Update (11/27) - From Calabasas High School via the Los Angeles Times' HS Insider:

‘Cousins For Life’ offers messages of individualism, family love and total chaos

Cast of "Cousins for Life" (Credit: Nickelodeon Animation Studios)

ickelodeon is bringing a new cast of cousins to the table with the new series Cousins for Life. Actors Scarlet Spencer (Ivy), Ron G. (Lewis), Ishmel Sahid (Clark), Dallas Young (Stuart) and Micah Abbey (Leaf) bring an unorthodox and interesting dynamic to the greater Nickelodeon family with crazy schemes and the tales of the love and bond shared by family.

Viewers can expect the message “love your family no matter what happens with them,” Young said.

“Just love them because one day you might need them and that’s what happened to us. We need each other every single day even though we have rough times,” he said.

The cast is able to relate to the story; from messages surrounding the importance of appreciating one’s family to the unique bonds each character shares and has to overcome. While the show’s actors are different themselves, much like their characters are to each other, they admit that their differences are what make them a great team.

While Abbey spends his time on the basketball court and Spencer spends her moments off-camera practicing her singing voice, Sahid spends his time… not singing. The “Cousins for Life” cast, each incredibly unique, is able to bond like cousins and siblings, exhibiting exactly what the show is all about.

“Even if you are different from some of your other family members, that’s what makes it great,” Spencer said. “If all of us were the same, I don’t think we would be as strong of a cast as we are.”

Scarlet Spencer stars as Ivy, a confident, socially active girl living in Portland

Did you meet your co-star Dallas Dupree Young when you were both on Shameless?

No, we worked on the same season of Shameless but different episodes. We met the first time at the audition when we were doing a chemistry read.

You play Ivy on ‘Cousins for Life’ what is your favorite thing about your character?

My favorite thing about playing Ivy is that she looks at the positive side of everything and she always
wants to save the world. I’m a pretty positive person but I wish I was more like her sometimes. I also
love her wardrobe! She has the best collection of jackets!

If someone was to play you in a movie what would they love about portraying you?

I love Broadway musicals and break out into song frequently, I am incredibly awkward in social
situations where I don’t know people and I think an actor would have way too much fun playing the
awkward girl singing, as she walks around.

How do you balance school and remembering all your lines?

We have the greatest set teachers and I feel like I’m getting the best education I’ve ever had! We’re in school a minimum of 3 hours a day and if we’re not in as many scenes one week we do extra schooling and “bank” those hours for a later date. We memorize lines by lots of repetition. We get the script for the new episodes on Friday once we’ re done shooting, and then we have the weekend to go over it few times. On Monday we start by all sitting down together and reading through it, and then we keep going over it on set and block it with the director several more times through the week.

But even after all of that we all have trouble remembering all of our lines. You should see the blooper reel!

What made you want to be a part of this sitcom?

At the same time I was auditioning for ‘Cousins For Life’, I was a recurring character on another show but this meant I could be the lead of the a show! I really liked Ivy and I thought it would be a lot of fun to be a part of Nickelodeon. I’m really young to be offered an opportunity like this and I couldn’t not take it!

Once I started seeing more scripts and got to know all of the characters better I knew I made the right choice. Cousins For Life is a lot of fun but it also talks about doing the right thing and the importance of family first.

Who is your favorite family member and why?

Arthur, because he is so cute and one cool pig!

A Los Angeles native, Spencer developed a passion for acting at a young age. After beginning her career in theater productions, Scarlet then booked guest roles on Awkward (MTV), Teachers (TV Land), Colony (USA Network), Black-ish (ABC) and Shameless (Showtime). Last year, Spencer was seen playing the daughter of Will Smith’s character in the movie Bright (Netflix).

