The good-looking group have gone down a storm with American teenagers since they began touring the US with Big Time Rush, and it would seem their attempt to crack the States exceeded all expectations when they were honoured at the bash in LA on Saturday night.

And the 1D boys, famed for their young and loyal fan base, couldn't be more appreciative.

American fans are particularly keen on Irish singer Niall

'It means a lot that the Kids’ Choice Awards are decided by the Nickelodeon audience,' said frontman Harry Styles.

'The support that we’ve got from our fans both at home and in America has been amazing. We have the best fans in the world and we're incredibly grateful to them.'

Still buzzing from their wins, he later added on Twitter: 'I feel incredibly lucky to have the life I do..I met some amazing people today. And had a lot of fun. Thank you so much .x'

After witnessing the likes of Justin Bieber and Twilight's Taylor Lautner getting gunged at the event, he posted on Twitter: 'Glad I escaped the slime ! :) x', .

And it was a great night for One Direction, as Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik scooped the best UK band and single awards.

And when they performed What Makes You Beautiful, even First Lady Michelle Obama was up on her feet and dancing.

They were clearly all having the slime of their lives.

Hosted by international superstar and 10-time KCA winner Will Smith, the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards 2012 were broadcast from the Galen Center at USC in Los Angeles where kids’ top choices in television, movies, music and sports were revealed through devices including a flying blimp and a silver statue man. Smith made an aerial entrance into the venue by parachuting down from the official KCA blimp, a 246-foot orange airship situated above the arena. After rappelling to the stage and deactivating a booby trap set by a mysterious Creepy Voice determined to stop the show, Smith kicked off the celebration with a performance of “Can U Handle This” and balloons filled with confetti and slime.

The largest Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards saw several special appearances on stage including First Lady Michelle Obama who made her first-ever appearance at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards to present Taylor Swift with this year’s The Big Help Award in recognition of Swift’s ongoing charitable work. That's quite an entrance: Will Smith parachutes from a orange blimp into the Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards

Having starred in blockbuster movies such as Independence Day, Men In Black and Ali, Will Smith likes to do things in a big way.

As the host of Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards, he continued this tradition by staging an elaborate and fake parachute entrance to the ceremony.

The 25th annual award show began with the 43-year-old circling the University of Southern California in Los Angeles from a huge 246-foot orange airship.

Here we go: Will Smith surprised viewers by jumping out of a blimp to open the Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards

Get ready: The Hollywood superstar psyches himself up before attempting the jump from a blimp

The skit showed Smith introducing the programme from the cockpit before announcing that he would be jumping out of the aircraft and parachuting down into the Galen Center.

The father-of-three then moved to the door of the trademark Nickelodeon blimp and appeared to jump out of it.

However, the stunt was actually the result of some very clever digital animation and special effects.

Blast off: The actor didn't actually jump from a blimp but used elaborate, digitally-animation to make it appear he did

Falling down: Will appeared to jump from the blimp above the Galen Center at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles

Incoming: The rapper turned actor soared through the air while the audience watched the action from huge TV screens

As the lights in the arena went out and screaming fans waved their glowsticks around, Smith was shown on screen hurtling towards the building in a blue jump suit and with a orange parachute.

The i, Robot star was then seen landing on the roof of the Galen Center, looking a little worse for wear after the fake jump.

As if that wasn't enough, the Just the Two of Us singer was then lowered down from the roof and landed on the stage to huge applause from the star studded audience.

Safe landing: Will was seen on the roof of the Galen Center before being hoisted down onto the stage area

Grand entrance: Smith arrived inside the building to a huge amount of screaming from the audience

Shake the room: The Men In Black star performed Can U Handle This as balloons filled with confetti and slime fell into the audience

Will was hoisted from the rafters as a dramatic light show began and focused on the actor as he kicked off the celebration with a performance of Can U Handle This and balloons filled with confetti and slime fell into the audience.

'The Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards is always the year’s liveliest, slimiest and most outrageous party for kids and teens,' said Smith.

'I’m honoured they wanted me to host this year so I can have a front row seat to take part in the fun.'

Two-time Academy-Award Smith recently finished filming Columbia Pictures’ Men in Black III, which will be released this spring in the UK.
Up next, he will begin filming and producing One Thousand A.E. co-starring Jaden Smith.

