Nickelodeon Nominated for Raft of Awards in 12th Annual Shorty Awards

Nickelodeon has been nominated for a raft of awards in the 2020 Shorty Awards, which honor the best people and organizations on social media!


SpongeBob SquarePants x Kyrie Irving x Nike (ViacomCBS Consumer Products | Nickelodeon), a collection of shoes inspired by the signature characters from SpongeBob SquarePants, as well as apparel and accessories, including t-shirts, a hoodie, socks and backpacks all designed by basketball superstar Kyrie Irving as part of the "Best Year Ever" has been nominated for four awards in the 2020 Shorty Awards: for Multi-Platform Campaign (in the "By Campaign" category), Entertainment ("By Industry"), Instagram ("Campaign by Platform" category) and Multi-Platform Partnership ("Influencer & Celebrity Brand Partnership" category).

Nickelodeon's JoJo Siwa for Amazon Prime Day (ViacomCBS Consumer Products), which saw Nickelodeon launch a raft of brand-new JoJo Siwa merchandise as part of Amazon's 2019 Prime Day, has been nominated for the "Retail & E-Commerce" award in the "By Industry" category.

Nickelodeon's official TikTok channel (Nickelodeon) has been nominated for the "TikTok Presence" award in the "By Overall Presence" category.

"Nickelodeon Birthday Flipbook" (Nickelodeon & The Flippist), a flipbook produced by Nickelodeon & The Flippist to celebrate Nickelodeon's 40th birthday, has been nominated for the "IGTV" award in the "Video By Platform" category.

And "Blue’s Clues & You Exclusive Scene" (Nickelodeon) has been nominated for the "Twitter Video" award in the "Video By Platform" category.

Winners of the 2020 Shorty Awards will be handed handed out virtually (due to the coronavirus pandemic) on Sunday, May 3.

Introducing Spotify Kids, A New Standalone App for the Next Generation of Listeners

Spotify is committed to bringing audio content such as music and stories to more people in more ways–including the next generation of listeners. That’s why we decided to launch a fun standalone app designed with safety in mind specifically for kids and families.

We sat down with Alex Norström, Spotify’s Chief Premium Business Officer, to learn a little more about the app.

1. Why create a Spotify Kids app now? What can users look forward to?
We know that families love listening together—whether it’s while driving in the car or cooking dinner together in the kitchen. But we also know that family members love to listen on their own too. That’s why we’re so excited to welcome the next generation of listeners—kids—into the Family Plan experience.

Kids consuming audio content, such as music and stories, isn’t a new phenomenon—in fact, they love it. But most audio experiences were built with adults in mind—meaning they’re not simple, easy, or fun for young kids to use.

Spotify Kids was born out of the desire to create a playground of sound just for kids—to build a place where younger kids can explore their favorite music and stories in a fun environment. The content is ad-free and hand-picked by a team of editors, and the experience is bursting with color. Our visuals help guide young minds through the app with simple navigation and scaled-back text. Before setting out to explore, each kid can also select a custom avatar and color theme to personalize their experience.

Spotify Kids is a composite of playlists, which makes it easy for kids to find music and stories from their favorite movies and TV shows or hit plays on a playlist to sing along to during their favorite activity—or their least favorite chore.

We’re thrilled to beta launch in Ireland and look forward to introducing Spotify Kids in all markets that have Premium Family in the coming months. As we evolve the app experience, we’ll roll out enhanced parental settings and controls for even more customization in an effort to give parents peace of mind.

2. How is the Spotify Kids app different from the original app? Any unique content?
Spotify Kids is a standalone app available exclusively for Premium Family subscribers and intended for kids ages 3+. The content within Kids is hand-picked by a team of editors, who have nearly 100 years of combined experience curating content for kids. They come from some of the most well-respected brands in this space, including Nickelodeon, Disney, Discovery Kids, and Universal Pictures, as well as Public Service in Sweden and BookBeat, which is a family- and kids-oriented audio streaming service.

Beyond the content, the entire Spotify Kids user experience looks and feels different from the Spotify app. And that’s intentional. It’s built for kids, with their specific cognitive skills in mind, and exudes a fun, familiar, playful, and bright atmosphere. This look and feel also varies by age group—for example, the artwork for younger kids is softer and character-based, while content for older kids is more realistic and detailed.

