Netflix Trolls 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Fans with 'Confirmation' That Sokka & Toph Had a Kid

Netflix wades into ship wars with Avatar: The Last Airbender fans by insinuating that Sokka and Toph had a child after the series ended.

Netflix trolls Avatar: The Last Airbender fans by suggesting Sokka and Toph had a child when they were older. Avatar might've gone off the air back in 2008, but it has recently seen a resurgence in popularity thanks to its arrival on Netflix. Fans new and old have enjoyed streaming the critically-acclaimed Nickelodeon series, and its sequel show, The Legend of Korra, is set to arrive next month. In the world of Avatar, four nations, each represented by one of the four core elements, are at war, and young Avatar Aang is the only one who can bring peace.

The Legend of Korra is able to continue the stories of Team Avatar, though most of them are either old or deceased by the time the show begins. However, the children of Avatar's characters play pivotal roles in The Legend of Korra, including Toph's daughter Suyin. Toph actually has two children in the years after Avatar, but Suyin often inspires more questions from fans for one reason: No one knows who her father is. His identity is never explained in canon, which leaves things up to the interpretation of fans.

If one were to ask Netflix who Suyin's father is, they would apparently say Sokka. Over on Twitter, Netflix waded into Avatar's "ship" wars by declaring they like the idea of Toph and Sokka as a couple (but only as adults). To support this, Netflix referenced Suyin and how no one actually knows who her dad is, insinuating that it could be Sokka. They did follow up with mentioning, "its unconfirmed but still."

As with any fan base, couples are a hot topic among Avatar fans. Most frequently, fans tend to be opinionated about whether Katara should've ended up with Aang (as she does in the show) or Zuko. At the same time, there are several other popular couples, and there are fans who have seen Sokka and Toph's interactions on Avatar as proof they would make a good couple. Plus, Toph herself had a crush on Sokka. However, no romantic relationship between the two has been confirmed in canon. Toph doesn't have any confirmed love interests besides Kanto, the father of her other daughter Lin. Meanwhile, Sokka ends Avatar happily dating the Kyoshi Warrior Suki.

Netflix's comments, as humorous as they are, will no doubt cause a stir among fans who have their own opinions about Avatar's relationships. Until the identity of Suyin's father actually is confirmed (if it ever will be), fans will likely always debate it. One could definitely make the argument that Sokka is this mysterious parent, though others might not love the idea of him being romantically involved with Toph. In this case, it's all a matter of what fans want to imagine.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is now available to stream on CBS All Access and Netflix (in HD).

The Legend of Korra is currently available on CBS All Access, and will arrive on Netflix on August 14.

The story of Toph is set to be expanded in Avatar: The Last Airbender – Toph Beifong's Metalbending Academy, a new graphic novel from Dark Horse Books that is slated to be released on Tuesday, February 16, 2021.

A live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender is in development at Netflix.
