Former Nickelodeon UK Presenter Ed Petrie To Star In The Lighthouse Centre For The Arts' 2011 Pantomime "Cinderella"

According to this Nickelodeon news article featuring an interview with the former Nickelodeon UK and Ireland presenter Ed Petrie on BHbeat.com, Ed Petrie will be starring as the "Cinderella" character 'Buttons' in the pantomime production of "Cinderella" at Poole, UK's Lighthouse Centre for the Arts, which opens on Friday 9th December 2011. Ed Petrie also discusses how starting off in stand-up comedy lead him into a successful career of presenting, and his ambitions of being the next Doctor Who:
INTERVIEW: CBBC presenter Ed Petrie on dreams of being Dr Who

By Emma Bottamley.

Actor, comedian and CBBC presenter Ed Petrie, renowned by children across the country, is to take the role of Buttons in Cinderella at Poole’s Lighthouse Centre for the Arts, which opens on Friday 9th December. Ed discusses how starting off in stand-up comedy lead him into a successful career of presenting, and his dreams of being the next Doctor Who.

BHbeat: Why did you decide to do Panto?

Doing children's TV I always assumed that I would end up doing panto. I'm looking forward to the challenge and I just hope I get a lot of cheers! I've never done it before – it takes a lot of stamina and hard work. I'm really looking forward to performing with Guy Siner [Allo Allo] and Sarah Thomas [Last of the Summer Wine]. I used to watch both of their shows, and Guy has been in panto before so I’m hoping he’ll show me the ropes.

You went to Goldsmiths University to study Drama, are you looking forward to being on stage again?

It will be a new challenge for me and one that I'm really looking forward to. Acting is what I started out doing so it will be going back to my roots, but I haven’t been in a proper theatre since I was about 20 years old.

You've worked as a presenter for the BBC, Nickelodeon and CBBC. How did you get into presenting?

Presenting was something I always dreamed of but I never thought it would happen to me. Originally I started off as a stand-up comedian and then I got an agent and went along to a casting audition for Nickelodeon. I never thought I would get the job! When I was a kid I used to pretend that I had my own TV show. I used to interview my mum and dad and pretend they were on my show. It’s quite weird now that I actually ending up doing it as a job!

What was it like being a stand-up comedian? Have you ever had any embarrassing moments?

My worst ever stand-up gig was when I did a show for a load of Royal Marines that had just got back from Iraq. It was the most terrifying thing I have ever done. I was supposed to do 20 minutes but I only lasted ten minutes. It was terrible, I had to get off the stage because they were shouting “taxi” at me. I just hope they don’t do that to me in panto this year.

What is the highlight moment of your career?

Getting my own Saturday morning TV show was really exciting and I did that for a couple of years. But I suppose the highlight moment was the very first time I presented for CBBC in the afternoon. Phillip Schofield used to do the job. I was so nervous before I went on air – it has to be the most exciting but nerve-racking moment of my life.

What are your plans after Panto?

I’m going to America to film a brand new series of a show I've been doing for CBBC called – ‘All Over The Place’. It’s basically about us travelling ‘all over the place’ trying to find weird and wonderful things. I've got three months to travel all around America, going to as many weird places as I can, for instance I’m going to see a man who has built a rollercoaster in his back garden! I’m also trying to write a children’s book, I can’t say too much about it yet but I’m half way through and I’m finding it quite difficult. I've never written a book before – it's probably going to be rubbish! I’m still doing stand-up comedy occasionally too. I think it's something that I will constantly enjoy doing. I always like showing off in some way.

Is there anything in your career that you would still like to do?

I have always wanted to be in ‘Doctor Who’, I know quite a few CBBC presenters who have appeared on the programme and I’m hoping that one day my chance might come. I’m such a fan – I've seen every single episode. If anyone should be on it, it should be me. I would make a brilliant Doctor Who.

Cinderella will run at Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts, from 9th December until 8th January 2012. For more information and tickets please see www.lighthousepoole.co.uk.

Aylesbury Vale, UK's Voice Of Nick Jr.'s "Peppa Pig" In The Running For A 2011 BAFTA Award

From Aylesbury Today:
Vale’s voice of Peppa Pig in running for BAFTA

A CHILD star from the Vale has been nominated for a BAFTA award for her voice-over role in Peppa Pig.