3. Why launch in beta? What are you hoping to learn?
Having a standalone app specifically for younger kids is a new space for Spotify, and we understand the sensitivities around content for children. We are being very deliberate in our launch approach. We’ve started with a beta launch in Ireland, knowing that this initial roll-out phase will yield many learnings from parents, caregivers and other experts as they begin to interact with the app.

As we evolve the Spotify Kids experience over time, we plan to enhance parental control features to allow for even more customization. We’ll also bring our audio expertise to the table with listening experiences that go beyond music—like more stories and audiobooks and eventually podcasts.

4. As you were building the app, did you tap any external resources? Say, consult with any parent organizations or conduct focus groups?
While launching this kids app is an exciting moment for Spotify, creating it was not a task we took lightly. We knew the importance of understanding parents’ needs and making sure they would have peace of mind about the content their kids are consuming.

Spotify has spent more than two years learning about this space, and we’ll continue to learn as people begin to interact with the app. We have gathered expert insight from a number of organizations, including the National Children’s Museum in Washington, D.C., and conducted our own studies with parents around the world and tapped into our Employee Resource Groups here at Spotify.

Spotify Kids is available starting today in Ireland. Ready to get started? Spotify Premium Family master account holders can simply download Kids from the App Store or Google Play, then sign in to their regular Spotify account. (If you’re new to Spotify, you’ll need to sign up for Premium Family before signing in to Spotify Kids.)

Virgin Media UK and NOW TV Ireland Offering Kids Channels for Free Amidst Coronavirus Outbreak

With schools being closed and kids being asked to stay at home in the wake of the COVID-19 (aka coronavirus) outbreak, British and Irish television providers are offering a raft of children's channels, including Nickelodeon, to customers at no extra cost.


British cable television provider Virgin Media is giving its customers the chance to watch Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network for free. As schools are closed across the UK, the popular kids channels will be available to watch with no additional subscription fee required. The channels are home to Henry Danger, The Thundermans, Victorious, Teen Titans Go and Apple & Onion to name a few.

Typically Virgin Media customers would have to add-on these channels and pay extra but for the foreseeable future it looks like families can make the most of the free kid’s channels until April 21.

The upgrade is available to customers on Virgin Media’s Player, Mixit (without Kids TV pick) and Maxit (without Kids TV pick) bundles at no extra cost.

Virgin Media has also given 2.7 million of its pay monthly mobile customers an additional 10 GB data and unlimited minutes at no extra cost, as well as permanently removing data caps for customers on its legacy broadband to help them stay connected.

NOW TV Ireland, the Irish arm of the IPTV series from Sky, has announced they're giving away free three-month kids passes for the remainder of March. It's in a bid to help parents keep their kids entertained while they juggle work and home responsibilities. According to a survey commissioned by the Irish government, 52% of Irish adults are working from home. And with kids on a hiatus from school, many houses will be a little busier than normal. This may impact work productivity for those juggling their day job and their role as Mum or Dad.

The kids pass includes uninterrupted access to hundreds of episodes of ad-free children’s entertainment. It includes channels like Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network plus a range of educational kid’s documentaries. The pass allows you to stream favourites such as SpongeBob SquarePants, The Loud House, Pokémon, Paw Patrol, Gruffalo, Peppa Pig and iCarly. Following the free period, the pass will cost €7.00 a month unless cancelled, so don’t forget to cancel your subscription after the three months if you don’t want to continue. The reason being, the pass renews automatically at €7 per month once your subscription is up.

Head of NOW TV Ireland, Michael Forry said, 'NOW TV really wants to help out all the parents who might be finding it difficult to balance work and home duties at the moment.'

With the hundreds of shows available to stream on the NOW TV Kids Pass we hope to make life a little easier over the next few weeks.'

Additionally, British satellite television provider Sky is giving extra benefits to its customers amid the coronavirus outbreak, including free Sky Go Extra, so homes can watch Sky TV on three screens at once, films being launched on its platform at the same time as their original cinema release and Disney+ available to stream from this week (March 24).

