about superheroes and comic books, despite its name. Sometimes, it’s just about nerdy bits of nostalgia, and that’s exactly what was on display at Nickelodeon’s panel on Thursday. The network brought along a first look at the made for TV movie special Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling, and the preview has now come online.

The plot of the cartoon finds Rocko and the gang returning to Earth after being stranded in space since 1996. According to the synopsis, “Rocko has trouble accepting this 21st century modern life, while Heffer and Filburt embrace every aspect of new technology, social media and the endless diversity of food trucks. Rocko whole-heartedly believes that his nostalgia for the past can save him from the tortures of the modern world.” In the preview, the gang encounters smartphones, toxic energy drinks, and ridiculously themed food trucks. There’s even an updated homage to the original series’ classic opening credits sequence.

Every cast member from the original four-season run has returned for the special. Carlos Alazraqui will voice Rocko, Spunky, and Leon; Tom Kenny returns as Heffer, Chuck, Really Really Big Man; Mr. Lawrence, a.k.a. Doug Lawrence, will revive Filburt Turtle; Charlie Adler will play Ed and Bev Bighead, Mr. Dupette, Grandpa Wolfe, and Mrs. Fathead; Linda Wallem will lend her talents to Aunt Gretchen and Dr. Hutchinson; Jill Talley will voice Nosey; and executive producer, writer, and series creator Joe Murray will bring Ralph to life. Also joining the voice cast will be Steve Little (Adventure Time) and Cosmo Segurson.

Check out the sneak peek above, and get ready to get the television out of the hall closet when Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling airs next year. The animated wallaby joins a number of NickToons make their return, with Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie set for a fall debut and another special featuring Invader Zim also in the works.

Spunky! Here’s Your First Look At The ‘Rocko’s Modern Life’ TV Movie

The gag-tastic ‘90s cartoon is making a 21st-century return.

The unluckiest wallaby to ever grace the streets of O-Town is making his triumphant return, courtesy of Nickelodeon executives with a strong case of ’90s nostalgia.

On Thursday, the network gave fans at Comic-Con a sneak peek into the upcoming “Rocko’s Modern Life” TV movie, subtitled “Static Cling.” The San Diego event brought original voice actors Carlos Alazraqui (Rocko), Tom Kenny (Heffer), Doug Lawrence (Filbert) and Charlie Adler (Mr. Big Head and Mrs. Big Head) back together ahead of the animated special’s scheduled 2018 debut.

Nickelodeon also released a short plot summary for “Static Cling,” which reads in part:

Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling brings the characters back to Earth after being lost in outer space since 1996. Rocko has trouble accepting this 21st century modern life, while Heffer and Filburt embrace every aspect of new technology, social media and the endless diversity of food trucks. Rocko whole-heartedly believes that his nostalgia for the past can save him from the tortures of the modern world.
If, over the past 20-plus years, you’d been wondering whether or not Rocko and his pals would be the kinds of animals who salivate over the latest iPhone ― erm, oPhone release, maybe this trailer will give you a sense of closure. Though you’ll have to wait until next year to find out whether our protagonist succumbs to the so-called “tortures of the modern world.”

Rocko’s Modern Life still “very dangerous” in the first footage from new special

Last month, we reported that Nickelodeon had managed to assemble the entire voice cast from the Nicktoon classic Rocko’s Modern Life for its upcoming revival special, Static Cling. Today, the network showed off its first footage from the special at Comic-Con, reuniting viewers with the nightmarish world of O-Town 20 years after the show went off the air.

The special’s premise is pretty simple: after spending the years 1996-2017 in space, Rocko and his pals Heffer and Philburt have finally returned to Earth, just in time for the show to lampoon Starbucks, 3-D movies, and the same obsessive consumerism the series has always loved to lampoon. And even if the targets of that cartoon satire are a little dated, it still feels like the old Rocko’s, pitting its good-natured wallaby hero against the big, mean, dumb jerks of the world, right down to a recreation of the show’s old intro that’s been updated for our ever-more-modern lives.
