When the fun stops - As part of a special article about abandoned theme parks, the UK's Daily Mail published a photograph from the sign for "SpongeBob SquarePants The Ride" at the abandoned Six Flags New Orleans amusement park in New Orleans, Louisiana. Six Flags New Orleans closed its doors to the public just before Hurricane Katrina tragically struck in 2005 and is currently owned by the city of New Orleans. Despite various announced plans to reopen or reuse the site, as of June 2013 it is still an abandoned amusement park in a semi-ruined state. On August 18, 2009, it was announced that the land would be redeveloped into a Nickelodeon-branded theme/water park. Unfortunately, however, plans for Nickelodeon to turn the area into a Nick branded theme park fell through after bonds failed to come through. SpongeBob SquarePants The Ride used a SimEx-Iwerks Motion Simulator and was based in Cajun Country themed area of the theme park.