While Amazon is offering a free trial on its Kids Unlimited service. It gives customers access to thousands of kid-friendly books, movies, TV shows, educational apps and games.

Virgin and NOW TV join other TV providers around the world offering children's channels for free amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Virgin Media gives TV customers popular kid’s channels at no extra cost

Virgin Media will be giving its TV customers seven of its most popular children’s channels at no extra cost until 21st April.

With some parents across the UK at home with their littles ones, Virgin Media is offering families a helping hand to keep their kids entertained.

This includes family favourites such as Cartoon Network, Boomerang, Cartoonito and Nickelodeon. Across these channels, a range of shows from Ben 10, Paw Patrol, Teen Titans and classics like Tom and Jerry, ScoobyDoo and Spongebob Squarepants, will be available for kids to watch.

For extra flexibility, there’s also a thousand episodes On Demand, so parents can pick and choose a their kids’ favourite shows.

The full line up of extra channels for families to enjoy includes:

Cartoon Network
Boomerang
Cartoonito
Nickelodeon
Nick Jr
NickToons
Nick Jr Too

This television upgrade is available to customers on Virgin Media’s Player, Mixit (without Kids TV pick) and Maxit (without Kids TV pick) bundles at no extra cost. Eligible customers don’t have to do anything and there will be no change to their contract.

And to ensure customers can access important information from the NHS website without fear of going over their data allowance, Virgin Media has zero-rated www.111.nhs.uk, www.nhs.uk, www.gov.uk meaning these websites will not decrement customer’s allowances.

On This Day in 2001: Invader Zim Premiered on Nickelodeon


19 years of Zim, Gir and DOOOOOOM!

Invader Zim was created by Jhonen Vasquez and premiered on March 30, 2001. It ran for 27 episodes over two seasons on Nickelodeon, winning an Emmy Award and an Annie Award for individual achievement in animation (which went to storyboard artists Kyle Menke and Steve Ressel, respectively). In 2015, it became a comic book created by Vasquez and Oni Press, and a made-for-TV movie titled Invader ZIM: Enter the Florpus now available on Netflix.

The series chronicles an alien named Zim who arrived on Earth from his home planet of Irk with imperialistic intentions of conquering the planet (in order to gain favor with his Irken home race). Wildly ineffective but hilariously earnest, Zim and his robot companion GIR attempted to blend in and study the human race while simultaneously trying to enslave it. Despite Zim and GIR's subpar disguises, the only humans who realize they are extraterrestrials are school-aged paranormal investigator Dib.

On this day 19 years ago, the Fairly OddParents poofed onto our TV screens!

Fairly OddParents was created by renowned Nickelodeon creator Butch Hartman (Danny Phantom, T.U.F.F. Puppy, Bunsen Is a Beast), and started out as a series of shorts featured as part of Nickelodeon's animation showcase series Oh Yeah! Cartoons. Following the popularity of the shorts, Nickelodeon greenlit a full Fairly OddParents series, which aired for 161 episodes over 10 seasons between March 30, 2001 – July 26, 2017. The series also spawned several movies and specials, including three crossovers with Jimmy Neutron and three live-action movies, starring Drake Bell (The Amanda Show, Drake & Josh) and Daniella Monet (Victorious, Paradise Run). Fairly OddParents is currently Nickelodeon's second longest running television series, after SpongeBob SquarePants.

Jamie Lynn Spears and Paul Butcher Reunite Through a 'Zoey 101' TikTok Challenge

Believe it or not, it's been 15 entire years since the beloved Nickelodeon series Zoey 101 premiered on TV.


And since then, the cast has been pretty busy...but not too busy for TikTok, of course.

A few days ago, Jamie Lynn Spears and her daughter Maddie posted an at-home video of them dancing to a remixed version of "Follow Me" — aka the Zoey 101 theme song!


And if you look a little bit closer at the video, you can see Jamie Lynn rocking Zoey Brooks's signature key necklace.


Jamie Lynn also wore her PCA sweatshirt — which was the school (Pacific Coast Academy) Zoey went to!


And her former castmates were thrilled to see the video.


Chris Massey played Michael on Zoey 101.


