How 'The Twilight Zone' Influenced 'Are You Afraid of the Dark?'

Submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society… and the legacy of one Mr. Rod Serling. Nickelodeon’s Are You Afraid of the Dark? gave kids a Twilight Zone-esque anthology.

In the last half decade, D.J. MacHale has noticed a significant uptick in interest in Are You Afraid of the Dark?, the beloved Nickelodeon anthology series he co-created nearly 30 years ago. Though he spent much of his career as a television writer, director, and producer, he’s had a successful second act as an author of sci-fi, fantasy, and supernatural novels. When fans of his novels put it together that he also produced all 91 episodes of the original run of the Nickelodeon classic, he started receiving an outpour of appreciation.

“Suddenly this wave of social media came to me about Are You Afraid of the Dark?,” MacHale told Den of Geek. “There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t speak to someone in some way, shape or form about [the show].”

Are You Afraid of the Dark? premiered on Nickelodeon on Oct. 25, 1991. Each episode started with a member of “The Midnight Society,” a group of teenagers who gathered at a secret location in the woods, offering up a scary story around a campfire. The anthology tapped into a range of stories that touched on the supernatural, classic monsters like werewolves and vampires, and a nightmare inducing clown named Zeebo. The series kicked off a golden age (an upcoming documentary dubbed this successful time period the “Orange Years”) of live-action and animated shows for the network. Yet during the series’ original run from 1991 to 1996, MacHale says there was “no mechanism to get feedback” like there is now for TV showrunners who are bombarded with instant social media gratification or scorn from viewers.

“I wasn’t that kind of person who every week I’d try to get the ratings,” he says. “I was too busy making the show. Everyone seemed to like it. But I didn’t get any real feedback from viewers. I didn’t feel in the moment that this ground swell of this revolutionary thing was happening. It wasn’t until maybe the late ‘90s. It wasn’t until Nickelodeon stopped being that way, that I realized what we had back then.”

These days, interactions with fans or media attention often comes with questions about what the scariest episode is. Initially Nickelodeon rejected MacHale and co-creator Ned Kandel’s pitch out of fear that scaring kids would result in backlash from parents. It took another pitch meeting and three script proposals to convince the network that the tone of the series was not overly scary for a young audience.

“Our goal wasn’t necessarily just to be scary,” MacHale says. “Are You Afraid of the Dark? sprang more from the kind of short story spooky tradition, of which I’d put Twilight Zone in that category. I tried to come up with [different] types of stories, whether some be more dramatic, some maybe romantic, some flat out scary, some with vampires. Each season was crafted to have a whole range of stories. And that’s straight out of the Twilight Zone. They always made you think a little bit, and there’s always a little bit of a twist to it, and it was more unsettling and weird than it was flat out scary.”

MacHale notes that there was no traditional boogeyman in The Twilight Zone, though Willam Shatner might disagree. He suggests Are You Afraid of the Dark? was likely the scarier of the two shows.

“I would argue that we were scarier than Twilight Zone, because we did have those episodes where there were monsters coming at you. But that was more the guidepost for me, to be able to tell a wide range of different types of interesting stories, and that was the big Twilight Zone influence.”

MacHale’s direct homage to Rod Serling and The Twilight Zone is unmistakable. The storyteller in Are You Afraid of the Dark? begins each tale with “Submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society,” before midnight dust is tossed onto the campfire. The phrase “submitted for your approval” is closely associated with Serling and The Twilight Zone, though it was only used in the opening monologues of three episodes: “Cavender Is Coming,” “In Praise of Pip,” and “A Kind of a Stopwatch.” A 1995 American Masters documentary film on the television giant was titled Rod Serling: Submitted For Your Approval.

The Twilight Zone and Are You Afraid of the Dark? are intertwined through more than direct homage and the anthology structure. The Midnight Society itself functions as a narrative device in the vein of Rod Serling as the narrator of The Twilight Zone

“I smartly created the Midnight Society that becomes a through line through the whole thing,” MacHale says. “It’s amazing to me that The Midnight Society is as important to people as it is, because to me the Midnight Society was like Rod Serling.”

It’s been 61 years since Rod Serling first introduced viewers to The Twilight Zone. Its legacy is immeasurable. But even by the most basic metric, proof of its enduring longevity is in its revivals. After years of tussling with network executives over censorship, budgets, and advertising, Serling decided not to fight the cancellation of The Twilight Zone in 1964. Since then, the series returned as a feature film in 1983, and has been revived three times, in 1985, 2002, and most recently by Jordan Peele in 2019.

