BURBANK, Calif.—July 7, 2020—Nickelodeon has struck a multiplatform deal with James Corden and Ben Winston, and their production company Fulwell 73, to produce an animated movie and TV series, based on the recently released children’s book title, Real Pigeons Fight Crime. The movie and TV series are being developed to air on all Nickelodeon platforms.

Written by Andrew McDonald and illustrated by Ben Wood, Real Pigeons Fight Crime was published in Australia by Hardie Grant Children’s Publishing and is now available in over 10 territories including North America, where it was recently released by Random House Children’s Books. Hilarious, engaging and completely ridiculous, the Real Pigeons series has sold hundreds of thousands of books and has amassed legions of fans around the globe. Real Pigeons Fight Crime reveals the secret life of crime-busting pigeons who set out to keep a town safe. The deal underscores key elements of Nickelodeon’s content strategy, to build and expand the worlds of popular franchises and give audiences more of what they love.

The forthcoming Real Pigeons Fight Crime animated project is the latest addition to Nickelodeon’s programming, joining the recently greenlit Big Nate series as well as hit franchises like Star Trek, SpongeBob SquarePants, and Henry Danger, among others. Nickelodeon’s new content slate is informed by the network’s ongoing research and insights into today's generation of kids, who are the most diverse generation ever and expect to see themselves authentically represented in media and in the world around them; who want to make a positive difference in the world as they grow up; who consider social media stars as their top role models, alongside their parents; and who increasingly meet their much-desired need for family time by co-viewing entertainment content together.

The Real Pigeons Fight Crime TV series is executive produced by Corden and Winston, with Andrew McDonald and Ben Wood serving as consultants throughout development and production.

Andrew McDonald is a children’s author who lives in Melbourne, Australia. He is the author of the Real Pigeons series and loves writing stories that make kids laugh, gasp, think and wonder. His books have been shortlisted for the Readings Children’s Book Prize and the Australian Book Industry Awards.

Ben Wood is the illustrator of the Real Pigeons series and has always been drawn to stories with humor and heart. He has illustrated over 30 books for children, with several titles recognized on the Children Book Council of Australia (CBCA)’s “Notables” lists and was shortlisted for the Australian Book Industry Awards in 2019 and 2020.

The deal has come as a shock to the modest Australians.

“My philosophy is that I make books, and I’m really excited that they think that they think that they can turn the story and the characters into something that will appeal to a TV and film audience,” McDonald told Guardian Australia.

The novels follow a secret band of crime-fighting pigeons, Rock Pigeon, Tumbler, Frillback and Homey, who save unsuspecting humans – and other animals such as the endangered kakapo – from all kinds of trouble.

The stories had their genesis when McDonald started paying closer attention to the ubiquitous urban birds on his walks.

“I started wondering about pigeons and what’s going on in their little brains, and I thought, wouldn’t they be the ultimate crime-fighting outfit or surveillance network? Because they are everywhere, they see everything,” he says.

Soon he was falling down a research rabbit hole, uncovering all kinds of interesting morsels about the different types of pigeon and their distinctive traits, such as the common rock dove, the frillback pigeon “that looks like a wedding cake bird” and tumbler pigeons, which can somersault mid-flight.

“I learned that pigeons can fly faster than cheetahs can run,” he says. “I learned that their eyes are better than human eyes. They’re obviously a superbird.”

His publisher, Hardie Grant Egmont, paired him up with Wood, the illustrator.

The partnership is “organic” and truly collaborative, Wood says. “Illustrators don’t always have that kind of relationship with authors.”

The books are an unconventional mash-up of visual and literary storytelling styles, with pages resembling anything from comic strips, to chapter books to a cinematic shot from a film.

Wood says he always imagined the characters as animations when designing them, giving the artwork a dynamism that naturally lends itself to film adaptation.

“I never went into it as a 2D world, it was always an animated world in my head,” he says. “Even the way I compose the images, I tend to think, ‘Where’s the camera?’ I want them to be immersive.”

