Hulu Adds ViacomCBS Networks to Live TV Service

Hulu, more than four years after launching its live TV service, has added ViacomCBS’ cable networks to the line-up.


Starting Friday (April 30), nine ViacomCBS networks will be available on Hulu + Live TV: Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., Comedy Central, BET, VH1, CMT, MTV, TV Land and Paramount Network. The price of the streaming package will remain at $64.99/month (with SVOD ads) and $70.99/month (with no SVOD ads).

Another five ViacomCBS linear nets — NickToons, TeenNick, BET Her, MTV2 and MTV Classic — will be available in Hulu’s Entertainment add-on package (which remains priced at $7.99/month extra). The other channels in that package are CNBC, American Heroes Channel, World Cooking Channel, Crime + Investigation, Destination America, Discovery Family, Discovery Life, DIY, Great American Country, Military History Channel and Science.

In addition, under the distribution deal between Disney’s Hulu and ViacomCBS, Hulu will add a collection of library shows from the media company to its on-demand service, including Sister Sister, Moesha and Freaks and Geeks.

“We are excited to have reached an expanded agreement with Hulu that underscores the value of our powerful portfolio of brands to next-generation TV platforms and viewers,” said Ray Hopkins, President, U.S. Networks Distribution, ViacomCBS when the deal was first announced in January. “Hulu continues to be a great partner, and this agreement ensures that Hulu + Live TV subscribers are now able to enjoy the full breadth of our leading content across news, sports and entertainment for the first time.”

It’s another example of co-opetition among media conglomerates as direct-to-consumer streaming era is in full swing. In early March, ViacomCBS rebranded — and expanded — the CBS All Access service to become Paramount+. Disney has been aggressively pushing its streaming products worldwide, including offering a discounted bundle of Disney+, Hulu and ESPN Plus in the U.S.

Hulu + Live TV now offers more than 75 live TV channels in the baseline package. Customers also get access to the core Hulu on-demand service (which costs $5.99/month with ads or $11.99/month without ads as a standalone offering).

HBO Max Orders 'The Brothers Garcia' Sequel

The Garcias are getting the family back together.

HBO Max has given a 10-episode order to The Garcias, a sequel to the family comedy The Brothers Garcia that aired on Nickelodeon for four seasons from 2000 to 2004, Variety has learned.

The series hails from New Cadence Productions, the banner headed by Brothers Garcia co-creator and executive producer Jeff Valdez and Sol Trujilo. Production is scheduled to begin in Puerto Aventuras, Mexico in June.


The original series, billed as the first English-language sitcom to have an all Latino cast and creative team, revolved around the Mexican American Garcia family, narrated by Larry, the adult version of one of the family’s sons. Larry recounts his life alongside George, Carlos, and Lorena (his two brothers and twin sister, respectively), and the way they deal with everyday problems such as school, work, growing up, and all living in one house in San Antonio, Texas.

Reviving the world of Brothers Garcia has been a long mission for Valdez. The new iteration finds the Garcia children grown up and gathering with their parents for a three-month summer vacation in a luxury home by the beach.

The six core original cast members will reprise their roles. A number of original writers, directors and crew members from the Nickelodeon series are signing on again to bring the Garcia clan back to life.

ViacomCBS owns the original Brothers Garcia. Valdez was relentless in pursuing the right to mount a sequel because he sees clear demand for an unabashedly family friendly series about a family that happens to be Mexican American. More urgently, there is the sad fact that the representation of Latinx stories, talent and creatives in mainstream TV hasn’t increased much since Brothers Garcia bowed more than 20 years ago.

“The original show was always about a simple slice of life story that happened in this family,” Valdez said. “In every episode there’s a lesson to be learned. We wanted to keep that simple contract with our audience.”

Garcias cast and crew is 90%-plus Latinx, Valdez noted, and inclusive of the many ethnicities therein. The Garcia siblings also now have diverse families of their own, reflecting the increasingly multi-racial complexion of American families.

Valdez is serving as showrunner, with Brothers Garcia alum Joey Gutierrez in the role of head writer.

Ada Maris (Nurses) and Carlos Lacamara (Nurses) are returning in their roles as parents Sonia and Ray Garcia. Alvin Alvarez, Jeffrey Licon and Bobby Gonzalez are back as brothers Larry, Carlos and George, as is Vaneza Pitynski as sister Lorena. John Leguizamo was also featured as the narrator and the voice of the adult Larry Garcia, but it's unclear at this time if he'll be involved in The Garcias.