Nickelodeon’s ‘Cousins for Life’ Q&A (Part 2) with Dallas Dupree Young

Dallas Dupree Young stars as Stuart, a boy who moves to Portland to live with his uncle and cousins. After the move, he finds himself embarking on a variety of adventures with his cousin, Ivy. Cousins For Life airs on Nickelodeon beginning January 5th at 8:30 PM ET/PT.

Pilot "Cousins for Life"--Pictured: Stuart (Dallas Dupree Young) in COUSINS FOR LIFE on Nickelodeon. Photo Credit: Bonnie Osborne/Nickelodeon. ©2017 Viacom, International, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

What made you want to get into acting?

Actually, acting just fell into my lap. I always thought I would become a baseball player like my dad and m brother, but my parents received a phone call inviting me to attend an acting showcase in Los Angeles. I had a great time and from that experience, I met my manager. She introduced me to my agent and I began to book jobs right away. I discovered a whole new world and acting became my passion.

How did you land your first role?

My first role was in a series called Murder Among Friends. I was so nervous about being new to the business, especially since the audition scene required me to react to finding someone who had just died. But, my manager coached me and filmed me on her front lawn along with her dog Marley, which was part of the scene. It made me so comfortable that I was able to bring real feelings to the scene. And, the next day, I received a phone call letting me know that I had booked the job! I was so excited, you could have heard my screams from miles away! So that role was the beginning of my journey.

What’s it like being on ‘Cousins For Life’?

Being on Cousins For Life has been the best experience of my life. The show gives me a chance to work with amazing creators, Kevin Kopelow and Heath Seifert, and really cool castmates. Being on the show also allows me to be a positive role model to younger viewers, and hopefully, they can learn from my example that anything is possible with hard work. While working on the show, the whole production became one big family. I really enjoyed working in such a fun and professional environment with so many wonderful people.

What did you do to celebrate the wrap of season 1?

To celebrate, the cast and crew went to a popular bowling alley in Hollywood. In addition to bowling, there was a lot of good food as well as other fun games for us to play all night long. The best part came at the end when we got to see a blooper reel from season 1. Believe me, there were many bloopers and we all had a good laugh!

Tell me about your character Stuart and how you made him your own from the script and in front of the camera?

My character Stuart is an entrepreneur who is very creative, impulsive and at times finds himself in sticky situations. I made the character my own, by learning the script and preparing each day. After learning the script, I was able to put my personality as well my expressions into it. Because I could personally relate to Stuart, it allowed me to put more energy into the role.

Hailing from Houston, Young found his passion for acting when he was just nine years old. Since then, Dallas has booked recurring guest star roles in Shameless (Showtime), The Good Place (NBC), The Mayor (ABC) and The Fosters (Freeform). He is also the son of Atlanta Braves first base coach and former LA Dodger Eric Young, as well as brother to former Anaheim Angels outfielder, Eric Young, Jr.

Cousins for Life is Nickelodeon’s new live-action comedy show. The show features two cousins, Ivy and Stuart, who end up living under one roof and have to learn to live together with both of their families.

Dallas Dupree Young stars in the show as Stuart. CelebMix chatted to Dallas to find out more about the show.

Can you please tell our readers a little bit about yourself?

I love video games, baseball, football, basketball and reading

When did you first realize that you wanted to be an actor?

Acting just fell into my lap. I was playing with my cousins and got an anonymous phone call inviting me to a casting call in LA. From that I got a manager and agent and discovered my passion for acting.

Can you tell us a little bit about Cousins for Life for those who haven’t yet heard of the show?

Cousins for Life is about two cousins who are from very different backgrounds. They learn to navigate life under one roof with their family and they go on chaotic adventures together.

How would you describe your character Stuart in Cousins for Life?

Stuart is an entrepreneur who’s very creative, impulsive and outgoing.

Are there any similarities between you and Stuart?

Me and Stuart both love playing video games and being with our families.

What messages do you hope viewers will take from the show?

I hope they learn to love their family no matter what. Even if they don’t always get along, just love your family because you might need them at one point in time.