McDonald and Wood say they have fans across the primary school age bracket, partly due to the books’ distinctive visual style.

“When a kid opens up a Real Pigeons book we give them two things,” McDonald says. “We say, we’re gonna have fun and solve a mystery together and it’s going to be a bit like a game, and it’s going to be really silly. We definitely lean into the silliness.”

There are five books so far in the series, published by Hardie Grant Egmont, beginning with Real Pigeons Fight Crime.

The series has been a solid seller for the publisher: since its release in 2018, Real Pigeons Fight Crime has sold 28,452 copies in Australia alone, and it has been available in New Zealand, the US, Canada and some European territories since late last year.

A start date for production and voice cast are yet to be determined.

ViacomCBS Launches Noggin and Paramount+ on TotalPlay in México

ViacomCBS Networks Américas today announced that they have reached an agreement to launch the company's top-rated subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) services Noggin and Paramount+ on TotalPlay in México!


For a additional monthly fee of 79.00 Mexican pesos (USD $3.50), TotalPlay subscribers will have access to Paramount+'s large library of content, including international series such as The Handmaid's Tale, Killing Eve and Yellowstone. The OTT service features 2,000 episodes of multiple titles and genres from ViacomCBS brands Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central and Paramount Channel. Other series available include Acapulco Shore (seven seasons), Jersey Shore, Catfish, Latin American stand-up comedy, as well as localised versions of Are You The One? and Just Tattoo Of Us from Latin America, Brazil and the UK.

For kids and families, Paramount+ offers episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Hey Arnold!, The Fairly OddParents, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Big Time Rush, The Thundermans, iCarly, NooBees, Yo Soy Franky and Every Witch Way, among others.

For its part, for an additional monthly fee of 49 Mexican pesos (USD $2.15), Nick Jr.'s interactive learning service, Noggin, will offer a library of premium content for preschool-age children that includes Paw Patrol, Nella the Princess Knight, Blaze and the Monster Machines, Dora the Explorer and Canticos.

TotalPlay is also offering both services in a bundle of 109 Mexican pesos (USD $4.80) a month.

Both services launched on TotalPlay today (Tuesday 7th July 2020).

The BeatBuds, Scooter Braun's kid-pop sensation duo Jonathan Jonah and Matthew Shapiro, will stage a live BeatBuds performance as a 360° interactive experience with the first-ever virtual BeatBASH.

Together, The BeatBuds and their audience will explore a 360° immersive and interactive tropical island featuring an abundance of digital touchpoints, virtual instruments for kids to play, trivia games, and, of course, plenty of rockin' BeatBuds songs and sing-along action.

Families and friends will even be able to see each other singing, dancing, and interacting. A highlight of this special BeatBuds show will be the world premiere of a new single, "I Have a Voice." The BeatBuds want to empower and excite young children, alongside their families, regarding the importance of voting as the most effective way to be heard and make a change.

The BeatBuds look forward to starring in their own animated preschool series on Nickelodeon, with production set to begin this summer and a 2021 premiere planned.

SpongeBob, Patrick & the PAW Patrol Return to Movie Park Germany During Summer 2020

It's been a tough few months due to the on-going global COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, however, Movie Park Germany has got a treat in store for Nickelodeon fans of all ages this summer - the chance to meet and greet SpongeBob SquarePants, Patrick Star and the pups from PAW Patrol! The Nickelodeon superstars will return to the German film and TV show-themed amusement park, home to Nickland, one of the largest NICK theme worlds worldwide, from Monday 29th June 2020.


To make sure that all guests can enjoy a safe and carefree experience in the park, the park will be operating special social distancing measures, with visitors being asked to maintain a minimum distance of 1.5 metres during Meet & Greets and their appearances throughout the park.

The news follows Movie Park Germany opening the "Skye’s High Flyer" PAW Patrol-themed attraction in the Adventure Bay area of the park earlier this spring.