Reach out: As Will stripped off his blue jump suit and performed in a gold jacket, the crowd went wild

The first lady invited the boys to take part in the traditional Easter egg hunt at The White House at the weekend, but unfortunately they have other commitments in Australia. Harry, Zayn, Niall, Liam and Loius met the president's wife after performing You Don’t Know You’re Beautiful, at the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards. Michelle was attending the event with her daughters Malia, 13, and Sasha, ten and was spotted dancing when the British band were on stage. A source told the Sun that the band were honoured to be invited to The White House and would love to go another time. The performance also bagged One Direction a few celebrity fans as Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez were spotted dancing in the audience. Kelly Osbourne admitted she was proud that the band are big hits in the US. 'They are so amazing and they are so lovely and it makes me so happy – it’s like the Brits taking over I love it,' she said. Last month, 1D became the first UK band ever to score No.1 on the Billboard 200 chart with their debut album - something even The Beatles could not achieve. One Direction charm the Obamas BRITISH pop sensations One Direction have chosen a trip to Australia over a personal invitation by Michelle Obama to visit the White House. The UK "X Factor" stars met President Barack Obama's wife Michelle, 48, backstage at the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards in Los Angeles. Last week, One Direction became the first British band to debut at No.1 in the US album chart with "Up All Night", which sits in second place on the Australian charts. Michelle and daughters Malia, 13, and Sasha, 10, beamed as they danced to the lads at the LA bash. The pop five-piece - Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik - then charmed the First Lady backstage. Ladies' man Styles, 18, tickled Michelle by asking how they order pizza living at the White House. She told him they have to make their own. He later described Michelle as "a very attractive older woman". "She invited them to the White House for their annual Easter egg hunt on Easter Monday. It was such an honour," a source said. Sadly the band was unable to accept her invitation as they are coming to Australia for a tour this month. But the source added, "They'd love to go another time."

One Direction seal US takeover With their cheeky-chappy grins and catchy pop songs, X Factor boyband One Direction sealed their takeover of the US music scene by running away with two Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards. Wolverhampton lad Liam Payne and his bandmates walked away with gongs for Best UK Band and Best UK Newcomer at the bash held in LA on Saturday. The star-studded ceremony, hosted by Will Smith, also saw the likes of Michelle Obama, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and Selena Gomez turn out. And so impressed was Mrs Obama with One Direction’s performance of their hit single What Makes You Beautiful, she invited them to visit the White House after bumping into them backstage. The group, however, were unable to make the date as their bid for global domination is set to take them to Australia next week. According to reports, when asked what they thought of the First Lady, 18-year-old Liam from Bushbury rated her an 11 out of 10, adding: “She’s a very classy woman, very elegant.” Last week, the fivesome became the first British band to debut at number one in the US album chart. Up All Night went straight into the top spot, outperforming the likes of The Beatles, U2 and Coldplay, all of whom have tried to crack the notoriously tough Amercian market. The band’s album sold 176,000 copies in the US in the space of a week.

ONE DIRECTION REJECT MICHELLE OBAMA DATE Michelle Obama has been courting the One Direction boys for a play date. The Sun reports that Mrs Obama invited the boys round to The White House for an Easter Egg hunt after meeting the five-piece boy band backstage at the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards in LA. Ladies' man Harry Styles is said to have laid the jokes on thick, asking the First Lady how she orders pizza at The White House. Her response, that she makes them herself, was an enticing nod to Mrs Obama's culinary prowess - though not enough to seal the deal with the Brits, who spurned the date because of "a busy tour schedule". A source close to the band said: "They'd love to go another time."

Kristen Stewart led the orange carpet glamour pack (yes, we did say Kristen Stewart) in a cobalt blue Stella McCartney lace mini and matching Barbara Bui platforms – which she later swapped for Converse to collect her Favourite Movie Actress award - and a vampy, no pun intended, high ponytail. Emma Stone went for simple but statement in an origami pleated Antonio Berardi skater dress accessorised with nude Alejandro Ingelmo and beau Andrew Garfield, finally confirming their romance in public. Favourite TV Actress and Favourite Female Singer winner Selena Gomez went head-to-head with Favourite Voice From an Animated Movie winner Katy Perry in a battle of the abs, as both ladies opted for midriff baring skirt and crop top combos. Selena sparkled in a baroque Dolce & Gabbana jewelled two-piece, while Katy paid tribute to the awards’ tradition for sliming attendees in a green gunge covered bra top, printed Gerlan Jeans skirt and matching Prada peep toes. You’ve got to give the girl credit for getting in the spirit of things! Other winners on the night included Adele for Favourite UK Female Artist, One Direction picked up Favourite UK Band, while Justin Beiber took home the Favourite Male Singer gong, making it a double celebration for Tinsletown’s cutest young couple. Check back later for our gallery with all the red carpet action including Heidi Klum, Kelly Osbourne and Taylor Swift.