The series aired on Nickelodeon between 2000 and 2004, and consisted of four seasons with 52 overall episodes.

“I feel like I’m seeing my actual children again. It’s wonderful,” said Maris during a roundtable Zoom interview with Garcias actors and Valdez. “I feel like I have the right to tell Bobby to cut his hair.”

The actors have never stopped running in to fans of the original series and those who have found Brothers Garcia episodes in unauthorized form on YouTube and other platforms. The series ran 50 episodes, plus a 90-minute 2003 telepic The Brothers Garcia: Mysteries of the Maya.

“It was such an exciting and pivotal part of my youth,” said Pitynski. “To be coming back for another generation of The Garcias is weirdly wild and exciting.” Pitynski now works as a digital executive for a record label, but she couldn’t turn down the chance to reunite with her TV family for Garcias.

Lacamara notes with pride that Brothers Garcia was a trailblazer in its depiction of a middle class Latino family. The resort setting of Garcias is by design as part of Valdez’s mission to bring other dimensions to the portrayal of Latinx culture beyond stereotypical tropes that proliferate of drug kingpins, gang members, gardeners, maids and poor-but-proud families.

The Garcias of San Antonio were comfortably middle class. In the present day, one of the Garcia children has hit it big in the new economy lottery, which makes the lengthy stay in a seaside mansion possible.

“We were the first show to show a middle-class Latino family. It’s still a rare thing,” Lacamara said. “And yet it feels so much more normal for everyone to see this these days.”

Licon came of age on Brothers Garcia, working on the series from age 14 to 17. It was quite a training ground on a show that had guest shots by such budding stars as Vanessa Hudgens, Danny Trejo (Dora and the Lost City of Gold), Solange Knowles, Penn Badgley (You) as Eddie Bauer, Brenda Song and Tony Plana, in addition to Ricardo Montalban, Margaret Cho, and George Lopez, who played Mr. Fender in a pair of episodes. Lupe Ontiveros (Selena), Kay Panabaker (Fame), and Camille Guaty (Prison Break) were also featured.

“I don’t think I fully grasped what we were accomplishing with the product we were putting out,” Licon said. “The response has always been overwhelming. People tell me it was their favorite show because they could identify it. I don’t think we realized how many people we were affecting.”

In 2018, when the cast got together at Valdez’s home, a group shot posted on social media went viral among fans. That inspired Valdez to take a straw poll of what viewers might want to see in a reboot. The overwhelming response was a present day look at “what happened to the Garcia kids,” Valdez said.

“I love getting to revisit a character and see where his life is now and the choices that led him here,” Gonzalez said. “I’m excited to have my family back and get a new daughter and wife.”

For Valdez, getting the rights from ViacomCBS and the deal with HBO Max set up was an odyssey (the original series has not been made available for streaming, although bootleg episodes are readily available online). This time around, New Cadence controls Garcias outright. That’s meaningful to Valdez, who gave the family the surname that was his mother’s maiden name.

"We want audiences to see that we are totally American and part of the 'new mainstream,'" exclaimed Valdez. "There are no themes of narcos, border walls, gang bangers or maids anywhere in this series - a fact that we are very proud of and hope that Hollywood will follow suit. We are extremely proud of the fact that this show will easily achieve 90+% positive Latino inclusion both in front of and behind the camera."

“This is truly, on so many levels, a family show,” Valdez said. “Everything for the family.”

"We are excited to be partnering with WarnerMedia, who believes in the project and ordered 10 episodes," added Sol Trujillo, NCP Partner and global media-communications and technology icon. "The themes of our new series are aspirational and universal. The Garcias will be in English and, of course, every episode will end with the trademark, 'Todo para la familia,' which means 'Everything for the family.'"

"This lil show began over two decades ago and when it wrapped I never thought I'd have the opportunity to bring Lorena's dramatics back to the screen," Lorena actress Vaneza Pitynski posted on Instagram. "And yet, here we are thanks to @hbomax and Jeff Valdez. I'm happy we're reuniting and getting the family back together, because as always, todo para la familia."

The Garcias will be shot on location in the Riviera Maya, Mexico, in a town called Puerto Aventuras. The eco-theme parks Xcaret, Xplor, and Xel-Ha will also be shooting locations, with each of these said to add a unique production value to the reboot series. The show is described as a "slice of life of an American family that just happens to be Latino." By shooting the series in San Antonio, Texas, and Mexico, the show juxtaposes an American Latino family in Mexico.