Harley Bird, nine, from Buckland Common, took over the role of the children’s show character three-and-a-half years ago after joining acting agency Alphabet Kidz.

And in recognition of the role, Harley has now been narrowed down to the top four nominees in the performers’ category of the children’s awards.

“It’s so exciting – we can’t wait,” said her mum Gill Riley.

“It’s fantastic news, although I don’t think Harley quite realises just how big it is.

“We’re going to the awards ceremony and Harley’s more excited about seeing JLS, who’ll be there, than anything else – but who can blame her?

“It’s very stiff competition. She’s up against some really, really good kids.

“I’m so very proud of her.

“There’s hundreds of kids nominated for these awards, and to be narrowed down to four in her category is amazing.

“Harley’s really very blasè about her role in the show – when she talks to people about it they’re just amazed by her.

“I don’t think she quite understands the enormity of it.”

Harley, who attends Pipers Corner School in great Kingshill, first joined Alphabet Kidz just over three-and-a-half years ago – and got the role in Peppa Pig after just a month.

Peppa Pig is a children’s television programme broadcasting on Channel 5 and Nick Jr. in the UK and Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. in the USA.

Each episode is approximately five minutes long and revolves around Peppa, a female pig, and her family and friends.

Harley will be competing against three others in her category at the awards on Sunday, including Daniel Roche from Just William, Martha Howe-Douglas from Horrible Histories and Ben Faulks from Mr Bloom’s Nursery.

Other big names in the running for the awards include The Sarah Jane Adventures for the drama category, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part One and Tangled for the feature films category.
Aylesbury Vale, UK's Voice Of Nick Jr.'s "Peppa Pig" In Running For BAFTA Award

And Harley is not alone in her successful childhood acting career – as her six-year-old sister Olivia is setting out on a venture of her own. Also represented by Alphabet Kidz, Olivia starred in her first TV role Thursday night in BBC3 sitcom Rev.

“It’s a big part. The episode’s more or less all about her,” added Gill.

The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on Sunday at the London Hilton on Park Lane. For a full list of nominees visit www.bafta.org

X-treme X-posure™ Offers The Power To Protect At Nickelodeon Land, Pleasure Beach, Blackpool, UK

From 24dash:
X-treme X-posure™ Offers The Power To Protect At Pleasure Beach, Blackpool

The ability to offer maximum protection within exposed, coastal environments has seen Sandtex Trade X-treme X-posure™ applied within a new, multi-million development at Pleasure Beach, Blackpool.

The premium masonry paint has been used at the park’s newest attraction, Nickelodeon Land.

Pleasure Beach, Blackpool has invested more than £10 million in this new six-acre development, introducing a mixture of brand new and extensively refurbished rides featuring Nickelodeon’s favourite characters.

Within the redeveloped site, Sandtex Trade X-treme X-posure™ has been used to completely overhaul the external appearance of a large building complex, formerly the Space Invader ride, which has been transformed into the new Big Pizza Kitchen.

The masonry paint was specified to give the highly textured, ’lunar-like’ rendered substrate the maximum protection against the elements - whilst providing long-term decorative benefits.

Liz Bowater, Sandtex Brand Manager, said: “This coastal area offers a challenging climate, particularly in the winter, and with Pleasure Beach,Blackpool right on the promenade, it is particularly exposed.

“Here substrates need protection from driving wind and rain and from the salty air and sea mists too and X-treme X-posure™ offers the best possible weather protection and the reassurance of long-lasting colour retention.”

Mike Brown from PleasureBeach, Blackpool, added: “Due to the extreme weather conditions at Pleasure Beach, we need to use paints that can withstand all that the elements can throw at us.

“We also need to ensure that all our buildings and rides look fantastic for our guests. Sandtex Trade and Crown Trade paints have always met our needs and we were delighted to be able to use the Sandtex Trade X-treme X-posure™ for such an important project as NickelodeonLand, as we know that we can rely on it to look great and keep its appearance.”