Erin Sanders played Quinn.


And Paul Butcher played Zoey's little brother, Dustin.

The cast of Zoey 101 will soon be back on our screens again when they reunite in an upcoming episode of All That.

Funko Unveils SpongeBob, Batman and Hello Kitty Pride 2020 Pop! Figures

Funko has partnered with ViacomCBS Consumer Products, Warner Bros and Sanrio on a collection of new Pop figures in support of the It Gets Better Project and the work they do with the LGBTQ+ community. Indeed, SpongeBob SquarePants, Batman and Hello Kitty Pops have been given a rainbow makeover that looks absolutely fabulous.


In addition to the rainbow coloring, the images of the Pops seems to indicate that they will also be translucent (see the close-up of SpongeBob below), though Funko hasn't confirmed this. Needless to say, the effect would be stunning. The SpongeBob figure is inspired by the iconic 'rainbow' scene from the series.

Ricky Zoom to Launch on Milkshake! on Monday 20th April 2020

The animation also enters the music charts for April, as eOne releases three new songs to coincide with the terrestrial broadcast launch.


Entertainment One (eOne) is gearing up for the debut of Ricky Zoom on Channel 5’s multiplatform preschool brand, Milkshake!, which is set to air episodes from series 1 daily (Monday-Friday) from Monday 20th April 2020.

To crank up excitement around the show’s terrestrial launch in the UK, Milkshake! is supporting it with pre-promotional on-air exposure and social media support nearer the time of transmission.

eOne is backing its latest preschool property with an investment in PR and digital marketing activity to drive tune-in. Building on the company’s previous success with music releases for Peppa Pig and PJ Masks, eOne is readying the digital release of three Ricky Zoom songs that will include an extended version of the theme tune and two all-new original songs, which will be available on streaming platforms from mid-April. A nationwide influencer outreach campaign spanning parenting influencers, with a combined platform of 1.2m across the UK, will promote the positive brand values of fun and family to encourage co-viewing and kids to create their own outdoor bike-style adventures together.

“Adding to our existing strong roster of international broadcasters, we’re thrilled to be bringing Ricky Zoom to the No.1 weekday pre-school destination in the UK” said eOne’s Monica Candiani, EVP, Content Sales, Family & Brands. “The show is full of enjoyable all-bike adventures that will ignite young imaginations and we look forward to introducing the colourful world of Wheelford to future fans in the UK ahead of the consumer products roll-out later this year.”

The launch of Ricky Zoom on Channel 5 follows a strong debut for the show last autumn on Nick Jr. in the UK where it has been viewed by nearly 1.5m to date. The show will join Nick Jr.’s promotional slate in Easter with a seasonal episode special set to air for audiences during the school holidays. The growing broadcast exposure will drive awareness for Ricky Zoom as eOne builds up to the consumer products roll-out in autumn which will see additional toys released by master toy partner, Tomy.

Ricky Zoom follows the adventures of Ricky, a little red rescue bike, and his loyal Bike Buddies as they zoom around their Wheelford community helping others, trying out new stunts, and learning to stand on their own two wheels.

Meet the Bike Buddies along for the ride:

- Ricky Zoom – A little rescue bike that loves to go fast, Ricky is a loyal friend and natural leader of the Bike Buddies.

- Loop Hoopla – An adventurous dirt bike with a happy-go-lucky attitude, Loop loves having fun and trying crazy new stunts.

- Scootio Wizzbang – Scootio is bright, brainy and never afraid to speak her mind. She loves using her technical genius and gadgets to solve problems.

- DJ Rumbler – DJ has a huge heart and would do anything for his friends. He also has a super toolbox and a robotic arm, so there is nothing he cannot build—or knock down.

Developed by Emmy Award-winning creator Alexander Bar and production house Frog Box, Ricky Zoom highlights the importance of friendship, resourcefulness, community and teamwork. Celebrating differences is one of many zoomtastic themes within the series. The series has been renewed for season two.

The news comes as both Milkshake! and Nick Jr. are ramping up their content amid the school closures due to the coronavirus pandemic. Additionally highlights include Nick Jr. Too becoming Nick Jr. Peppa throughout April.
