Awards shows don’t come more fun than Nickelodeon’s Kids' Choice Awards with its stellar lineup of celebrities and musical acts. But what makes the awards show truly a magnet for viewers are the stunts that producers come up with each year using the show’s trademark green slime. The 30th Annual Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards was held on March 11th at the Galen Center on the University of Southern California campus in Los Angeles and Elation’s new IP65-rated Proteus Beam™ and Fuze Wash Z350™ got in on the slimy fun.

The Kids’ Choice Awards honors the year's biggest television, movie, and music acts as voted on by Nickelodeon viewers. Broadcast live on the Nickelodeon television network both in the U.S. and internationally, WWE superstar John Cena hosted this year’s show with the set, celebrities and the host himself unable to escape the prodigious amounts of green goo.

“We were always looking for a light that could take the slime,” says show lighting designer Tom Kenny, who often lights big shows for Nickelodeon and lit the Kids’ Choice Awards this year for the fourth time. “We always need to keep electricity away from the kids so we usually don’t put lights around the stage but with its IP65 design the Proteus gave us the opportunity to do that. It went really well and it was good to know that the contestants were safe.” The concept for this year's design involved kids taking over the set, the first time in the show's 30-year history that kids were a part of the set and scenery.

Some of the new elements of the stage at this year's Kids' Choice Awards included a tunnel of slime, slime fountains - including a section of the stage that rose 12 feet and shot slime - confetti, and orange smoke. Four Proteus Beam fixtures were used on the stage deck in the most difficult splash area. “The fixtures were used throughout the show and got slimed, wet and knocked around,” Kenny said. “They were fantastic and gave great beam action.” Because of its IP65 design, the Proteus Beam can be used in any environment and under any weather conditions. The award-winning discharge lamp source moving head houses a host of design features, like CMY color mixing, gobos and prisms, and it produces a bright and precise 2-degree beam.

Also used on the Kids’ Choice Awards stage was Elation’s Fuze Wash Z350, an LED wash light moving head with RGBW COB LED engine and a lens face that appears as one color. “We used them as a scenic element as well as for other treatments and they held up great,” Kenny stated. “The color and speed of the fixture is good and the non-pixelated face looked fantastic.”

Both the Proteus Beam and Fuze Wash Z350 fixtures were supplied for the show by VER. “Both I and the show love introducing new technology and these fixtures fit right into that quota,” the designer concludes.
