Viacom cabler will rely on hitmaker as it seeks to rebound

Schneider
In the effort to stem the ratings slump at Nickelodeon, the kidvid cabler is turning to its most reliable live-action hitmaker: Dan Schneider.

The prolific producer has struck a hefty three-year development pact with the Viacom cabler. The first project under the new pact is "Sam and Cat," which aims to build on the fanbase by uniting characters from two past Nick comedies from Schneider: "iCarly" and "Victorious."

Jennette McCurdy in "iCarly"
Schneider has been a pioneer in integrating Web content and social media into the fabric of his shows. He'll be doing much more of that in the future as producers in all genres look to harness the power of second-screen activity to drive buzz and engagement among fans. For Nick shows, getting traction on Facebook, Twitter and other platforms is vital to reaching its core tween and teen aud.

Ariana Grande in "Victorious"

"I'm always trying to bake Web elements into the DNA of my shows," Schneider told Variety.

He first began playing with TV-to-Web plugs back in 1999 on Nick's "The Amanda Show," when star Amanda Bynes' character would frequently reference the AmandaPlease.com site that featured related show content.

"When we set out on a new project, we're not just creating a TV show, we're creating a multiplatform (property)," Schneider said. "But as powerful as the Internet is, it's still not more powerful than TV. It all starts with the show."

"Sam and Cat" stars Jennette McCurdy and Ariana Grande as characters they played on "iCarly" and "Victorious," respectively, who launch a babysitting biz. Production on 20 episodes got under way earlier this month, and the show is set to premiere later this year.

Schneider, who started in the biz as an actor, boasts nearly 445,000 Twitter followers. When new episodes of his shows air, he's usually live-tweeting along with some of his actors in an effort to make fans feel like they have a personal connection to the cast and producers.

Schneider's roster of past Nick shows include "All That," "Kenan and Kel," "Drake and Josh," "Zooey 101." He produced the Bynes sitcom "What I Like About You" for the WB Network from 2002-06 but otherwise has stayed in the Nick stable. After such a long tenure, he has the kind of control over his shows that he knows would be hard to command anywhere else.

"There are very few people in the entertainment business who have the level of creative control that I do," he said. "Nickelodeon has always been generous in giving me a lot of latitude."

Schneider, repped by WME, is also committed to the tough assignment of courting the oh-so-fickle tween demo, as well as the challenge of working with actors who grow up on air. He prefers the specificity of developing for the Nick crowd because it has such broad reach with its target audience despite its recent viewership declines.

"Even with very popular (adult) primetime shows, you can't count on everyone to have seen them," Schneider said. But when a show hits big on Nick, "You can be sure that there isn't a kid in the country who hasn't at least heard something about it," he said.

'Kenan Thompson Doesn't Want To Be Seen With Me': Former Nickelodeon Star Kel Mitchell Says The Comedy Duo Will Never Reunite

From the Daily Mail:
'Kenan doesn't want to be seen with me': Former Nickelodeon star Kel Mitchell says the comedy duo will never reunite

Over recent years TV has seen the return of 90210, Dallas and a number of classic American programmes.

But the hopes for a Kenan and Kel reunion have been quashed as the comedy duo are no longer on speaking terms.

Although the breakdown of communication is apparently one-sided as Kel Mitchell says his former comedy partner Kenan Thomas 'is actively avoiding him.'

Not speaking: Kenan Thomas and Kel Mitchell, who were big in the 1990's, are no longer on speaking terms

In an interview with TMZ.com, the actor who played the orange-soda loving character of the same name said: 'The truth is Kenan does not want to be seen with me in any form of media, or even have my name mentioned around him.'

The Nickelodeon show was first broadcast in 1996, and followed the comedy capers of teens Kenan Rockmore and Kel Kimble for four years until the show was cancelled in 2000.

In that time the pair made 65 episodes and a made-for-TV film but since then Kenan and Kel have gone their separate ways.

High profile: On the sketch show Kenan has performed with a plethora of A List stars who guest host the show each week

Arguably, Kenan has enjoyed the most success since the show finished and is now the longest serving cast member of Saturday Night Live since joining in 2003.

The 34-year-old is currently working on a new NBC comedy pilot but his former co-star has not been approached to star.

According to Kel the pair were supposed to reunite for a magazine interview but the SNL star pulled out.

SNL: Kenan is the longest serving member in the current Saturday Nigh Live cast alongside Jason Sudeikis and Bill Hader

Moved on: Despite their success in the 1990's, the pair are no longer friends

No doubt trying to distance himself out of fear from only being remembered for the Nickelodeon role that shot him to fame.

But the former Kel Kimble doesn't hold a grudge but 'respects his choice of wanting to make a name for himself solo.'