Are You Afraid of the Dark? is following in the footsteps of its forebearer. The original run ended in 1996 after five seasons, but was revived with a new Midnight Society in 1999 and ran for an additional two seasons. In recent years, Nickelodeon saw an opportunity to bring back its classics for a new generation of kids whose parents likely grew up with grand dreams of being slimed. It led to revivals for ‘90s hits All That, Rocko’s Modern Life, Double Dare, Rugrats, and an Are You Afraid of the Dark? mini-series.

The 2019 return for the horror anthology was a hit and the network decided to greenlight a second season. MacHale himself is not involved with the revival and says he was not asked to be part of it, which left some bittersweet feelings and bad blood with the network. But he did offer advice for the revival’s producers.

“One of the things I said to the producer was, ‘Be careful because you’re making a show that people who are in their 30s have great memories of, and chances are you’re not going to live up to those memories.’ And those memories are probably better than the show was, frankly. You’re not really making a show for them because they’ve moved on. You’re really making a show for the same age group that we made it for. And they did. I think they’ve just hit the right tone. I think they’ve done the show a good service. I’d be really upset if they somehow ruined it, but they didn’t, so that’s good.”

The new Are You Afraid of the Dark? is more of an anthology in the mold of Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story, a departure from MacHale’s original vision. Yet The Midnight Society has become something bigger than MacHale could have ever imagined during the early days of making the show, and clearly his creation still resonates with scores of fans around the world. And much like The Twilight Zone, the mark of a show that stands the test of time is that new storytellers continue to want to put their own spin on it.

“I did see a Twilight Zone episode the other day, and it ticked me off,” MacHale says with a laugh.  “Only because it went to a place that I wanted to go with Are You Afraid of the Dark?, and I couldn’t come up with a good story to do this. And it turns out they did it on The Twilight Zone.”

Are You Afraid of the Dark? is available on Amazon Prime Video. Season one of Nickelodeon's revived Are You Afraid of the Dark? series is available on DVD and on-demand today, with season two set to premiere in 2021 on Nickelodeon.

The Tale of Are You Afraid of the Dark?'s 18 Spookiest Secrets

Submitted for Approval: Are You Afraid of the Dark?'s 18 Spookiest Secrets

Ryan Gosling was almost a member of the Midnight Society and what the campfire's magical dust was really made of are just two of the facts we're revealing about the beloved Nickelodeon series.

Nickelodeon

Consider this meeting of the Midnight Society officially in session.

If you were a kid in the '90s then the chances are pretty high that you definitely spent at least one night with the lights on in your bedroom after tuning into an episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark?

The Canadian horror anthology series debuted on Nickelodeon in the early '90s as The Twilight Zone for kids and launched the careers of Happy Endings' Elisha Cuthbert and Sweet Magnolia's JoAnna Garcia Swisher.

The show aired seven seasons before putting out its campfire for good in 2000—until a whole new generation of Nickelodeon viewers were inducted into the Midnight Society when the network brought the cult classic back from the dead in 2019. Dark? was an immediate hit and earned a second season renewal.

But did you know the original Are You Afraid of the Dark? was this close to never seeing the light of day? Or that one of Hollywood's top leading men was almost the show's star?

Nickelodeon

Submitted for approval: The tale of the 18 spookiest secrets about Are You Afraid of the Dark?...

1. Nickelodeon initially turned down the show, telling co-creators D.J. MacHale and Ned Kandel that they "couldn't scare little kids," according to MacHale.

But after a new head of development took over a year later and looked at the Are You Afraid of the Dark? pitch, they called the duo "and asked why we weren't doing the show," MacHale told The Globe and Mail. "The idea of doing 'horror lite,' which is what Dark? is, people can't get their minds around it."

2. In an attempt to get ahead of any backlash from concerned parents, the network asked the creative team to base the tales off of classic literature.

"Nickelodeon could claim it's based on classic lit: Daphne du Maurier, Edgar Allan Poe," MacHale explained. "But never did we have any complaints along those lines. We knew what the limit was. You're not going to show blood, violence or depravity. You're going to show, 'Oh my God! What's behind that door?!' We were doing Hitchcock 101."

3. The original title of the show was Scary Tales, a play on fairy tales.

"Nickelodeon actually said, 'We like the show, but we don't like the title. We need something that's more unique, more Nickelodeon-like,'" MacHale told Vulture.

Nickelodeon

4. Some of the members of the Midnight Society who would go on to find success in Hollywood include Elisha Cuthbert and Joanna Garcia Swisher.