No release date has yet been set, but shooting is expected to begin in May.

Paramount+ Adds 'School of Rock', 'Henry Danger' Season 5 and Two JoJo Siwa Specials

Henry Danger follows the adventures of Henry Hart (Jace Norman) who gets selected by superhero Captain Man (Cooper Barnes) to be his apprentice. Rally Studios Releases Drone Film of Nickelodeon Universe, Mall of America

Rally Studios gained worldwide attention with Bryant Lake Bowl drone footage. Now check out their Mall of America video.


Rally Studios, the Minneapolis creative studio that gained worldwide attention with its drone footage of Bryant Lake Bowl, is at again — this time in a first-person video that captures the highs and lows of Mall of America and its theme park, Nickelodeon Universe.

The Rally team had a goal of not only setting up a drone shoot inside Mall of America, but also to bring in nostalgic storytelling from their days growing up in Minnesota and frequenting the Bloomington mall, said Jay Christensen, a cinematographer at Rally Studios.


“Our entire team has always been huge fans of Mall of America and dreamed of setting up a drone shot there even before the Bryant Lake Bowl footage caught like it did,” Christensen said in a mall-issued news release.

The 2-minute, 17-second video brings viewers through the mall’s atrium for a look at the public art installation, Kaleidoscope, before flying into Nickelodeon Universe, the seven-acre Nickelodeon-branded theme park located in the center of the mall. From there, the drone chases roller coasters and weaves in and out of other attractions before taking viewers eye to eye with the giant sculptures atop The Lego Store.


The video, “The Quack Attack is Back,” also follows along the Rally crew in Rollerblades as a nod to the mall scene in the 1994 movie D2: The Mighty Ducks.

“Working with the Mall was a collaborative effort that brought together like-minded folks who wanted to try making the seemingly impossible possible. And that’s just what we did,” Christensen said. “After a busy morning of strapping on Rollerblades and chasing rollercoasters with a drone, we are extremely proud of this footage and look forward to future shoots with the Mall of America team.”

Rally Studios is best known for its recent release of “Right Up Our Alley,” an 87-second, viral video of a one shot first-person view drone swooping through Bryant Lake Bowl in Minneapolis that has captivated millions of people worldwide.

The new drone clip pays homage to The Mighty Ducks, the ‘90s hockey film shot in the Twin Cities.

The video started picking up viral steam when it was posted on Reddit in March, and has been featured in news outlets worldwide, including BBC News, CNN and the New York Times. According to Rally Studios, it caught the attention of James Gunn, director of Guardians of the Galaxy, who on Twitter described the video as “stupendous” and then formally invited Rally to join his crew in London later this year when they shoot Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

The drone footage brings viewers through the Atrium of Mall of America for an unparalleled view of the public art installation, Kaleidoscope, before flying into Nickelodeon Universe, the seven-acre theme park located in the center of Mall of America. From there, the drone chases roller coasters and weaves in and out of other attractions before taking viewers eye to eye with the giant sculptures atop The LEGO store.

In the wake of its Bryant Lake Bowl success, the Minneapolis production company pays homage to Minnesota with a flight through the Bloomington megamall.

Rally Studios, the Minneapolis production company behind a recent viral video of Bryant Lake Bowl, is documenting another Minnesota icon: the Mall of America.

The company’s latest drone video takes viewers on a flight through the Bloomington mall and its indoor theme park, Nickelodeon Universe.

Chris Grap, lead storyteller and experience designer at the Mall of America, said that the viral bowling alley clip and the evident passion behind it inspired him to work with Rally Studios.

“I’m a huge fan of Bryant Lake Bowl, and the reasoning behind Rally Studios working with them showed who they are: honest, passionate, compassionate storytellers from our community,” Grap said. “They love Minnesota; they love Mall of America. Working with them to help them achieve their vision was a privilege.”

The new video begins with footage of the “Kaleidoscope” public art installation before zooming into Nickelodeon Universe, the 7-acre theme park inside the mall. Titled “The Quack Attack is Back,” the drone video pays homage to—you guessed it—The Mighty Ducks, the classic ‘90s hockey movie shot in the Twin Cities.

The Rally Studios team aimed to highlight their nostalgia of growing up in Minnesota and frequenting Mall of America.