One Direction decline White House invitation Tour commitments force boyband to turn down Michelle Obama's offer to join her family's Easter Monday egg hunt One Direction are too busy for the White House. As the boyband attempt to break America, they have been forced to decline an invitation to join Barack Obama's family at a forthcoming Easter egg hunt. Last weekend, the chart-topping mop-tops met Michelle Obama at the Nickelodeon Kid's Choice awards. Impressed with the quintet – or swayed, perhaps, by the opinions of her young daughters – the first lady invited One Direction to join them at the White House's annual Easter Monday egg hunt. Unfortunately, the BBC reports, Malia and Sasha Obama will have to hunt for chocolate without the distraction of British-Irish schoolboys: One Direction are heading off for a tour of Australia. Asked about the Obamas, One Direction's singers chose their words carefully. "[Michelle] is a very classy woman, very elegant," said Liam Payne. He reportedly rated her "an 11 out of 10". Harry Styles, meanwhile, said he had "too much respect for Barack" to remark on the first lady's appearance. One Direction have proven a surprise success in America, where their debut album was released on 13 March. Selling 176,000 copies in its first week, Up All Night became the first British debut to instantly top the US charts. That's an even better result than the former X Factor contestants had closer to home: both in Ireland and the UK, Up All Night peaked at No 2.

White House invite for Louis and One Direction SOUTH Yorkshire pop sensation Louis Tomlinson and the rest of One Direction received the ultimate US endorsement - when they were invited by First Lady Michelle Obama to play at the White House. She has invited the boyband to the White House annual Easter egg hunt after they scooped two awards at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards 2012. The group are taking America by storm, last week becoming the first British group to have their debut album reach number one in the US Billboard chart. The boys - Louis, who grew up in Bessacarr, Doncaster, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, and Liam Payne - won awards for Best UK Band and Best UK Newcomer. They performed their hit single ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ at the awards ceremony in Los Angeles, which was hosted by Hollywood superstar Will Smith and attended by Mrs Obama, who presented one of the awards. Louis - whose mum Johannah was at the awards - said after the show on Twitter: “Wow that was so much fun!!” Michelle Obama was accompanied by her daughters Malia, 13, and Sasha, 10. But it has been reported the boys were unable to accept the invitation due to commitments in Australia. The band joined other award winners including Katy Perry, Taylor Lautner, Big Time Rush, Selena Gomez, Kristen Stewart, LMFAO, Justin Bieber, Olly Murs and Adele. Louis’ bandmate Harry Styles said: “It means a lot that the Kids’ Choice Awards are decided by the Nickelodeon audience. “The support we’ve got from our fans both at home and in America has been amazing.”

The first FAMILY of fashion: Michelle Obama rocks leather trousers while Malia and Sasha step out in on-trend ASOS Most had been keeping an eye out for green slime and glitzy celebrity guests but it was Michelle Obama’s daring wardrobe choice which had the fashion set glued to last night's Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards. The First Lady stepped out in leather pants, designed by New York-based designer Wes Gordon, for the star-studded event which she attended with her daughters Malia, 13 and Sasha, 10. Mrs Obama's two girls also helped shine the light on lesser-known designers, both wearing designs by UK-based shopping website ASOS. Stylish: The U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama on stage at last night's Kids' Choice Awards in LA. She wore leather pants, a daring choice for the President's wife Malia wore a detailed leather Obi belt, priced at $35.81 while Sasha wore a grey flared dress splashed with a monochrome geometric print priced at $75.20. Both items are available online. As for Mrs Obama's skin-tight trousers, which were paired with a shimmery grey hounds tooth tunic, her look has no doubt provided Mr Gordon with some of the best publicity that money can't buy. The 25-year-old designer, who has worked for Tom Ford and Oscar de la Renta since graduating from Central Saint Martins College in London, has been on the radar of savvy fashionistas for some time now. But it is of course the Obama endorsement which will send the Atlanta-born designer into the mainstream. Fashionable family: Sasha (left) and Malia (right) each sported pieces by ASOS The designer also launched a capsule collection for U.S. retailer Jones New York. He had been approached by the store after his Fall 2011 showing, which was staged in February 2010. Smiles: The Obamas seemingly had a great time at the event and avoided a dreaded green slime attack, but only just Mr Gordon told U.S. newspaper Metro that the collection 'addresses how the modern young woman wants her wardrobe to look.' He said: 'The idea was to take a little bit of what I do in terms of tailoring and [using] cool material.'