Are there any funny stories you can tell us about from during the filming of the show?

During the pilot we were filming with an alpaca and he peed on the rug, it was really funny, and then there were so many animals in one of the scenes, I tried to pick one of them up and it hit me and run away!

Photo by: Scott Everett White/Nickelodeon ©2018 Viacom, International, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

It sounds like the animals caused a lot of chaos! How was it filming with so many animals?

It was fun, most of them did listen. There was a pug who wouldn’t sit quite how it was needed to but besides that it was awesome as I love animals.

Do you have any favourite moments from filming?

I can’t tell you any spoilers, but I can say in one episode there’s a fake fight sequence with Stuart and Ivy and I can’t wait for people to see it as it was awesome, it has to be my favourite episode .

In the show Ivy and Stuart go on a variety of adventures together. If you personally could go on any adventure what would it be?

I’d love to be with a heard of dinosaurs and ride on a T-Rex’s back.

Photo by: Scott Everett White/Nickelodeon ©2018 Viacom, International, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Who would your dream co-star be and why?

I would love to collaborate with Lebron James the NBA player. I think he’s one of the best and I would love to make a movie with him as I think he’s a real cool guy and he’s really tall so great to play basketball with in-between scenes.

Where do you hope acting will take you in the future? Is there any particular roles you’d like to get?

I’d love to do a movie with Denzel Washington or Will Smith where I’m their child and go on adventures with them just like I do in Cousins for Life.

What advice would you give someone who wants to be an actor/actress?

Always work hard on your dream and make sure that this is your passion. Don’t let anyone else tell you can’t do this as you can always do it if you try and believe.

We’re at the start of 2019, do you have any goals for the new year?

To always prepare with my scripts, keep practicing and enjoy acting even more.

Cousins for Life premiers on January 5th at 8:30 ET/PT

Exclusive Interview: Scarlet Spencer

Cousins for Life is Nickelodeon’s new live-action comedy show. The show features two cousins, Ivy and Stuart, who end up living under one roof and have to learn to live together with both of their families.

Scarlet Spencer plays Ivy in the show, who’s a “Confident socially active girl.” CelebMix chatted to Scarlet ahead of the show’s premier.

Can you please tell our readers a little bit about yourself?

I’m incredibly awkward and I like to break out into song sometimes.

When did you first realize that you wanted to be an actress?

My friend started doing acting and begged my mum to start as well. At first, she kept saying no but I finally convinced her and that’s how it started.

How would you describe Cousins for Life to someone who hadn’t heard of it?

Cousins for Life is crazy and insane. It’s about two cousins who are living together and are totally different and the two dads are total opposites, but they find a way to live with each other and they realise family is very important.

Photo: Mathieu Young/Nickelodeon. © 2018 Viacom International, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Are there any similarities between you and Ivy?

We’re both a little bit hard headed, me maybe a bit more than her. We’re both trying to make the world a better place just in different ways, she’s maybe a bit better at it than me. I want to be more like Ivy helping the world.

What messages do you hope viewers will take from the show?

From Ivy you can learn to really stay positive and to always look at the bright side. From the entire show, you can see how important family really is.

Across all the filming for the show can you think of a stand out favourite moment?

One of my favourite moments happened in an episode I can’t currently tell you about it’ll be a surprise, but I got to live out one of my life long dreams.

Were there any funny moments that happened during the filming process?

Ron G who plays my dad in the show is a comedian and was always telling jokes and there was one I found hilarious. I was laughing so hard I snorted and now it’s his goal to have me snort it every single interview, thank goodness he’s not here right now!

Photo by: Scott Everett White/Nickelodeon ©2018 Viacom, International, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

In the show, Ivy and Stuart go on a variety of adventures together. If you personally could go on any adventure what would it be?

It would have to be swimming in slime, that would be a great adventure.

I’ve seen in other interviews that you like to sing, is music something you’d like to pursue further in the future?