Cuthbert initially made a small appearance in a 1995 episode before becoming a member, playing a completely different character named Megan, in 1999.

5. Ross Hull, who played Gary, the original leader of the Midnight Society.

The actor ultimately left the acting world behind and became multi-market meteorologist for Global News in Canada. However, this came full circle when he visited the set of Nickelodeon's revived Are You Afraid of the Dark? series in 2019, interviewing the new Midnight Society.

"People were really shocked the first time they saw me do the weather in Canada," he told the Daily Dot. "I always had a passion for broadcasting; I'd bug my family doing fake newscasts as a kid. It became this second career for me."

6. Hull also hosts his own YouTube channel called The Tale of the Guy From That Show.

On the channel, Hull shares stories from his acting career and interviews some of his former co-stars.

7. While they appeared in every episode, the actors who were part of the main cast didn't see each other all that much.

"It was interesting for me and everyone in the Midnight Society because we would shoot all of our scenes back to back in two weeks, and then we wouldn't do it again until the following year," Cuthbert told The Globe and Mail. "It was like an actors' camp for kids."

Nickelodeon

8. Hey girl, before Ryan Gosling was, you know, Ryan Gosling, he appeared in a season five episode "The Tale of Station 109.1", playing a young boy trying to save his brother from getting dragged to hell. But he was actually offered a full-time role as a member of the Midnight Society years before his 1995 appearance.

"We originally wanted Ryan Gosling to be in the Midnight Society," MacHale revealed to Vulture, "but he went onto The [All New] Mickey Mouse Club instead."

However, his appearance on Are You Afraid of the Dark? marked his first TV appearance.

9. Revenge star Emily VanCamp made her acting debut in the final season's premiere "The Tale of the Silver Slight."

10. Other stars who made appearances include Neve Campbell, Hayden Christensen and Jay Baruchel.

Nickelodeon

11. Sorry to shatter the illusion of the campfire but Daniel DeSanto, who played Tucker, Gary's younger brother, revealed what created the signature magical dust.

"It's just a bag of CoffeeMate and glitter," he spilled to The Globe and Mail. "The fire was a pyrotechnic trick. But then my disappointment turned into horror when I saw the props manager who flipped the switch for the fire. He was so creepy and he would talk to himself."

DeSanto can still be found on Nickelodeon, voicing Daring Danny X on PAW Patrol.

12. Speaking of the campfire, only one episode actually featured an actor striking a match to light it.

"[Nickelodeon] didn't want to teach kids how to strike matches," MacHale told Splitsider. "They were afraid someone would burn their house down or something like that. So the campfire was always already lit when [the Midnight Society] showed up. There was one episode where someone did light a match when it slipped by Standards and Practices in an episode I directed."

Nickelodeon

13. One young star had his first alcoholic drink during his time on the show.

"Daniel lost his drinking virginity at a bar in Montreal while JoAnna Garcia and I looked on," Hull revealed in a YouTube video with DeSanto.

With a laugh, DeSanto added, "I had my first beer in Montreal, mom and dad, with the guy you were so happy was there watching me!"

14. Many of the episodes were filmed in an arboretum, which was infested with mosquitoes.

"The entire crew had to wear protective suits with netting over their faces to keep away the hungry bugs," MacHale told Buzzfeed. "Many, many takes had to be dumped because a mosquito would land on an actor's cheek or nose and get swatted."

Nickelodeon

15. In the original pilot, Hull played Frank. But when Dark? was picked up to series, the network wanted to recast everyone except for Hull, who was given the lead role of Gary.

Jason Alisharan was then cast as Frank.

16. There's only one episode in which the fire wasn't put out at the end: Season five's "The Tale of the Night Shift," which was originally intended to be the final episode.

"The last shot of the tale was a hospital room door closing with the number 65 on it, because it was the 65th episode," MacHale explained to Buzzfeed. "In that same shot if you listen closely you can hear the Dark? theme coming from the hospital room."

Nickelodeon

17. Each season, MacHale would travel to different cities looking for new actors to join the Midnight Society.

And one casting trip to Vancouver resulted in the showrunner getting Chickenpox after seeing thousands of kids, forcing him to quarantine for ten days while preparing to direct an episode.

18. "We paid homage to Twilight Zone in every episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark?" MacHale confirmed to Vulture. "Rod Serling [in Twilight Zone] would always say, 'Submitted for your approval…' So, I had the Midnight Society, when they would reach into that bag of midnight dust, say, ‘Submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society…'"

Are You Afraid of the Dark? is available on Amazon Prime Video. Season one of Nickelodeon's revived Are You Afraid of the Dark? series is available on DVD and on-demand today, with season two set to premiere in 2021 on Nickelodeon.