Sorry Michelle, we're too busy: One Direction turn down White House invite from First Lady Hot British export One Direction have turned down an invitation to the White House. First Lady Michelle Obama invited the boyband to Monday's annual Easter Egg Roll when she met the gang at the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards on Saturday. But the five-piece - comprised of Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik - have not been able to free up their schedule. No can do: One Direction's Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik have declined an invite to the White House due to a prior commitment, seen here at Saturday's Kid's Choice Awards in LA A spokesman for the group, which was formed on the UK version of the X Factor in 2010, told Politico.com they had to decline 'due to prior commitments' and will be in Australia. It was previously reported how Mrs Obama had asked the group to come to the White House after being bowled over by their performance over the weekend at the Los Angeles event. A source told the Sun: 'She invited them to the White House for their annual Easter egg hunt on Easter Monday. It was such an honour.' Made an impression: Harry called Michelle Obama- who was seen dancing in the crowd during their song 'a very attractive older woman' Exclusive celebration: The boys were invited to the annual White House Easter egg hunt Ever the charmer, Harry amused the First Lady by asking how they order pizza from the White House. Michelle replied that they make their own. Harry went so far as to call Michelle a 'very attractive older woman.' Michelle in turn was obviously impressed with the British boys, and her daughters Malia, 13, and Sasha, ten, were every bit as excited as their mother, bouncing away alongside her. They've really made it! One Direction pose on the red carpet with the stars at Nickelodeon's 25th Annual Kids' Choice Awards Styles – who has dated 32-year-old Xtra Factor host Caroline Flack, said he had ‘too much respect for Barack’ to comment on the First Ladies' stunning appearance, while Payne happily rated her an 11 out of 10. He said: ‘She’s a very classy woman, very elegant.’ Sadly due to commitments in Australia, One Direction were unable to accept Michelle's invitation. A nice touch: The First Lady danced to the British band's songs and also presented an award on stage Glitz and glam: Mrs Obama dressed up for the even in a pair of metallic leggings and a sequin jacket by Wes Gordon According to the Sun's source: 'They'd love to go another time.' There's no doubt however that the invitation was the highest form of welcome to America that the group could have wished for after their album Up All Night topped the US Billboard charts. Belting out their hit single You Don’t Know You’re Beautiful, it was clear to see the British boy band are dearly loved by young ladies in the States as they eagerly reached out to touch the teenage heartthrobs during their Kid's Choice performance. In demand: The band performed their hit single You Don't Know You're Beautiful Off the scale: Payne revealed that he thinks she a classy woman Poplar: The U.S. fans apparently like Niall Horan the best because of his 'All-American' looks One of the best dressed women of the night, it was clear that the First Lady was having a whale of the time listening to the British stars. The boys received prime spots at the exciting ceremony which was celebrating its 25th year, and the singers told the Mail Online they were really honoured to be sitting in the front row amongst stars such as Halle Berry and Heidi Klum. And they were clearly right at home mingling with music superstars such as Justin Bieber and Katy Perry. But it seemed as if stars who have been in the industry much longer than One Direction were more thrilled to be in their presence. Kelly Osbourne admitted she was proud that her countrymen were blowing up in America. 'They are so amazing and they are so lovely and it makes me so happy – it’s like the Brits taking over I love it.' Pretty big-named fans: Katy Perry joined Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez in the audience as they watched One Direction perform

One Direction hits Kids’ Choice Awards orange carpet; fans go insane (photos) One Direction was the most anticipated stars on the orange carpet. The 25th Annual Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards at USC's Galen Center in Los Angeles on Saturday had fans waiting to catch a glimpse of the popular band, even if it was for a split second. As every star that arrived got yells and screams of delight, there was a big difference when the guys from the band showed up for the show. When One Direction arrived, the noise was so loud people couldn't hear themselves think. Fans didn’t stop screaming and jumping up and down until the guys were out of site. Unable to do interviews, the media people were looking at each other in awe as rarely does this type of excitement find its way to the carpet. One Direction was the biggest arrival of the Kids' Choice Awards. Bigger then Big Time Rush and louder than Katy Perry. One Direction has said to have taken America by storm by introducing fans to their music and if the noise level on the Orange Carpet was any gauge on how much success the guys will have in the U.S.A., expect to see them everywhere. Take a look at the photo slideshow of One Direction at the Kids’ Choice Awards.