Absolutely. I love to sing, and I hope I can go further with singing in my career. I really like to sing songs from Broadway, but I hope I can get into different varieties of music. I would love to be on Broadway through, I really want to be in Lion King or Wicked.

Who do you look up for inspiration and why?

Riele – she’s a good role model and as she’s on the same channel as me. She’s really good to look up to and see the things she’s done so I can follow in her footsteps. In terms of music I look up to Idina Menzel, she was the original Elphaba in Wicked. She has an amazing voice and has had an incredible career, I would love to be able to do the same.

What advice would you give to anyone who wants to become an actress/actor?

Keep trying. Out of every 100 auditions you’re maybe only going to get 1 and it’s not because they don’t like you, it’s because they just want something different. You could even have been the best person in the room, but they want someone who looks completely different so don’t let it stop you.

What projects would you like to work on in the future?

I would really like to one day host the Kids’ Choice Awards, that would be really cool. I’d also like to work with Dwayne Johnson and everyone from Nickelodeon.

Are there any future projects fans can look forward to?

Cousins for Life just ended filming and I’m just starting to audition again so there’s nothing I can share just yet

Is there anything else you would like to share about Cousins for Life?

I think it would be a good show for the entire family to watch, even the adults. I think there’s something everyone could relate to as in the show we’re all so different.

Cousins for Life premiers on January 5th at 8:30 ET/PT

Pilot "Cousins for Life"--Pictured: Clark (Ishmel Sahid) and MILLIE (Emma Shannon) in COUSINS FOR LIFE on Nickelodeon. Photo Credit: Bonnie Osborne/Nickelodeon. ©2017 Viacom, International, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Ishmel Sahid has appeared on The Mindy Project (Hulu), Maron (IFC), Drunk History (Comedy Central), and has recurred on Kingdom (Audience). Along with acting, Sahid has participated as a writer in the 2015 CBS Diversity Showcase, and is in the process of developing a half hour sketch pilot for FX, with his sketch group White Women.

On January 5th at 8:30 PM ET/PT you can watch him play Clark, a fun-loving dad who decides to do what is best, and move his family to Portland after his wife is deployed overseas. While getting used to living with three children, Clark has to re-learn what it is like to live in the same house as his tense brother, Lewis.

What will grown-ups love about a show mainly geared towards kids?

I think grown-ups will love the family dynamic between the characters on the show. Although geared towards kids, there’s an underlying theme of “family first” which I think most adults can relate to when watching with their children. Not to mention the show is hilarious, so they’ll appreciate that as well.

Do you get to keep anything from the clothes from the show?

Don’t say anything, but I kept a few of my characters colorful shirts. But that’s between us… don’t tell the wardrobe department!

Did you get to help write or give ideas with any of the episodes?

I didn’t get to write any episodes but it would definitely be an honor to in the future. Our show has a group of amazing, funny and diverse writers who know our voices, individual talents, and quirks as actors and tailor our specific attributes to our characters on the show when writing each episode. The writers are very supportive on taking pitches we might have on jokes, and they give us plenty of room to improv on set. But in terms of full episodes, our show creators Kevin Kopelow and Heath Seifert have the majority of episode ideas lined up well in advance.

What is your acting resume background?

I’ve been on many TV shows such as The Mindy Project, New Girl, and various Comedy Central specials to name a few, but my background is in improv. I studied comedy writing and improv at The Upright Citizens Brigade, also known as UCB for five years. I also perform a monthly show in Los Angeles called ‘Your Token Friend’ with my all black male group called ‘White Women’. You can see us on the second Friday of every month at UCB (University of California Berkeley).

Before this show, what was your favorite show on Nickelodeon?

I had a lot of favorite shows on Nickelodeon before this one. But my top five, in no particular order, would be The Adventures of Pete & Pete, Doug, Invader Zim, Legends of the Hidden Temple and Cousin Skeeter, mainly because I had a big crush on Meagan Good as a kid!