For the past six years, Rushworth Painting Contractors have been responsible for all decorative work at Pleasure Beach, Blackpool, specifying coatings Sandtex Trade and Crown Trade paints extensively across the 42-acre site.

Crown Paints contracts manager Jason Collinge, and specification consultant Nicholas Archer worked with them to draw up a detailed specification for the project and provided colour samples to match the paint shades specified by Nickelodeon. All paint supplies and a full tinting and mixing service were then provided by the Blackpool Crown Decorating Centre.

In total approximately 500 gallons of X-treme X-posure™ were used.

As well as protection against sea and salt spray, X-treme X-posure’s™ time-proven, trusted formula offers protection against acid rain, snow and frost, damaging UV rays, atmospheric pollutions and adverse weather conditions.

It includes anti-carbonation properties to protect concrete, a hydrophobic formulation that provides a highly water-resistance finish to wash dirt away - and added algaecides and fungicides to resist unsightly algae and mould growth.

A moisture vapour permeable coating also allows walls to breathe and a highly flexible coating keeps hairline cracks covered.

Three short and informative videos are now located at Sandtex Trade’s YouTube channel www.youtube.com/sandtextrade highlighting the product’s outstanding performance qualities.

Broadcast Interviews David Lynn, Managing Director Of Viacom International Media Networks UK And Ireland, Australia And New Zealand

From Broadcast:
The Broadcast Interview

David Lynn, Viacom

A workplace retooled for collaboration, key brand investment and a continued push on global formats will position Viacom’s UK channels for the future, its UK MD tells Alex Farber.

The front of the MTV offices just off Camden High Street look so much like a building site that for a split second it seems as if the broadcaster is no longer open for business. In fact, there is a hive of activity taking place behind the temporary plasterboard exterior facade, with the building work a physical manifestation of the evolution under way at the UK HQ of the global organisation.

The relaxed and affable managing director David Lynn greets me, apologising for the noise, and rushes me into the boardroom, past the giant SpongeBob SquarePants model that dominates his own glass-walled office.

Like a proud expectant father, the first thing Lynn shows me is a computer simulation of what the finished project, due next summer, will look like. “It’s only when you knock it all down and see the space that’s left that you realise how huge the project is,” he says. “Although the price tag did give us a hint that this was going to be big.”

The offices are being redesigned to make way for the broadcaster’s Comedy Central and Nickelodeon staff, who are moving up from their individual Soho offices. The extra room to house 650 staff comes at the expense of the in-house production studios.

The move is designed to stoke collaboration across the business, following a rebrand at the start of this year to Viacom International Media Networks [VIMN] from MTV Networks [MTVN], to reflect the growing importance of all the channels. Significantly, the channels will remain separate editorially to maintain “strong unique brand identities”.

It also cements the position of the UK as MTV’s hub of international commissioning and is backed with a 50% year-on-year commissioning hike in UK orders – though Lynn refuses to reveal how much spend will be ploughed into homegrown shows.

And any content investments in MTV or Comedy Central for the UK are primed to reach a bigger audience than has previously been possible following the leap of both channels up the Sky EPG in February.

MTV’s viewing figures have grown by 50% as a direct result, while the less dramatic shift for Comedy Central has nevertheless resulted in gains of around 24%.

The move follows a steady evolution of MTV into an entertainment channel, albeit one that retains its musical roots.

“We felt that where we were on the EPG, it was hard for viewers to discover the content – particularly the entertainment content; it really needs to sit in a very visible part of the EPG,” says Lynn. “Big investments are made more possible by the ability of the audience to discover content in a more prominent position.”

The success of reality series Geordie Shore – MTV’s highest-ever rated UK show, with an average audience of 600,000 – was as a direct result of the EPG jump, Lynn believes.

And securing Friends for Comedy Central has also been a coup, boosting audiences by 43% and providing a platform for shows such as Threesome, the channel’s first scripted comedy.

Lynn’s strategy now is to bolster spend on the shows that he sees as the heart of the channels. “We’ve had a fantastic year and our ambition is to grow on that,” he says. “We plan to continue to invest across the three brands into next year.”