Michelle gets slimed: First Lady caught in green goo attack at children's awards Michelle Obama got more than she'd bargained for when she turned up at last night's Kids' Choice Awards. But perhaps it should have been no surprise when she was splattered with slime at the conclusion of Hollywood's zaniest awards show. Drenching celebrities with green goo is a hallowed tradition at the KCAs, and the First Lady was lucky not to be directly in the firing line.

You've been slimed! The First Lady ended up with goo on her face at the awards ceremony
But sitting close to the stage at the awards, she did pick up a bit of slime when Will Smith and Justin Bieber were caught in the gooey crosshairs. Mrs Obama, who attended the awards with her daughters Sasha and Malia, seemed to take the mess in good humour, laughing along with the raucous crowd and even dancing in her seat. Earlier in the evening, the First Lady gave the 'Big Help' award for charity work to Taylor Swift. Upon receiving the award, the pop star said, 'I am freaking out.'

Host Will Smith opened the 25th annual Kids' Choice Awards in Los Angeles promising a record amount of the show's trademark green gunk. Though some 20 awards are presented at the KCAs, the real suspense isn't who will take home a 'Blimp' (the show's Oscar), it's when and on whom the slime will spill. It's like a baptism into kid-dom that can come at any moment: from a hidden bucket, dumped from the rafters or exploded from little orange blimps.

Presenter: Mrs Obama was possibly the most famous of all the stars handing out awards during the show
'No one is safe from the slime!' screamed Mr Smith. 'You have to earn the slime! It's an honour.' The KCAs are Nickelodeon's annual celebration for kids, and it's often the most-watched children's programme of the year. They draw a considerable roster of stars looking to thank their smallest fans and cater to their youngest demographics.

Michelle Obama Receives Standing Ovation; Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez Win Big at Kids’ Choice Awards The 25th annual ceremony was hosted by Will Smith, and also saw Katy Perry, Adam Sandler and "Alvin and the Chipmunks" take home awards. Nickelodeon’s 25th annual Kids' Choice Awards featured plenty of star power, with Will Smith hosting and Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, and Johnny Depp battling for coveted blimp statues. But the night’s biggest crowd pleaser wasn’t a teen heartthrob or a film star. First Lady Michelle Obama received a standing ovation as she presented Taylor Swift with the Big Help Award, which Swift received for raising money for tornado and flood victims in the United States. The cheering crowd drowned out Obama as she spoke. Obama said Swift has "shattered every expectation of what a twenty-year-old can accomplish." PHOTOS: Showbiz Kids: 17 of Hollywood's Most Famous Offspring The first lady’s presence necessitated guests going through metal detectors, which hadn’t been the case at previous ceremonies. Obama avoided getting a mess on her stylish metallic-looking jacket, but no Kids’ Choice Awards could be complete without someone getting covered in green slime. Twilight star Taylor Lautner was a casualty halfway through the show, and Smith and Bieber were covered in goo at the show’s close.