MOVIE PARK GERMANY BRING BACK WALKING CHARACTERS OF PAW PATROL, SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS, AND PATRICK STAR

The popular Nickelodeon TV heroes from PAW Patrol, SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star are back at Movie Park Germany. As of June 29, visitors have had the chance to meet the popular characters at the family theme park.

Guests can immerse themselves in the world of movies, meeting and greeting the well-known TV heroes, while maintaining 1.5-metre social distancing.

Thorsten Backhaus, managing director of Movie Park Germany, commented on the return of the meet and greet feature at the site: “We are happy to welcome the well-known characters back in time for the summer holidays. Especially for many families with children, the popular series heroes are always a visiting highlight.

Funko Unveils TMNT & Invader ZIM SDCC 2020 Exclusives

COWABUNGA! Funko has announced that, as part of Funko Virtual Con 3.0, the company will be releasing brand new SDCC exclusive vinyl figures inspired by the iconic Nickelodeon properties, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Invader ZIM!


There may be no physical Comic-Con International: San Diego event to bring fans together this year, but in an effort to keep the convention spirit alive, Funko will be bringing you San Diego Comic Con® virtually with Funko's third virtual con! Funko Virtual Con 3.0 will take place July 19th - July 25th. The week will be filled with activations, special guests, and more.

Among the SDCC 2020 exclusives unveiled by Funko are vinyl figures inspired by two iconic characters from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Invader ZIM!

For the first reveal, it is surfs up as Michelangelo from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has arrived. This is a very well done SDCC exclusive that features the iconic Party Dude turtle in some pepperoni pizza swim trunks. He is holding a surfboard that says his catchphrase "Cowabunga" and has the San Diego Comic Con logo at the bottom. This radical Funko Pop will be a must have collectible for any TMNT fan and will surely be on many fans' hunting lists. The Mikey figure will be available to purchase on the Funko Shop.


Joining Mikey is another fan favorite character: Invader Zim! Based on his Netflix cartoon event Enter the Florpus, Zim is holding onto Minimoose. This was a character that was never explained in the original series as it was canceled and put out of order. While Enter the Florpus gave us some clues, this Pop will be a must have for any Invader Zim fans. The Invader ZIM figure will be available to buy at Entertainment Earth.


With SDCC canceled and shuffled to a @Home event, this will most likely lead to all SDCC 2020 Pop exclusives going to their FunkoShop. Of course, there will also be retailer exclusives so stay tuned here to find out where these exclusives will be heading.

Orange TV Adds Nickelodeon Channels to Family Package in France

VIACOMCBS NETWORKS INTERNATIONAL AND ORANGE EXPAND PARTNERSHIP IN FRANCE

ViacomCBS offers the entire brand portfolio on ORANGE TV networks with newly added Nickelodeon, MTV and J-ONE


Milan, 6 July, 2020 – ViacomCBS Networks International announces new distribution deal with ORANGE in France to offer more content, across more genres, for the entire family. ORANGE TV subscribers in France will now have access to previously exclusive content from iconic brands Nickelodeon, J-ONE and MTV.

As a result of this deal, the entire brand portfolio of ViacomCBS Networks France is now available on ORANGE TV platforms in France (linear and on-demand), which includes BET, COMEDY CENTRAL, PARAMOUNT CHANNEL, GAME ONE, GAME ONE+1, NICKELODEON JUNIOR, NICKELODEON NICKELODEON+1, NICKELODEON TEEN, MTV, MTV HITS and J-ONE.

ORANGE TV subscribers will now be able to watch popular kids content such as PAW Patrol, Shimmer and Shine, The Loud House and Victorious from NICKELODEON brands (Nick Jr, Nickelodeon, Teen Nick). Moreover, top music content, including iconic events like MTV EMAs and the MTV Video Music Awards as well as reality based programs like Geordie Shore and Catfish from MTV and MTV HITS channels will be added to the content offer. In addition, the manga pop culture channel J-ONE also joins the ViacomCBS library, giving Japanese animation fans access to content right after the first broadcast in Japan. This includes Detective Conan, Radiant and One Piece and Boruto: Naruto Next generations.