Dallas Dupree Young: My character Stuart is an entrepreneur. He is very innovative, he is creative, he is impulsive and he gets himself into sticky situations a lot but unintentionally. My character and I can relate because we both love video games, we both love our families, but I don’t exactly get into sticky situations all the time.

BCK: How was it working with you your cast members?

Dallas Dupree Young: I had an amazing time. They were always joking around, we were dancing dancing and that first episode was hilarious, there were so many animals and I personally love animals. I got to hang out with them. And an Alpaca actually peed on our rug.

BCK: When did you start acting?

Dallas Dupree Young: I started acting when I was nine-years-old. That’s when I got my first role in Murder Among Friends.

BCK: Do you love acting? What do you do other than acting?

Dallas Dupree Young: Yes, I love acting. Acting is my passion. I want to do it for the rest of my life. I do do other things like sports. My favorite sports are baseball, basketball, and football.

BCK: Your father and brother are famous athletes. Did you want to pursue baseball instead of acting?

Dallas Dupree Young: Actually for a long time, I was practicing to be like my father and my brother because I wanted to play on the Colorado Rockies like they did, so I wanted to play baseball for a long time but then I realized that acting is definitely what I wanted to do.

BCK: If you had to have a dream role, what would that be?

Dallas Dupree Young: I would love to work with Denzel Washington. I would love to be his son.

BCK: Who else would you love to collaborate with?

Dallas Dupree Young: I would love to collaborate with Will Smith and Lebron James. It would be cool if Lebron James had a cameo on a movie, that would be fun.

BCK: If you could talk to your 21-year-old self, what would you tell him to remember about the person that you are today?

Dallas Dupree Young: I would tell him to always stay humble, and to always love God and everyone around you. And I would also tell him to keep working hard, because you never know if you slip a little bit or stop working, God won’t give you any jobs anymore and that will just be the end of that.

BCK: Do you have any upcoming projects that we should look out for?

Dallas Dupree Young: No, just Cousins for Life right now.

BCK: Where can our readers find you online?

Dallas Dupree Young: I am on Instagram. Follow me on @dallasdboy

BCK: How old are you?

Scarlet Spencer: I am 11-years-old.

BCK: Can you tell us a little bit about your character in the upcoming series, Cousins for Life how are you guys similar and how are you guys different?

Scarlet Spencer: Ivy is super positive, she’s an activist and wants to make the world a better place. I want to make the world a better place too, we are just doing it in different ways. Ivy may be doing it better than me but we are not counting.

BCK: Ivy appears to be an animal-lover. Are you an animal-lover in real life?

Scarlet Spencer: Yes, I am definitely an animal-lover. I go to this animal shelter to pet the cats and walk the dogs.

BCK: When did you start acting?

Scarlet Spencer: I started acting at six-years-old. I saw a Broadway production and I told my mom that I wanted to do that but she didn’t want to move out to New York, so I said what can I do here, and she said acting, so I just dove right it.

BCK: You were last seen in the role as Will Smith’s daughter in Bright? How was it working with him and what did you learn from him?

Scarlet Spencer: It was an amazing experience working with him. He gave me a few acting tips. One of them was “ABA-Always Be Acting”.

BCK: What does that actually mean?

Scarlet Spencer: Keep acting until they say cut.

BCK: Did Will Smith give you any other tips?

Scarlet Spencer: No, not any other tips, just seeing him work, helped me learn.

BCK: Have you always wanted to be an actress? Is acting something that you want to pursue when you get older?

Scarlet Spencer: When I get older, I definitely want to do this but when I was younger, I had no idea. I just wanted to try a bunch of things and see what I liked. First, I did dance when I was two or three. Then, I moved on to gymnastics. Then, I got into acting.

BCK: You have worked with Will Smith. Is there anyone else that you would like to work with in the future?