The OneDer Year: How One Direction conquered the world in 12 months In one year, these lads have sold 12m records and earned £40m to become the biggest boyband on the planet... not bad for X Factor losers They have sold 12 million records, scooped awards, entertained at the Olympics and made such an impact in the US they’re being hailed as bigger than the Beatles. Not a bad year for a group of X Factor rejects. Last September Harry, Niall, Zayn, Liam and Louis probably wondered which One Direction their career was going in – up or down. They got a big buzz from the release of their debut single, spending the day flying round the UK by helicopter to sign copies of What Makes You Beautiful at HMV stores. For the first time in their lives they felt like real pop stars – and the hysterical fans that turned out to scream their adoration left them delighted, if slightly bemused. “We know we are living the dream,” admitted former choirboy Niall Horan, then 17, “but I don’t know if it will ever sink in.” Exactly 12 months on, One Direction are living a life beyond their wildest dreams. On their first trip across the pond in March they were mobbed by American fans in scenes reminiscent of Beatlemania and were invited to the White House by President Obama’s smitten wife Michelle. The band have also won themselves an impressive list of celebrity fans, including Katy Perry, Rihanna, Justin Bieber and the Obamas. Katy, Taylor Swift and Selina Gomez were spotted dancing in the aisles when the band performed at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards in America, along with the First Lady and her daughters Malia, 13, and Sasha, 10. In the past week alone they’ve picked up three gongs at the MTV Video Music Awards, signed a multi-million dollar deal to be the new faces of Pepsi and decided they don’t really need a duet with Justin Bieber to boost sales of their upcoming second album. After all, the single’s doing well enough... Live While We’re Young, out at the end of the month, has become the fastest-selling pre-order single in history – topping the charts in 40 countries including the UK, Australia, France, Spain and Brazil. So, is it sinking in yet, Niall? It’s hard to believe that One Direction is actually a collection of X Factor flops. Harry, now 18, Zayn, 19, Louis, 20, Liam, 19, and Niall weren’t good enough to make the cut as solo singers but were given a second chance as a group. Even after that, they trailed in a distant third in the public vote, behind Matt Cardle and Rebecca Ferguson. So just how could One Direction – or 1D to their adoring Directioners – conquer the world so quickly? The answer – apart from the fact they do actually have real talent – is the man they call Mr Growl, a shrewd marketing strategy and by harnessing the power of social networking like never before. Simon Cowell spotted the real winners long before the X Factor final and handed them a £2million contract within days. Tim Byrne, creative director of his record company Syco, moulded and polished 1D as a group during the show but work began in earnest when they were flown straight to Los Angeles to record with a top producer. During the X Factor tour, their management team were busily commissioning some of the world’s best songwriters to prepare material for the first 1D album. The group’s first single shot to number one on the UK chart last September and in February it debuted at number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. Sonny Takhar, Simon Cowell’s right-hand man and MD of Syco Music masterminded the next stage, exploiting social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Tumblr. It allowed the boys to communicate directly with teenage fans and their popularity spread like wildfire. The group currently has more than six million followers on Twitter collectively. Each member has a similar number individually, because, as with all boybands, girl fans like to pick their favourite. Social networking allowed 1D to shortcut the months of slog around local radio stations that unknown bands normally face when trying to break America. They drew 10,000 fans by word of mouth to their performance on the Today show in New York in March and the buzz has earned them further appearances on the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice awards and Saturday Night Live. Liam, 18, to the Daily Mirror earlier this year: “Our tour manager told us it would take three years of hard graft to do well in America, so for it to have taken off as it has is incredible. “Twitter has been a major factor in getting our name out there. Just as Twitter has gone up, so we have, too. They’ve gone hand in hand. “And, picture-wise, Tumblr has helped us a lot. It has really accelerated our success.” Niall added: “If you ask American fans where they found out about us it’s always Twitter, YouTube, Tumblr, Facebook... it’s the most powerful thing we have.” And the boys’ record label chief Takhar declared: “Social media has become the new radio – it has never broken an act globally like this before.” 1D’s first album, Up All Night, topped the charts in 16 countries. The group holds a Guinness World Record as the first British group in history to reach number one in America with a debut album, which sold 176,000 copies in the US in a single week. Syco hired ad agencies to help market 1D as a brand. They are never dressed in matching outfits or given cheesy dance routines because their stylists are under orders to retain their individuality. Yet independence is only encouraged up to a point and their personal relationships are carefully managed. When TV presenter Caroline Flack, 32, briefly dated Harry, the relationship led to death threats from jealous fans. Since then the band have been instructed to keep their relationships strictly under wraps. They have also been ordered to tone down their partying after a boozy appearance at the Brits. But the marketing strategy got the money pouring in. There have been three 1D books, published by HarperCollins, two of which went straight to the top of the bestsellers lists and the biggest selling calendar of all time. The group became brand ambassadors for Pokemon, launched two exclusive One Direction phones for Nokia and have a new range of toys and games out soon. They have been nominated for 36 music awards and won an incredible 18 of them. At the end of this month they will be releasing their new single, Live While We’re Young, and the album, Take Me Home, will be following a short time later in November. In December the band will headline at New York’s iconic Madison Square Garden before embarking on their second World Tour next February. So far they have 101 shows in the UK, Ireland, North America and Australasia planned. Ticket sales here reached 300,000 within a day of release including a sell-out six dates on the trot at the O2 Arena. In North America, the group will be putting on additional shows due to “overwhelming demand” and in Australia and New Zealand tickets worth £10million have been sold. One Direction will jet around the globe in private planes to sing for millions of adoring fans. A year ago it was a chopper tour to three HMV stores. What an incredible journey!