First 'Power Rangers Dino Fury' Villains Revealed

Hasbro today has unveiled some of the villains of Power Rangers Dino Fury, the upcoming 28th season of the iconic Power Rangers franchise during their Fan First Friday stream!

65 million years ago an ancient force brought the power of the Morphin Grid to planet Earth. Now, the forces of evil have come to claim that power, and a group of heroes must rise up to meet this challenge. Harnessing the energy of the Morphin Grid with the prehistoric power of Dino Fury, they will unlock incredible new Morphers, Dino Powered Weapons, powerful new Zords, and astonishing new Megazords. In the tradition of dinosaur teams of the past comes a brand new entry, Power Rangers Dino Fury.

Among those battling the Dino Fury rangers will be a villainess “Boomtower” - which some fans might recognize as Tankjoh from Kishiryu Sentai RyuSoulger - and two monsters of the day, “Doomsnake” and "Shockhorn".

In additional news, it was revealed that, at least for the Power Rangers Dino Fury toys, the Blue Dino Fury ranger, Ollie (portrayed by Kainalu (Kai) Moya) will have two sai’s, and the Pink Ranger (Amelia, portrayed by Hunter Deno) will have a mace.

Hasbro revealed a plethora of new details for the upcoming Power Rangers Dino Fury toy line! Power Rangers toy design lead John Warden and fellow designer Jordan joined the stream to reveal the first Dino Fury toys:

* Leading off was the Basic assortment of standard Power Rangers action figures- specifically Dino Fury Red, Dino Fury Blue & Dino Fury Pink alongside BoomTower;

*Next up was the Dino Fury Morpher! This wrist-mounted device uses special Power Keys to unlock new abilities for the Dino Fury Rangers. Each Basic figure includes a Power Key.

*A sub-line called Basic Attackers was also revealed; this category features a Dino Fury Ranger figure with special attack features packaged with a Monster.

*The Dino Fury Zords are still in prototype phase but we were given a quick look at the T-Rex Champion Zord and the four core Zords for this series.

Last but certainly not least, we got to meet the rest of the Dino Fury Rangers!

*Chance Perez will play Javier the Dino Fury Black Ranger.

*Tessa Rao will portray Izzy, the Dino Fury Green Ranger - a genderswap from the Super Sentai counterpart.

Power Rangers Dino Fury is scheduled to hit Nickelodeon TV and toy shelves in 2021.

Halloween-maratonra készül a Nickelodeon

Hazánkban is évről évre egyre nagyobb népszerűségnek örvend a gyermekek körében az ősi kelta hagyományokból kialakult autentikus ír ünnep, a Halloween. A Nickelodeon is izgalommal várja október 31-ét, amelynek alkalmából egy kis borzongással, de sok-sok humorral és kedvességgel fűszerezve a legnépszerűbb sorozataiból összeválogatott tematikus maratonnal szórakoztatja kis nézőit.

Kiderül, hogy sikerül-e ismét legyőznie a gonoszokat a folyton galibákba keveredő szuperhős családnak, Thundermanéknek, de azt is megtudhatjuk, hogy milyen őrülten izgalmas kalandba keveredik az Egy csipetnyi bűvölet három főszereplő kislánya, akik a varázslás segítségével leplezik le kisvárosuk titkait. Lesz a Kagyló sétányon töklámpással bulizó SpongyaBob Kockanadrág, jön a kilencéves Annie és aranyos pónilova (Itt van Póni), de érkezik A Lármás család, illetve a sorozat spin off-ja, A Casagrande család is. A borzongás tetőfokán pedig a nemrégiben debütált Félsz a sötétben? című sorozat, méghozzá az utolsó epizód országos premierjével zárja a Halloween-maratont a Nickelodeon képernyőjén.

A Halloween-maraton programja:

12:10 SpongyaBob Kockanadrág – Szellemes meglepetés

12:40 SpongyaBob Kockanadrág – Bikini fenék legendája

13:00 A Thunderman család – Happy Halloween

13:30 Egy csipetnyi bűvölet – Kísértő Halloween

13:55 A Casagrande család – A halloween dilemma

14:10 A Lármás család – IV / 10. rész

14:35 Félsz a sötétben? – I / 1. rész

15:20 Félsz a sötétben? – I / 2. rész