Scarlet Spencer: I would definitely want to work again with Will Smith because it was really fun working with him and Dwayne Johnson. I feel like it would definitely be fun working with him.

BCK: How is it working with your cast members on Cousins for Life?

Scarlet Spencer:They are a lot of fun. We have a lot of fun hanging out with each other offset in the little food area. We like to play basketball. Whoever wins, gets bragging rights for the rest of the day.

BCK: How did you like working with all of those animals on the first episode of the show?

Scarlet Spencer: It was really fun working with them. Some of them wouldn’t listen, but it made it a lot more fun on set. The giant Alpaca in the background peed on the rug.

BCK: If had to give any advice to any child that wants to become an actor/actress, what would you tell them?

Scarlet Spencer: I would tell them to keep trying. Out of every 100 auditions you go on, you will probably just get one. It’s not like that they do’t like you, they just want something different. As an actor, you do get a lot of rejection.

BCK: If you could talk to your 21-year-old self, what would you tell her to remember about the person that you are today?

Scarlet Spencer: Just be thankful. Because the people you meet on the way up, can keep helping you and helping you, so don’t forget about anyone.

BCK: Do you have any upcoming projects that we should look out for?

Scarlet Spencer: No, not right now. I am just auditioning and trying to find a job.

BCK: How do you balance out school and work? Are you homeschooled?

Scarlet Spencer: Yes, I am homeschooled.

BCK: What are some of your favorite subjects in school?

Scarlet Spencer: My favorite subject in school is math. It is pretty easy for me. It is just numbers.

BCK: How is your relationship with Dallas on set?

Scarlet Spencer: It’s really great working with Dallas, he is one of my best friends as well as Micah Abbey. They’re just a lot of fun to hang out with. And we are all super competitive.

BCK: Where can our readers find you online?

Scarlet Spencer: Readers can find me @scarletsophiaspencer

*Dallas Dupree Young and Scarlet Sofia Spencer star in the new Nickelodeon sit-com ‘Cousins for Life.’*On Saturday January 5, 2019 Nickelodeon premiered a new sit-com, “Cousins for Life,” starring Dallas Dupree Young (HBO’s “The Good Place”) as Stuart and Scarlet Sofia Spencer (Netflix’s “Bright”) as Ivy, cousins forced to live under one roof. “Cousins for Life” airs on Nickelodeon Saturdays at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT.

“I watch so many Nickelodeon shows when I heard I was in the car going to acting class. I was screaming in the car,” said Dallas about when he found out he got the lead role in a Nickelodeon comedy series. “I felt so bad for the people in the car with me.”

Young is not new to acting even though he started in 2016. His credits already include the HBO series “The Good Place” from 2016 -2017, ABC’s series “The Mayor” (2017), The Steven Spielberg director and Warner Bros Pictures presentation of Ready Player One (2018) and ABC Family’s “The Fosters” (2018).

“My mom told me to bring my phone to her and she started recording me,” Scarlet said about when she heard the news she would had a lead role in a Nickelodeon sit-com. “She called my agent who said I got the role, I was screaming!”

Guess the screaming on both their parts tell you how much passion they will put into the roles of Stuart and Ivy, who are 12 years-olds from very different back ground forced to live in one household. They learn however they are better together.

“This is the biggest role I’ve every had…I had recurring roles. It’s a multiple camera show,” Dallas pointed out about being on Nickelodeon, the number-one entertainment network watched by children reaching over 90 million household in just the United States. “(Stuart) He is an entrepreneur who is very creative but gets in sticky situations.”

“(Ivy) She is an activist who wants to make the world a better place, but has a hard head,” Scarlet said about her character. With the help of her mother she admitted that her character sounds a lot like her.

When asked what they hope kids watching the show learn from it Young said, “That even though you are cousins and you don’t get along sometimes, you have to respect them.”

Spencer said she hopes the show teaches viewers “how important family really is and to always be positive.” www.nick.com/cousins-for-life
