MTV International Goes With Degrassi

Nickelodeon USA's TeenNick network airs "Degrassi", and MTV Networks Europe partly owns Nickelodeon UK and Ireland, which could mean that "Degrassi" could also be broadcast on Nickelodeon UK and Ireland.

MTV's international outlets have picked up Canadian-made teen drama Degrassi for worldwide broadcast.

Distributor Echo Bridge Entertainment has licensed seasons eight and nine of the series, which has been running for 10 seasons on Canada's CTV and on TeenNick in the US.

Seasons eight and nine (45x30') will begin airing on the MTV channels on October 23, in Spain, Portugal, Greece, Italy, Scandinavia, UK, Brazil, Germany, Benelux, Australia and New Zealand.

Degrassi is produced by Epitome Pictures in Toronto.

The news comes after Nickelodeon joined French video games developer Ubisoft and France Televisions on an animated TV series around the Raving Rabbid franchise.

Ubisoft's new film and TV production arm Ubisoft Motion Pictures will produce the show, which France Televisions will broadcast as a 78x7' series.

Nick picks up global rights out of France and will package the show as 26 half-hours to launch on its international channels in 2013.

Ubisoft (Assassin's Creed, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six) created the zany Raving Rabbids franchise five years ago. It has gone on to spawn five video games and numerous viral YouTube videos that have clocked up 41 million hits.

"This partnership represents a major milestone in Ubisoft's strategy to expand its brands to new media, thereby attracting new audiences to its games," said Jean-Julien Baronnet, CEO of Ubisoft Motion Pictures.

Ubisoft tapped former EuropaCorp chief Baronnet to launch the film and TV division in May this year. The firm already has a CGI studio and a special effects arm.