“Our entire team has always been huge fans of Mall of America and dreamed of setting up a drone shot there even before the Bryant Lake Bowl footage caught like it did,” said Jay Christensen, aerial cinematographer and drone pilot at Rally Studios, in a news release. “Working with the mall was a collaborative effort that brought together like-minded folks who wanted to try making the seemingly impossible possible. Grap said he hopes the collaboration brings a sense of joy and excitement to viewers. He said this won’t be the last time the teams work together.

“There are definitely more icons throughout Mall of America waiting for their time to shine,” Grap said.

Last month, Rally Studios made international headlines for its swooping footage of Bryant Lake Bowl & Theater on West Lake Street in Minneapolis. The video, called “Right Up Our Alley,” has now been viewed nearly 2 million times on YouTube alone, and even received praise from James Gunn, the director and screenwriter behind Guardians of the Galaxy and Suicide Squad.

The bowling alley clip was shot as part of a project to support iconic Minnesotan businesses hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent social unrest.

Two weeks ago, Rally Studios auctioned off the video as a non-fungible token (NFT) with the intention to donate all proceeds to the Lake Street Council, a Minneapolis nonprofit that supports local entrepreneurs and artists. The unique piece of digital artwork sold for 2 Ethereum, valued at about $4,670.

Produced by Nelvana, the 26-episode, 2D-animated series combines the struggles of tween life with the responsibility of controlling an entire dimension of monsters.

Following launch, new episodes will continue to air weekdays at 14:00 on Nickelodeon in Portugal and at 15:00h on Nickelodeon in España. The series is locally titled Ollie y los monstruos in Spain.

Ollie’s Pack follows Ollie and his backpack, which doubles as a powerful portal allowing an array of monsters to travel from the Monsterverse into Ollie’s world on Earth. Throughout the series, Ollie and his two best friends must protect the earth from the horrifying monsters that have escaped, while often utilizing the helpful monsters who assist with their everyday tween problems, like sneaking into a movie or winning their school’s Battle of the Bands contest. No matter the circumstances, Ollie’s thirst for adventure undoubtedly gets him into trouble that only he and his friends can resolve.

In the first episode, “New Kid on Campus,” Ollie takes Captain Wowski to school in the pack. CW loves it so much he poses as the new kid the next day. Then, "The Chosen One(s), a former Chosen One unexpectedly shows up. Her presence creates a rift between Ollie and his pals. The series premiere is locally titled "Chico nuevo en el colegio / Los Elegidos" in Spain.

The US-English dub of the series stars James Hartnett (Cupcake & Dino) as Ollie, an ordinary, impulsive, and creative kid who has been given the status of Chosen One and Keeper of the Pack; Ana Sani (Mysticons) as Cleo, the brave and adventurous comic relief; and David Berni (Rocket Monkeys) as Bernie, the nervy and logical voice of reason.

Along the way, audiences will be introduced to some larger than life monsters including Andre and Bev, a bounty hunting double act; Major Snooch, a high ranking official in the Ministry of Chosen One Affairs; and Rance, a weaselly petty thief in utter denial about his boldfaced stealing.

The series originated from “Monster Pack,” an original short made for Nickelodeon’s 2013 Animated Shorts Program. Creators Pedro Eboli (Cupcake & Dino) and Graham Peterson (Rick & Morty) met at the Vancouver Film School and have now been friends for over 10 years. Pedro is a creator, producer, director and animator from Rio de Janeiro, while Graham is an animation supervisor and instructor at local and overseas studios.

ViacomCBS Launches Paramount Plus in the Nordics

ViacomCBS Networks International (VCNI) Nordics today (March 25) launched their new and improved Paramount+ SVOD service in the Nordic region. The service will initially be available through local partner, such as Apple TV, Telia TV in Sweden, Norway and Finland, and Tele 2, Telenor and Allente in Sweden, with plans to release a direct-to-consumer Paramount+ app in April 2021.


Update (29/4) - ViacomCBS Networks International (VCNI) Nordics today released a standalone Paramount+ app for iOS and Android devices in the Nordic region!

With more than 6,000 episodes and films to be released throughout the year, Paramount+ will be home to iconic hits from across the ViacomCBS portfolio of brands and networks, including Nickelodeon, including the brand new SpongeBob SquarePants spin-off series Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years. Local productions available from launch include the first season of Ib the Dog, with season two, being produced exclusively for the premium streaming service in the Nordics region, set to arrive in summer 2021.

Unlike the North American version, the Nordic version of Paramount Plus won't carry The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, as Netflix has the international rights to the film.