But rather than just see domestic gains, Lynn has his eyes fixed firmly on making use of the global distribution network at his disposal, presiding over content that he can air internationally. In turn, this will enable increased spend. “The UK is well positioned as a location to invest in more international content,” he says.

House of Anubis, a live action Nickelodeon show, produced by Lime Pictures for both the US and UK markets, is raised as a prime example of this approach. And the UK base also houses MTV’s international vice-president of content and programming David Booth, who is on the lookout for formats with international potential.

Equally, MTV will continue to borrow from the US to try to ensure formats it launches succeed, as with Geordie Shore’s inheritance from long-running reality show Jersey Shore.

While audiences are proving to be relatively robust, the advertising market is less stable. Forecasts are down for the short term, with a question mark against investment from brands next year, but Lynn says anecdotally media buyers are more positive. Overall, he has a “cautious but balanced” outlook for 2012.

One way in which the turbulence in the advertising market is being addressed is to ensure the business is diversifying its revenue streams. Consumer products, mainly licensing and merchandise, has long been a vital part of Nickelodeon’s bottom line and will continue to be exploited.

Live events are an important area of growth for MTV and earlier this summer the broadcaster hosted a series of club nights in Ibiza that acted both as marketing tools and profit generators.

The week following our interview, we meet again at the MTV EMA awards, held in Belfast and viewed in 640 million homes in 159 countries. The volume of viewers, and strength of support from guests including Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber, underlines the power the brand continues to wield 30 years after its launch.

And the MTV OD service, which offers access to long-form content via a day or weekly subscription, has “performed well” since its launch earlier this year, Lynn says. But there are no short-term plans to extend it to the other channels. He considers it to be a “complementary” rather than “cannibalising” service to its linear TV business.

“It’s good for us to have a direct contact with the consumer. It doesn’t in anyway replace core business, which is to supply linear channels to pay-TV operators like Sky or Virgin,” he says. “It’s about offering consumers cheap, legal availability of content online.”

Similarly, Lynn refuses to be drawn on the broadcaster’s strategy for connected TV, including YouView, demurring that no decisions have yet been made. Two-screen interaction is an area Lynn is more comfortable discussing and an engagement format that fits with its 16- to 34-year-old audience. Along with the EPG leap, Lynn points to the strong social media campaign supporting Geordie Shore as a big factor in its success.

Lynn has laid the foundations, positioning the business solidly for the future, but in an increasingly congested market it will be vital for the MTV family of channels to continue to attract and invest in breakout shows if it is to compete on an equal footing with its terrestrial-funded entertainment rivals.

David Lynn on…
3D
I think it’s great for music, so it is something we want to be in. In the same way with live music in HD you really get a sense of being there, 3D brings viewers one step closer, so we definitely want to pursue it.

Channel launches
Blink launched in Poland with Endemol [featuring shows such as Hot In Cleveland]. Our aim is to expand into other markets but the UK is not part of that. We look at brands we have in the portfolio. The UK market is very well catered for, but gaps will still emerge over time. As a big international content owner, we will look to exploit those with our own content or with partners.

Ofcom guidance
We focus a lot on being compliant and listen very closely to Ofcom. The recent changes have just been about clarifying what the rules are. So to that extent we have good guidance, we’re happy to work within the framework as a responsible broadcaster.

MTV records 250,000 VoD views

MTV has had 250,000 paid-for views of its content since it launched its direct–to-consumer VoD service [Video On Demand] in February [2011].

The micropayment platform, which charges £2 per day or £3 per week for unlimited access to shows including Teen Mom, Jersey Shore and 16 And Pregnant, has been used by 40,000 consumers.

Viacom International Media Networks managing director David Lynn said the service had “performed well” but was “additive” to its main linear TV business rather than considered as a potential replacement.

“It’s good for us to have direct contact with the consumer as we can learn more about them,” said Lynn.

He added that Viacom was considering introducing similar video players for Comedy Central and Nickelodeon, although it is not in his short-term plans.

“We need to take stock and learn from what we’ve seen this year. Going direct-to-consumer is new for us and we’re learning about pricing and distribution before launching any other services.”

Lynn stressed that keeping strong relationships with its linear pay-TV providers, Sky and Virgin Media, remained its priority.

