Nickelodeon Brazil's "Julie And The Phantoms" Nominated For An Award In The First Ever International Emmy Kids Awards At Mipcom 2012

U.K. titles nab six Int'l Emmy noms

38 nominees from 15 countries to compete

CANNES -- The Intl. Emmy Awards unveiled 38 nominees from 15 countries on the opening day of Mipcom TV mart in Cannes.

Underscoring the breadth and dynamism of the U.K. production biz, British titles scored six nominations in five categories; Asian programs produced in Singapore, Japan, China and South Korea also proved popular among the jurors, nabbing eight noms.

Comedy contenders include two British shows, "Absolutely Fabulous" from the BBC and "Spy" from BSkyB, Brazil's "The Invisible Woman" from TV Globo, which also scored nods for "Planeta extremo" (Extreme Planet) in the non-scripted entertainment and "All My Life" in arts programming.

Australia's "The Slap" from ABC, Gaul's "Braquo" from Canal Plus and Argentina's "The Social Leader" from Pol-ka will compete in the drama category, alongside "ICAC Investigators 2011" from China's RTHK and "The Kitchen Musical" from Singapore's The Group Entertainment.

Celebrating its 40th anniversary, the Intl. Emmys will hand out its Special Founders nod to TV vets Alan Alda ("MASH") and Norman Lear ("All in the Family").

"Glee" co-creator and exec producer Ryan Murphy will receive the Founders kudo, while directorate nod will go to Kim In-Kyu, prexy of the Korean Broadcasting System and the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union.

"At the first Intl. Emmys in 1972, there were only two categories: fiction and non-fiction. Today, we have 20 categories presented over four awards ceremonies," said Bruce L. Paisner, prexy and CEO of the Intl. Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

At Cannes, the org also announced the 24 nominees for the first Intl. Emmy Kids Awards.

Kids' toon noms include "The Amazing World of Gumball" from Turner Broadcasting in the U.K. and "Digimon Xros Wars -- The Young Hunters Who Leapt" from Japan's Toei Animation, as well as newcomers like Gaul's TAT Prods. with "The Jungle Bunch."

Kids' series contenders include "Junior High School Diaries" from Japan's NHK and "Julie and the Phantoms" from Brazil's Mixer, which was picked up by Nickelodeon ["Julie and the Phantoms" is a Nickelodeon Brazil/Nickelodeon Brasil co-production with Mixer Producing].

"One of the great success stories of international television in the last few years has been the explosion of high-quality children's programming around the globe," said Paisner.

Intl. Emmy Awards winners will be announced at a New York gala on Nov. 19. The inaugural Intl. Emmy Kids Awards will take place on Feb. 8 in New York.