Kel's most recent projects have been in animation lending his voice to shows Wild Grinders and Motorcity.

Kenan & Kel's Kel Mitchell has claimed that his former co-star Kenan Thompson wants nothing to do with him.

Thompson is currently developing a new NBC sitcom, but Mitchell told TMZ that he will not be appearing in the series.

"Kenan does not want to be seen with me in any form of media, or even have my name mentioned around him," said the 34-year-old.

Mitchell insisted that there is "no bad blood" on his side, adding that he is "not upset" with Thompson.

"I respect his choice of wanting to make a name for himself solo," he claimed.

"I'm not declining a [Kenan & Kel] reunion, I know the fans love the show and would love to see some type of appearance with us... I just don't see that ever happening because of how he really feels."

Thompson previously told Digital Spy that he "had some of the best times of [his] life" on the Kenan & Kel set, but claimed that a reunion is unlikely to happen.

"I think the show lives better where it's at, in the time it was in," he said. "I wouldn't want to taint that."

Thompson and Mitchell first appeared together on Nickelodeon sketch comedy series All That, before starring in sitcom Kenan & Kel from 1996 to 2000. The pair also shared the screen in 1997 [Nickelodeon Movie] film Good Burger.

Kenan & Kel reunion will never happen because Kenan hates Kel, according to Kel: Someone in trouble? Aww, here goes!
Don't count on ever seeing the "Kenan and Kel" reunion you always hoped for -- because Kel Mitchell tells TMZ, Kenan's dropped him like a hot potato ... and is actively avoiding him.

Kenan Thompson -- who starred with Kel in a million different Nickelodeon projects back in the day -- is currently developing a new comedy pilot with NBC, so we reached out to Kel to see if he'd be making a cameo.

BUT OUR DREAMS WERE DASHED TO PIECES.

Kel tells TMZ, "The truth is Kenan does not want to be seen with me in any form of media, or even have my name mentioned around him."

Kel says he nearly reunited with Kenan for an interview with a popular magazine but Kenan pulled out at the last minute ... and he thinks it's because Kenan's still trying to separate himself from his old co-star. - TMZ
Man, Kenan. Why you gotta be a hater like that.

You hate to see actor friends fight like this. Kenan, of course, is busy with Saturday Night Live and his soon-to-be comedy show on NBC. I don't even know what Kel is doing anymore, and I'm too lazy to search Google and find out. Post-Thanksgiving turkey coma.

The only other way to rekindle Kenan and Kel's apparent broken friendship: Good Burger 2: The Good Burgering. Re-cast Sinbad and Abe Vigoda as the second leads. Then watch as the magic takes place.

Kenan Thompson is developing a new sitcom for NBC.

The Kenan & Kel star - who currently features on Saturday Night Live - would play a man who moves in with his in-laws, according to TV Guide.

Saturday Night Live writer Bryan Tucker is penning the script for the pilot and will also executive produce alongside Thompson, SNL's Lorne Michaels and 30 Rock's Andrew Singer.

Prior to joining Saturday Night Live in 2003, Thompson starred in Nickelodeon's teen sitcom Kenan & Kel from 1996 to 2008 and also appeared with co-star Kel Mitchell in the 1997 film Good Burger.

His additional credits include 2004 movie Fat Albert and 2006's Snakes on a Plane.

Last year [2011], Thompson told Digital Spy that he was eager to begin writing and producing his own projects.

"I want to get into producing and writing more for myself," said the 34-year-old. "Setting up my own films and seeing what kind of personal touch I can put on movies, as opposed to just being in them - that's always a goal of mine."

TV Scoop NEWS / Kenan Thompson May Leave Saturday Night Live, Has New Comedy Series in Development

Is Saturday Night Live losing another veteran castmember?

Kenan Thompson, who has been with the NBC staple series since 2003, is teaming up with Lorne Michaels to write, executive producer and star in a comedy series, a source confirms to E! News.

Those duties would surely take him away from the rigorous schedule of SNL, but the insider tells us that while Thompson and Lorne's script has been picked up, no other plans have been made regarding his departure.

[...]

The comedy series in development, which is untitled at the moment, will have Thompson playing a guy who leaves New York City to move in with his in-law's in the suburbs.

Thompson would end a 10-year run on SNL if he excited, leaving behind such memorable sketches as "What's Up With That?", and his impersonations of Rev. Al Sharpton, Whoopi Goldberg and Charles Barkley. Other SNL vets who have recently exited the show for other projects include Kristen Wiig and Andy Samberg, and it's rumored that Jason Sudekis is on his way out come the new year.

Now that Kenan is possibly free of SNL, someone get Kel Mitchell on the phone.

(E! and NBC are both part of the NBCUniversal family.)