Spring Fair Unveils New Licensing Lounge For 2012

From Licensing.biz:
Spring Fair unveils new Licensing Lounge for 2012

Nickelodeon, Turner CN Enterprises and BBC Worldwide among those sponsoring area in hall three.

Spring Fair organiser Emap Connect has revealed plans for a dedicated Licensing Lounge at next year's show.

Situated in Hall 3, the lounge is being sponsored by five licensing agencies and brand owners including Nickelodeon [Nickelodeon Consumer Products], Turner CN Enterprises and BBC Worldwide.

In addition, trade body LIMA UK will have a dedicated table in the lounge with a team of experts on hand to answer questions on licensing and merchandising.

Sponsors will be able to use the space to display product and hold meetings with potential and existing licensees, as well as retailers interested in stocking the merchandise.

Max Publishing - organiser of The Licensing Awards, of which Spring Fair is the headline sponsor - will also be sponsoring a drinks reception in the lounge on the Monday evening of the show.

"We're delighted to be a key partner for the Licensing Lounge at Spring Fair 2012," said Nickelodeon's Mark Kingston. "It's a fantastic opportunity to be involved in the largest retail trade event in Europe. We look forward to meeting with retailers and key licensee partners to work on plans to drive our properties and respective businesses forward in 2012 and beyond."

Spring Fair 2012 takes place from February 5th to 9th at Birmingham's NEC. For further details, click here.
Also, from Toy News:
Toys on the move at Spring Fair 2012

Sector is rebranded as Toys, Games & Kids Gifts as it moves into hall three.

The renamed zone is set to bring over 50 new companies to the show in 2012 as it expands into a larger space in hall three.

Event director, Greg Saint commented: "The introduction of Kids’ Gifts has brought increased interest in Spring Fair from a broader range of suppliers than ever before, especially those looking to showcase their products to gift retailers as well as the traditional toy shops.

"The cross-over buying potential offered by this part of the show will be tremendous come February."

Over 200 firms are already signed up to exhibit in Toys, Games & Kids’ Gifts and some of the companies joining in 2012 include Hornby Hobbies, Revell, Ravensburger, Manhattan Toy, Top Model by Depesche UK, Bigjigs Toys, Cheatwell Games, Cuckoo, Diamond Comic Distributors, Great Gizmos, Grossman, Margarette Steiff, Mumbo Jumbo Toys, Rainbow Designs, The Green Board Game Co, Thumbs Up, Ty UK, Wild Republic and Zap.

The area will once again play host to the Toy Demonstration Area, which was launched at last year's show and further developed at Autumn Fair.

Peter Jenkinson of toy website Toyology will once again host the demonstrations. He commented: "The toy demo area proved a great success in its first year and I'm very excited to have been asked back to host the area again to build on this fantastic start.

"The success of the first Toy Demo area within Spring Fair 2011 was measurable from the feedback of the companies who showcased their products there, this time around I'll be trying to create an even busier hive of activity.

"I'm excited to have been asked back to have some more fun hosting the Toy Demo area, the aim is to ensure this spot is alive with activity from start to finish so both exhibitors and visitors get the absolute maximum from the show."

The changes at Spring Fair International for 2012 will also include the launch of The Party Show, dedicated solely to party and dress-up products, which were previously co-located with toys.

The segmentation of party into an event of its own within Spring Fair has enabled show organiser Emap Connect to refine its focus on Toys, Games & Kids’ Gifts, which has grown significantly since the last event in February 2011.

Saint continued: "The growth in both areas demonstrates that the re-edit was definitely the right move for both The Party Show and Toys, Games & Kids’ Gifts and I’m delighted that the expansion area we created for the section has been utilised by both existing and new companies alike."

Companies who have products that may not be eligible for a full demonstration are welcome to get involved in the Toy Demo area so that retailers can interact with as broad a selection as possible in between sessions. (For information of how to get involved contact Greg Saint: greg.saint@emap.com).

Hall 5 will also host the new Licensing Lounge, sponsored by some of the biggest names in the licensing industry, including: BBC Worldwide, Nickelodeon, Turner Broadcasting and Warner Brothers, fully endorsed by industry body LIMA.
